TfW withdrawals (Now just 150/158s to go)

The reason is because they're still not cleared yet. 4 car max between Shrewsbury & Manchester via Crewe because of issues with ASDO

There's 101 different reasons none of us are party to as to why they might have sent a 150 over a seemingly available 197, but like I said - it's not the kind of thing that can happen by accident, or a decision made lightly any more.
I dont believe there is enough capacity with the 197s at the moment to even run 4 cars on the Manchesters. A few have been 4 cars but there are still a lot of 2 cars.

Until they stop covering on services they are not really meant to be on I dont believe we will see many 4 cars.

Yes there will be reasons why a 150 went to Manchester but its very rare now compared to a year ago, even six months ago when a lot were 150s.

230006 is having extensive mods done to resolve the issues, if that’s successful they will all get the mods done.
Let's hope these mods work.

I like the idea of recycling the tube trains, but the new trains need to work.

There are a lot of services would benefit from the 197s getting released.

I see it as, they’re a great idea in theory and would be perfectly suited for the Bidstons.

But they really do have to work. I studied and worked in an electrical/ manufacturing engineering field before joining the railway. Some of the pictures I have seen are seriously questionable so hope that it does resolve the issues!

Meanwhile, the 175s were running on the Oldham Loop?

(Not fully sure what the direct equivalent of Maesteg/Ebbw Vale would be, but I am sure the 175s were not being used on those)

I miss the 142s, maybe a 4-car 142 could be used next time there are not enough 197s for Manchester.
I think they were mostly broken. Though they probably turned out on the Crewe shuttle which is a reasonable equivalent. Meanwhile the coast got 37s, 101, 142, 153, 156 or 158.

Sorry, I was being sarcastic.

Unlike the 175s, which were mostly broken, the 197s are turning out on local journeys at the exact same time the 150 went to Manchester. My point was that there was no equivalent use of 175s at the same time as the 142s were sent along the North Wales coast.

About 19 years ago when 158s were common on South Wales to Manchesters before the 175s properly took over I remember there were comments and complaints one morning when a 150 turned up in place of the booked 158! 150s have never been suitable for long distance services!
I had a 150 on the 2145 Cardiff to Crewe in 1999 or 2000. There were only six of them at Canton at the time. I wasn't bothered. It got to Crewe on time.

I must say there is a lot of anger about 150s on this thread. For the last year of class 317s there were daily substitutions for class 720 or 745s but it was barely mentioned on this forum. A 150 is essentially a diesel version of a series two 317.

Whilst appreciating that there have been other occasions where older stock has substituted for the new, there are some key facts here:

1. TfW/Welsh Government/Whoever chose to use Chester for the CAF (197) fleet over a new depot (as had been done with the 80x on GWR, for example)
2. TfW did not maintain the 175 fleet well enough (see judgement from ORR below) and therefore we went into a period of 150s covering 175s due to unreliability (fires).
3. TfW introduced the 197s and allocate them on local routes around Cardiff which would previously have been 150s.

The Office of Road and Rail has published details of the improvement notice this week on its website, the notice was served to TfW on March 17.

The notice states: “Transport for Wales Limited as the Train Operator has failed to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that passengers and employees are not exposed to the risk of harm.”

“Furthermore, the operator has failed to implement effective arrangements for the organisation, control, and monitoring of the maintenance of the Class 175 fleet, necessary to ensure the safe operation of the transport system.”
Source: https://www.deeside.com/rail-watchd...es-over-passenger-risk-following-train-fires/

The example you gave is also slightly different because 317s were the outgoing fleet, but in this case the outgoing fleet is 175. The 150s are only a substitute and were never booked regular work on the Manchesters.

If the whole thing had been a managed transition from 175s to 197s, with the occasional need to substitute something else in, then I think it would have been less annoying. However, there has been a long time on the Marches with downgrades in stock.

There is also the Mk4 debacle in the mix too, but at least the Mk4s seem to be sufficient in number to run reasonably reliably now.

Well said "Craigy". Loads of reasons that only fleet and maintenance controllers know - from daily fuel mileages, through planned exams and exam locations to traction knowledge maintenance etc etc

From a personal perspective I would expect a 150 to be more logical on an internal south Wales service than a long distance trip to Manchester and back, but there is probably consideration needed for getting 150s up and down the Marches for exam swaps etc. Presumably 150s are mainly examed at Canton, so a 150 on a Bidston would need to be swapped out at some point in the cycle to / from Canton.

There are scheduled moves for cycling the Bidstons though, and we are talking here about a 150 working a Milford Haven to Manchester and back to Cardiff. Hence that is not related to swapping 150s around.

At some point planning was not great if ALL of the 197s running on shorter trips near Cardiff were unvailable

I think Mr Bagels point is getting missed a little bit.

The 150’s are now restricted to the valley lines to keep them on short trips so they do not accumulate mileage too quickly.
This is because once a 150 reaches the mileage for its next major exam (C 6 exam possibly ?) they are being withdrawn. So every 150 has a limited lifespan from here on dictated by number of miles travelled.
This is all To try and keep them that little longer and avoid further fleet shortages before more of the new stock comes into service.

Added to that they are ‘banned’ from the mainline to Manchester and need special approval to be allowed to go there. To get that special approval it will have to be a last resort to keep that service from being cancelled. They will have considered units on maintenance, other services where units could be swapped and probably other things I can’t think of.

Thank you both

To be fair we had the same arguments when 150s were used on long distance trips whilst 175s were on the likes of Crewe - Chester shuttles, and people didn't believe that there were good reasons for it happening then either - no matter how often it was pointed out to them

At least it'll be moot soon enough when only 197s or 67s will be able to be used on the long distance services!

We’re very nearly there and the total end of the old stock is very rapidly approaching! 158’s may be gone by this time next year or just a few months away from leaving.

Very much not my area of expertese, but Romic Group have put an advert on their site for class 150s availiable for sale. Not sure who they are or whatever but it looks like they sell rail vehicles worldwide.

Link to the advert here .
If the rumours in the industry a couple of weeks are true, a Nigerian operator are interested in DMU's.

Exactly. They are only booked for Valley Lines and a few other services close to Cardiff like Ebbw Vale and banned from the Marches as you say. So are we not allowed to comment with surprise when one ends up doing an all day diagram Cardiff-Milford-Manchester-Cardiff when we were told they were banned without special permission.

There were at least 2 of the 3 car 197s on Maestegs which all start at Canton so I dont see why they couldnt have used one for the Manchester diagram and used the 150 on a more suitable diagram. As the 150 started at Cardiff as well. Needing maintenance or fuel wouldnt have come into it since the 150 would get both in Cardiff and if the 197 needed maintenance all the more reason to send it close to Chester.

Its not so much we dont believe you, its more we find it very very surprising given there is no need for 150s to go North now as they dont have any booked workings and there were 197s that were working short journeys in the South.

I dont see why you are bothered by people commenting that 150s shouldnt be used on the Marches. Its been said many times they are effectively banned now. So its not surprising people will comment when one turns up when it really shouldnt do.

None of the 197s that made it to Maesteg that day spent the previous night on Canton. As such, they weren't available there at 0300 when the unit for the Manchester diagram needed prepping for it's first move of the day ECS to Swansea.

I agree.
I'm not bothered by those comments - in an ideal world 150s really shouldn't be used on the Marches. I'm bothered by people implying that there was some degree of laziness or incompetence in sending them over a more suitable unit.

Maybe it is just that we see "sign-offs" ourselves in our own lives where people make a good case and there is no time to verify alternatives. Therefore it is entirely plausible someone made a case for the 150 to go to Manchester and it was duly signed off, even though another possibility could have been equally viable.

If the "ban" were an actual ban then I suspect minds could have been focused to either find another unit at 3am, or prep something by the time that train came back from Swansea. Certainly it should have been possible to make a substitution somewhere along the line.

It is right that we are all outside the industry and therefore do not know the precise details. I think it is fair to think that there should be enough 197s capable of running to Manchester for 150s not to need to go at all.

Thats fair enough, And im not saying there was any incompetence just found it quite odd a 150 was allocated, as even when a 150 ends up running to West Wales its almost always swapped at Cardiff but this wasnt possible.

Thank you for your reply and for explaining the 197s wouldnt have been available.

I agree and I do appreciate people in the industry taking time to post and explain things.

On paper there should be enough 197s to run their diagrams and 158s have been the first choice to sub for 197s in recent months but it seems the 158's are short themselves and things seem really stretched again.

The trains are in awful condition and have already been deemed as not up for sale by Porterbrook and are headed straight to the scrap yard following their pulling from service

150236 and 281 are already being stripped for parts at Landore.
The reported condition of the TfW 150/2s is quite a shame given that Northern are still running a large number of class 150/1s with their inferior passenger spec (no end gangways). Even if the budget won't stretch to a fleet expansion at Northern, it would have been preferable if the TfW 150/2s had been in a condition where they could have replaced some/most of Northern's 150/1s.

Is the insane amount of hassle worth swapping one 40 year old DMU for another?

It's a moot point anyway, assuming the condition of the TfW 150s is as bad as has been reported. However, if the TfW 150s were in a comparable condition to Northern's 150/1s then the suggestion is swapping one old DMU for one that is nearly identical from a maintenance point of view (and probably not far off from a crew familiarity point of view either) but a fair bit better from a passenger's perspective (and quite possibly that of guards and maybe a refreshment trolley) thanks to the end gangways. That really shouldn't be much hassle at all; the fact that in reality it probably would be alot of hassle just shows how broken the railway has become.

No problem. And yes, normally they would swap out at Cardiff, it's a thankfully rare event for them to have to keep going!

Absolutely there should be enough - and it's very unfortunate that the 158 fleet have had their own issues at the worst possible time!

Assuming they return to service, can anyone advise where 150242 and 150279 stand in terms of available remaining mileage before withdrawal?

Assuming repairs are completed to one or both units, will these purely be for the accident damage or will the necessary overhaul be completed too, such that they are the final two to be withdrawn?

There are two different works overhauls. C6 are for bodywork and happens every seven to 10 years. When the 150s reach the deadline, it is game over. C4 overhauls are for bogies and other equipment below the floor. These are mileage based, though I don't know what the mileage interval is. Having spent a year doing up to 900 miles a day instead of 400 miles per day, that mileage has been eaten up faster than planned. Judging by the shiny bogies on some units, these exams are still being done on units with years on the C6 counter. However, there is no point doing a C4 on a unit that is due a C6 in three months so I imagine the restriction is to try and preserve the miles and keep them in service longer.

The Maestegs are not at Cardiff at the same time as the Manchesters. Browsing RTT on the day in question reveals the 1402 to Ebbw Vale was a 150 so that is no help. The 1402 arrival from Ebbw Vale shunted and attached to the 1549 to Manchester.

Better kept isn't exactly appreciating the difference of time in service between the 195s and 197s. Depots will likely get better with time and experience, as an IT worker I fully appreciate knowing a new system Vs a (broadly) understood one.

150s seems to have been a financial choice howeber
