Shots allegedly fired at Trump at a rally in the U.S. Dragged off the stage by his security.

If this turns out to be the case I'm utterly appalled that the U.S election has taken this turn. I don't care what you think about a person's politics but this is unbelievable. I fear for the U.S if this is what it's come to.

The feed I'm watching suggests he might have been hit on the ear, but nothing confrimed.

I was worried something like this might happen to either candidate - it will just conflagarate things more.

Is it too soon to wonder if him and many of his supporters will now take gun control more seriously if it turns out he was shot by one?

I counted three shots before Trump went down, two afterwards. One report mentioned snipers (plural) on a nearby roof.

The assassination attempt and deaths of rally attendees has almost certainly won Trump the presidency.

This, alongside Biden's unwillingness to step down leaves a very steep hill to climb for the Democrats.
I suspect Trump won't let them all go to the wall, as he will want an external enemy to distract from domestic problems, not least all the freedom removals under that project agenda. If I had to take a punt Taiwan is the one he'd be least likely to allow to be lost, given his anti-China rhetoric is well known and their chip sector is vital to the US and world economies, but he is of course very unpredictable.

However one thing you missed is the Israel-Gaza situation, where I can see him allowing Israel to go all out in this conflict, to the point all the pro-Palestine protesters might wish it was still "Genocide Joe" running things. The risk here though is if Israel does this, an all out Middle East Conflict would be more likely, as Iran amongst others would not stand for this, which would send oil prices through the roof and make US (and global) inflation even worse.
Yeah, Taiwan maybe he'll do more for, but he is very very unpredictable, so we simply have no idea.

Agree, but from what I'm reading, so far it's one rally attendee (plus the shooter) who are confirmed dead. RIP.

However the media is suggesting at least one other person was (badly?) injured, so a developing situation.

A terrible day for the USA (and the world, given the US' importance) and not one for political pointscoring. Biden has withdrawn his TV ads (presumably for Sunday).

Trump’s defiance as he was being taken away to hospital will win him the election. He is perceived to be strong and Biden weak.

Well someone should tell the Republicans that, one of them has even claimed Biden ordered the hit!

Personally i think the likelihood of this being a false flag is reasonably high.

This.

The election's already over, and NATO needs to start preparing now for the US withdrawing support from Ukraine.

An alternative view is that a Trump presidency, as a result, will be typified by authoritarianism in the name of national security, and that many basic freedoms (such as freedom of to criticise the government) will be cracked down upon as any criticism of Trump online might, in the eyes of the government, label the person making the criticism as a potential terrorist.

If I was an American I would be fearing a Trump presidency even more than I did last week, and voting Democrat even more enthusiastically as a result, out of sheer fear.

Strange assessment. I see no evidence of the Republicans wanting to violate the constitution like this. That risk seems to be far more from the Democrat side.

Not strange at all. Leader who believes his life is under threat will want to crack down on any activity that could increase that threat.

If I was a USA citizen I'd be voting for Trump, even though he's bombastic.

Biden has Parkinson's or similar, and as for the communist Kamala Harris...

Unfortunately the lunatics are now running around social media claiming this was an attempted Biden "hit", and that Trump is "badass" for fist-pumping after getting hit. And sadly it will only reinforce the belief amongst the window licking far right of 'Merica that he is some sort of saviour sent down by a deity to lead their country to greatness. This will certainly help his ratings, and will make him possibly the world's most dangerous man if he wins in November.

Of course it's nothing to do with their insane gun laws that allow nutters to buy ridiculously overpowered weapons then use them against people....

You're going to have to explain that one.
She's left of Trump, and everyone knows that anyone left of Trump is a communist...

Indeed. Gun ownership needs to be clamped down on and severely regulated, maybe this will make the right realise this.

Is this grounded in reality of just pure speculation? The reality is that it was Trump himself who was silenced last time by some big tech firms who disagree with him.

It won't, it will make them more determined to have all nutters running around with guns.

What exactly did he do in his first term of office that makes you feel he could be the ‘worlds most dangerous man’?

Very unlikely; Trump's solution to school shootings was to arm all teachers!

The assassination attempt and deaths of rally attendees has almost certainly won Trump the presidency.

Yes indeed, as per other posts he now looks an all-American hero, bloodied but unbowed, especially when compared to Biden.

This was a terrible and very wrong action, and questions will be asked about how the shooter managed to carry out his act.

Just speculation, based on my interpretation of his character from previous behaviour, combined with the fact that someone tried to kill him. And the big tech firms (we're talking about the pre-Musk Twitter, I presume) had absolute right to boot him off for violating their T&Cs. How would it have looked if Average Tom was booted off for making similar posts, but Trump not because of who he is?

It seems quite evident that he is an unstable and irrational person, and this assassination attempt will only increase this behaviour.

This could have the domestic effects discussed above, but arguably could also have much more serious effects on a global scale.

Selling Ukraine down the river for starters, and empowering Putin.

I don't know, maybe cozying up to other dangerous dictators, and following his term stating he'd throw allies to Russia if they didn't do want he wanted?

I wish it would concentrate a few minds r/e guns, but it won't. It's strange how they allow supporters to stand/sit behind the candidate, they are totally unprotected from wayward shots.

I'm not so sure. If this had happened like 2 weeks before the election then yes, it would have won him the presidency. But the election is 4 months away: That seems like ample time for the poll boost Trump will receive from this to die down, and also will give time for the Democrats (if they are savvy and organised enough, which I admit is doubtful) to turn the debate back to the gun laws that will have enabling the shooting.

A replacement Democratic candidate (such as a well regarded Governor) may be able to beat Trump, because there'd be the appeal to voters of a 'fresh face'.

It's unlikely Biden or Harris could.

They have already by taking charge of arms deliveries to Ukraine from the USA for that very reason.

Can someone explain why Trump is so opposed to assisting Ukraine? I've never understood his opposition.

Hard to say for certain but the main possibilities - which all fit with Trump's character and stated views are:

  1. He likes Putin because of his tendency to respect authoritarian dictators
  2. He doesn't like Ukraine because they didn't cooperate with his attempt to smear Biden's son.
  3. He generally feels that America has been involved too much with protecting other countries and wants to take a more isolationist approach.
