I think it was meant to be Gameboy (as in handheld games console, albeit a rather old one!).
When I passed my test, I was a nervous driver and was very aware of the fact that having to learn how to drive properly, as you can only do once you've passed and drive on your own - and on all roads - I was probably holding up and annoying others.
That fear probably made me drive worse too, but you DO get better and now I don't have to take my eyes off the road to do anything like change gear, indicate, operate the wipers or whatever.
Clutch control, hill starts and everything all comes naturally. It's auto pilot, leaving me to concentrate on what matters (and, to be honest, that isn't looking at the speedo constantly, as some people seem to think guarantees you'll be safe and invincible).
I can accept that, at first, being in the right gear at the right time can take getting used to, especially if you change car as you'll probably think everything is different, but if you're still doing that after a few months (or let's say, a certain number of miles) then maybe the examiner was wrong to pass you. An auto makes driving easier, for sure, and is great in and around town (or a semi-automatic, where you get the best of both worlds) but nobody should drive an auto because they're too scared to drive a manual.
I studied roadcraft and drove loads to get practice, on different roads, different conditions (I actually looked forward to fog and snow!) and at night etc. But that's because I like driving. I guess people can't afford to do that now, given how expensive petrol has become.
Since I passed in 1991 I have not been involved in a single accident. I discount when a lady ran into the back of me at lights as she was looking in the rear-view mirror doing make-up (honestly!) and noticed at the very last second. I discount it because I could see she wasn't slowing down and moved forward to give her more room, thus minimising the damage (in fact, there was no damage bar some scratched paint) - proving you need to be alert ALL the time, and use those mirrors!
Zoe obviously doesn't drive, and perhaps by the time she does, every car will drive by itself as has been suggested in other threads!
