If some people think Biden ordered it then they really are dumb, do you not think Biden would have employed someone competent!

Imagine if Biden had come out with a comment along the same lines, mobster Biden!
Maybe Biden called for Vice President Trump to be taken out ;)

He would not have got official access to the event while carrying a rifle, surely? Not even in America!
He wasn't actually inside was he? He was on top of a nearby building where he was shot dead, pictures of the rifle where it was dropped have been widely shown on all news channels.

The actions today and the response that comes is very worrying. The response from Trump will be very important. If he is not calm this could easily get out of control. I have seen videos of his redneck ss ranting about civil war and responding in kind.

America is on the edge of chaos.

Had the assassination actually succeeded we could well have been looking at chaos anyway; at best widespread and very deadly rioting nationwide, at worst civil war. America is going through its version of the USSR at the end of the Cold War and when capitalism falls (which is as extreme and unsustainable as communism), it won't be pretty.

I do actually think that whenever Trump dies the US is going to have a right job on its hands trying to contain the effects, even if that death is from natural causes (there will be a strong core of his support who would be indoctrinated into believing it was a CIA plot or something).

I'm not a US citizen, but I wouldn't vote for Trump.

My husband, who is a US citizen, won't be voting for Trump. In North Carolina, because this is where we both lived last. I try and console him that his vote is "worth more" than in California, where he grew up, because there it's a given that Democrats will win. However I don't see North Carolina as being a close call this time.

Trump is a nasty, unpleasant, divisive and obnoxious person. I'm ashamed to say that I'm slightly disappointed that whoever took a shot at him yesterday missed.

I can not work out how, in a country of >100 million people, neither party can find someone more appropriate to stand for the job of President. Biden is a disappointment, Trump is terrible, and Harris is non-existent to me - why was she chosen 4 years ago if she wasn't going to end up standing now?

I think Trump will win, which will be good for just about nobody except Trump, but the Democrats have a lot of blame in this too.
And I‘m very happy you are slightly disappointed. Disgusting wanting someone dead.

Associated Press reported rallygoers had flagged down a local police officer driving past when they saw the rifleman climbing up to the roof - the policeman followed him up, was confronted with rifle pointed at him, backed off and that's when the rifleman shot Trump. Info courtesy of local TV station captured on YouTube.

Despite Bidens weak showing at some events recently he gave a good account of himself over this incident which shows him to be level headed and the voice of reason. Trump trying to exploit the situation will incite the MAGA crowd but they are onboard already but could well deter the undecideds about what hes really like as a person.

As much as I utterly detest the man and everything he stands for (as I've repeatedly made clear on here), I don't want him shot dead for partaking in the political discourse.

Four US Presidents (Lincoln, McKinley, Garfield & Kennedy) have been assassiated and there have been several serious attempts/plots against several presidents staring with Andrew Jackson in January 1835 (just as a indicator of how far back into the American history books you have to go to find the earilest instance of this). Am not holding out much hope for a measured, level-headed, official statement from Trump. Will be watching the next few days with no small amount of trepidation.

I suspect there has been a failure/communication breakdown somewhere between the secret service and the local police and this guy has slipped through a gap.

I did think Trump's comment that God had ensured he survived (or words to that effect) was in pretty poor taste, given that somebody else got killed. Does he really believe he's God's chosen one?

Not in the slightest, but he knows that his core supporters do and this is the ultimate vote winning scenario for him.

That's just a thing people say to rationalise sheer luck. Sadly the bullets which missed him went into an innocent person and killed them.

That is a little unfair. Many people would utter words like that in a similar situation.

Ironically, Trump survived the shot because he was too far to the right.

He was shot in his right ear. He was too far to the right from the point of view of the would-be assassin.

Another irony was that as the bullet struck a supporter was holding a sign saying 'FIRE BIDEN' just behind him.

I have just seen that Donald Trump has completely rewritten his acceptance speech at the RNC.
If it's less inflammatory than before, all to the good, but I suspect it's relative i.e. he won't have the Rev Ian Paisley damascene conversion.

In fairness, imho, a Pauline conversion on the road to Damascus is needed for both left and right.

Me too. Like when the local Police saw him with a rifle, supposedly 5 mins before - surely the first thing you would do is to radio command.

JD Vance is his running mate, which is no surprise given he was the favourite in recent days/weeks. He's also an example of someone who was once critic now super-loyal follower of Trump:

Trump announces JD Vance as VP pick

Donald Trump has announced on his Truth Social platform, external that he has chosen Ohio Senator JD Vance as his vice-presidential nominee.

"After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator JD Vance of the Great State of Ohio," Trump wrote.

Trump and Farage are alike in many ways, not least they both row with many subordinates big time who become implacable enemies. Sometimes it works the other way round, but neither man will forget the previous history of the relationship, let alone forgive.
