TfW withdrawals (Now just 150/158s to go)

And if there's any truth in the 175s to GWR rumour, then GWR won't be interested in the 150s either.
The 175 move seems rather more than s a rumour now with things seemingly progressing in that thread.

The 150s from TfW aren't available for re-lease due to the costs required to keep them going so even if anyone was interested, they've effectively none to be interested in.

The trains are in awful condition and have already been deemed as not up for sale by Porterbrook and are headed straight to the scrap yard following their pulling from service

150236 and 281 are already being stripped for parts at Landore.
My sources tell me that although some will be going for scrap after reclamation of spares (4 units max) the rest will eventually be "sold abroad". Watch this space!

Have heard from someone that’s been involved in the 197 project and it’s been said the 158’s have to go by December 2025.

I also heard from someone senior at TFW that best guess is September 2025 for the 197’s on the Cambrian but could be earlier if CAF can deliver the units sooner.
That is the way I understand it too.
So if the ERTMS 197s are in service by September 2025 that is a maximum of 14 months from now. That time will simply fly by.

Thew bit I struggle with is ERTMS / ETCS 197s can operate under conventional signalling - ie Sutton Bridge Jn - Birmingham International, so why store brand new trains at Long Marston (which I believe is happening) when they could be out working the Marches whilst the 150s are gradually reduced to South Wales use then disposed of. When do the leases expire on the TfW 150s ?

Very much not my area of expertese, but Romic Group have put an advert on their site for class 150s availiable for sale. Not sure who they are or whatever but it looks like they sell rail vehicles worldwide.

Link to the advert here .

The ERTMS 197s will work in a different way under conventional signals to the 158s. I'm not sure of the exact details, but it might explain the delays.

When 003 was used for training runs on non fitted lines it had ERTMS isolated, but that's not how things will be done regularly.

They are also offering class 317s. Would take a lot of welding to unscrap those.

A 150 has broken free onto the Marches this afternoon with 150262 working 1W60 Milford Haven - Manchester Piccadilly throughout followed by 1V58 17:30 Manchester - Cardiff.

Oh no, especially not on the rush hour from Manchester! Potentially able to swap something in from Crewe and find a way to get it South? Or keep it around Shrewsbury. Either way, not good!

Yet no doubt there are 197s on short hops around South Wales...

Every time it looks like there might be hope on the horizon, something goes wrong. At least recent substitutions were 158s.

Is this where people on that 17:30 are supposed to be happy that the 150s did not go for scrap yet?

Romic are the company who have been export agents for HSTs going to Mexico and Nigeria, and previously the 87s to Eastern Europe.

Just pretend it is 20 years ago and you would never have known, unless you happened to be on it. I remember when the 175s were new. First North Western were sending 142s from Crewe or Manchester to Holyhead to cover the gaps.

I saw it at Shrewsbury on the 1730. Looked rather cosy!

Very short of 158’s 9 not serviceable and 5 short of the needed amount have meant considerable short forming on the Cambrian and Birmingham services.
And it’s that 6 weeks of the year where even a 4 car isn’t enough.
12 o’clock from Mach today was virtually full leaving, with a good number to be picked up at every stop, a very cozy 4 car!
Even worse the 9:30 from Shrewsbury to Mach was only 2 cars and had people standing leaving Shrewsbury with even bigger crowds at each stop, how they all got on I’ll never know!

Anyway, back to topic, it’s a shame that the 150’s can’t hang on another few months, perhaps a number of them could have been used to go to Birmingham to add extra capacity !

Meanwhile, the 175s were running on the Oldham Loop?

(Not fully sure what the direct equivalent of Maesteg/Ebbw Vale would be, but I am sure the 175s were not being used on those)

I miss the 142s, maybe a 4-car 142 could be used next time there are not enough 197s for Manchester.

Ouch. Traditionally six weeks summer was the crucial time down the Cambrian and North Wales coast and every single DMU car possible was mobilised to carry passengers. Down the Cambrian in the late 1970s we even go those two hybrid 3 cars - GRCW+BRCW+Cravens, as well as some non corridor Tyseley suburbans.

Should the question be asked why over a quarter of the 158 fleet are stopped ?

There were a lot of single 158s around yesterday. I used the 1538 Holyhead to Birmingham International, which was somewhat cosy and very hot with the usual failed air conditioning.

Yeah, obviously the Cambrian is very limited stock wise now!
When the 197’s take over it’ll be just as limiting, hopefully all of the units will get the ETCS kit at some point then the possibility of running 5 or 6 car sets to Machynlleth in the summer would be more viable and very needed.

As Craigybagel said, those who need to definitely do and are actively working on resolving it.

Did 150262 run all the way from Milford to Manchester yesterday? According to RTT it did but I ask as its very surprising that this happened when there were 2 x 3 car 197s on Maesteg to STJ services. I had standard plus all to myself on my journey back from Maesteg yesterday to get 197125 which was good for me but not so good for Manchester passengers crammed into a 150.

Edit - actually just seen the posts above mine about the 150 on the marches! No idea why these posts didnt show up until after I posted! lol

I had a 3 car 197 on Maesteg yesterday (i rode it to get 197125, only need 197117 now) and had standard plus all to myself! There was also another 3 car 197 on the other Maesteg service i saw whilst waiting for 197125.

About 19 years ago when 158s were common on South Wales to Manchesters before the 175s properly took over I remember there were comments and complaints one morning when a 150 turned up in place of the booked 158! 150s have never been suitable for long distance services!

No doubt it was something to do with mileages and exams, but it really does look like TfW could have swapped the 150 with a 197.

Indeed, given that Manchester is supposed to be 3+2 then it should be possible to have a 3 on all Manchester now all the 3's are in service.

Either way, this is a 150 thread now the 170 and 175 are gone.

150s can only go to Manchester now with the authority of high up people. Rest assured it won't have gone if there was any other option available.

There's still 5 x 3 cars to enter service, but yes I agree most Manchester - South Wales should be 3 cars by now.

I get lost with how many are still to enter service.

The 2's from the 3+2 should be around as well, meaning there should be 2+2 or 3 on all Manchesters. However, I know some are covering Bidston and others are covering for slow introductions of other classes in South Wales.

More units due to enter service, more units due to be released from covering for 230s and 231s, and also 2+3 isn't cleared for Shrewsbury - Manchester yet. There's still a way to go with the whole project yet, and that's why capacity still isn't what it's meant to be. It's a lot better than it was however.

Hopefully, the 231s will not be too far away now.

The 230s is a bit of a different issue, it is not clear how Bidston will resolve itself.

But, given that 3+2 to Manchester is not possible, the units that theoretically provide the Manchester service are split into a 2 and a 3. So in theory for every 2 2+3's that were planned to run, there is now 2 x 3s and 2 x 2s. That means "in theory" that from what should be 2 diagrams, 3 can be covered and the other 3 and other 2 are spare (not introduced yet in the case of the 3s).

I think the reason Manchester cant be 3 & 2 is because there are 197s required for Maesteg and Ebbw Vale. Originally the plan was for Swanline and Pembroke to remain pairs of 153s until the 197s could move from Ebbw Vale/Maesteg but it looks like they have gone ahead with 197s on those routes at the expense of Manchester being 5 cars. Plus waiting for the final 5 of the 3 car 197s of course.

Im not sure what the issue is with all 3 Bidston diagrams being 230s. Im not really up to speed with whats happening up there.

I also find it hard to believe the 150 couldnt have been on an Ebbw Vale or Maesteg even Swanline diagram rather than go to Manchester given that the Manchester diagrams appeared to start at Cardiff that morning. To be fair I think a 150 has only been to Manchester twice in the last few months however.

The reason is because they're still not cleared yet. 4 car max between Shrewsbury & Manchester via Crewe because of issues with ASDO

There's 101 different reasons none of us are party to as to why they might have sent a 150 over a seemingly available 197, but like I said - it's not the kind of thing that can happen by accident, or a decision made lightly any more.
