It was not! Nobody in that part of the world raised any objection whateoever, and the National Park is supporting anything which wiill enhance public transport. Also used to justify the cancelling of the Windermere electrification, because of the scarring of the Lake District landscape (conveniently forgetting that the existing electrified WCML seems to blend in quite nicely now, albeit admittedly with a less obtrusive system).
It doesn't. Trolley wire on simplified supports has been mentioned.Though the question could be raised as to why a low-speed, single track branch needs more intrusive OHLE than a 100mph main line, other than “that’s how we do it now, stupid boy!”.
Nobody says it does or that there would be any problem - except the politicians or their spin doctors who withdrew funding and wanted to divert the blame onto some other (innocent) scapegoat. The Windermere branch doesn't really go through exceptional landscape, anyway. It's pleasant enough but I can't see that installing OHLE would be a major aesthetic crisis.
