Ref TfW are these ‘dirt cheap’ fares on routes shared with other operators or eg the Cambrian? If the former then they are most likely intended to grow TfW/WG’s revenue at the expense of DfT/UK Treasury. If the latter then maybe there is more genuine yield management to grow revenue at quieter times and redistribute loads.
Advance should probably be renamed ‘train specific’ if these tickets can be purchased on the day, but the current mechanics allow the operator to withdraw or limit availability should they wish to.
