There was a Hove to Bournemouth service for a number of years at the turn of the century. There is only so much that can be done with a two track railway. Even with the cheapest middle distance fares in the country, the demand in the grand scheme of things is fairly limited for spending nearly three hours on one train to get from Brighton to Poole.

The Coastway West timetable is an example of trying to offer the best timetable within the constraints.
The absolutely jammed A27, M27 and A31 suggests the demand is not fairly limited I would suggest.
The London Victoria to Bournemouth via Hove service was all about the rail industry trying to play is own game and not about what was really wanted by passengers especially in reliability terms I would further suggest.

what time of the day was this?
I see mentioned 1553 to Brighton but it isn't obvious what trains were delayed by the shunts to form this train running on time?
I reckon the poster who mentioned the 1533 was guessing based on a scan of Realtime Trains.

My own guess is that @LCRTrainfan979 was there around noon and saw the 1216 ex-Brighton terminating early at 1159 (it skipped the Littlehampton reversal, looks like there was a points failure) which did indeed delay the following 1203 to Southampton and 1208 to Portsmouth. If so, this example is not a timetable problem, it's a specific infrastructure problem today.

It was the 12:03 Southampton train which was delayed, and the one which was delayed in being dispatched to the turnback siding with a Brighton to Chichester train immediately beforehand, because a driver went to have a cup of tea, despite the result of this being a train held at a red signal because platform 2 was filled by a terminating train. While i wasnt aware of the reversal being cancelled, i do think if the train had been dispatched earlier, that could have mitigated the delays to those 2 trains. I do wonder whether they would make any amendments if issues with running via Littlehampton do arise, and whether they would need to maybe cut the service back to terminate at Littlehampton, and try and have another service west of Littlehampton. What service doesnt matter, but as long as they have a westbound link, people may just about put up with it.
Although demand wouldnt justify this, i have thought that having the Brighton to Chichester service instead terminating at Bognor Regis (by default) may be a better idea from an operational point of view, given there are plenty of terminating platforms at Bognor, rather than a pretty awkward turnback siding at Chichester. Maybe if there are major issues with reliability, that could be an interim solution, pending another rework. Obviously all of this is hypothetical, and depends on whether Southern can get their act together, and maybe co ordinate services better, to prevent easily avoidable delays.

I'd imagine that the problem is that demand doesn't necessitate it, it is just a matter of passenger convenience, although it might be noted that there is still 4tph from Bognor to Barnham.

Is it possible for any of these to be extended to Littlehampton? Might it even be possible for such a Littlehampton-Bognor to have a cross-platform interchange at Barnham with one of the main West Coastway services, thus speeding up Littlehampton-west and east-Bognor connections massively?

They'd be better off binning the Barnham shuttles and running an hourly Littlehampton to Bognor on the opposite half hour to the Brighton to Chichester

Travelling west from Littlehampton is not as easy as it was. One of the published routes is via Angmering with a 4 minute change ... on the opposite platform.
eg 1700 Littlehampton - Angmering 1709, then 1713 departure going to Southampton.
I wouldn't risk that connection.

It's also not as easy to figure out options for linking up the different bits of service along the W Coastway since they stopped producing the integrated W Coastway timetable years ago. There used to be one consolidated timetable showing all the comings and goings off of the branches onto the east-west line. Now, you have to use at least 2 timetables and try to mentally integrate them.

Or a journey planner, like most people will.

But that's for working out a specific journey - which is a different job. A timetable allows you to understand patterns and interconnections and options for when things go wrong, so if you're up and down that line regularly you know what to expect in terms of the service patterns, without needing to ask for lots of individual specific journeys. When I was around there a lot, years ago, I didn't know when I might want to pop along the line a few stops; but having the overall pattern to hand in a timetable I could adjust my plans a bit to fit in with the best options for the schedules (especially the many interconnections). A written timetable simply does a different job than a journey planner does.

While i have thought that, the problem lies with the line east if Barnham probably being at capacity, at 8tph, with 6 from Chichester and 2 from Bognor. The Barnham shuttles are very specifically routed into platform 1 at Barnham so they dont need to connect to the mainline.

The real reason in my opinion why it wasnt possible to get more trains west out of Littlehampton was southerns inability to u-turn on their doubling of Brighton to Southampton services, which essentially was going to replace the Brighton to Portsmouth service. Then people complained about the exclusion of the lack of Brighton to Portsmouth services, and a Brighton to Chichester service had to bypass Littlehampton so it could continue.

Overall, the real problem at this point lies with line capacity, and its not possible to fit more trains west of Littlehampton when the main line is full up as it is. Immediately east of Ford, theres the same number of trains, but it was previously 2 to Littlehampton and 6 on the bypass chord, compared to now 7 on the bypass chord and just 1 on the branch to Littlehampton.

Overall, westbound connections from Littlehampton dont work, because Angmering is simply too far from Littlehampton, and the double back needed takes significantly longer than doubling back at Barnham to travel west from Bognor for instance. Either the solution would be an infill junction station, maybe at Arundel Junction, or large scale line upgrade works to fit in more trains, and both of those options would cost an outrageous amount of money and planning, so they wont happen. In short, Littlehampton gets little luck with westbound trains it seems for the forseeable future.

Fortunately Littlehampton has the 500 bus service now every 30 mins Mon- Sat and hourly on Sundays it leaves from opposite LA station to outside Barnham station in 15ish mins. It goes on to Chi in about 50 mins serving St Richards Hospital en route to the city centre. Fare at £2 eachway comfortably undercutting the now dysfunctional rail service. Just another example of distant Thameslink management out of touch with the south coast.

Would swapping the 2ph Bognor to Barnham shuttle for a 1tph Bognor to Littlehampton shuttle be a happy compromise?

Would reduce the number of trains Bognor has to Barnham where most people want to change for services towards Chichester or Angmering, but might provide a useful link to Littlehampton and give Littlehampton and extra train to Barnham.

It doesn’t sound like it would solve anything, removing 1tph from Bognor and giving it to Littlehampton would then move the problem over there. Also Bognor Regis gets more passengers so in theory more people would be worse off

Well that is a very good point, and maybe why Southern thought that removing a westbound service would be an acceptable outcome. There is also the 700 bus which ss me tioned, already covers Bognor, which the 500 doesnt serve.

The only slight negative is that until around October last year, there used to be 3 700 buses per hour to Bognor, then onto Chichester, which got cut to 2 and the fact this hasnt been reinstated I would say is a negative, particularly when the direct train service gets removed, and replaced with an undesirable connecting service at Barnham, which might put some people off taking the train over the bus.

What is the passenger flow that justifies 4tph from Bognor to Barnham (and not 2tph) in the first place?

It appears to indicate that there is sufficient demand for the lease cost of one unit to be paid for running a Bognor to Barnham shuttle.

The 500 is a relatively recent (post Covid) innovation.

Littlehampton-Chichester is now 2 bph on the 500 via Barnham in 50 minutes and 2bph on the 700 via Bognor in 65 minutes.

The shuttle provides much better connections for Bognor passengers into and out of trains to/from Portsmouth and Southampton. It also provides resilience for when the London service falls apart.

the solution would be an infill junction station, maybe at Arundel Junction
In the middle of a flood plain with no road access, the Dovey Junction of Sussex.

Under that hypothetical scenario in which such an option did get selected, they would need to improve transport links, such as adding roads towards it. In all honesty, with Kingley Gate, you would have some passengers that might use the station for purposes other than just changing there. While some tracks may need to be rearranged, it could be a useful idea inn the long term, as that it could hypothetically displace Barnham as the main junction station. Unlike Dovey Junction, it would be the kind of station which would offer more connections regionally, and new connections, such as easier connections between the Arun Valley line and the London service to Littlehampton, which currently share track on Arundel Junction, but do not connect.

Ultimately, its a good point however with flood plain, and I acknowledge it would cost a ridiculous amount of money, and I even I acknowledge it won't ever happen. Its a purely hypethetical concept.

Its a fair point, given that (at least during off-peak periods) that many trains are pretty empty, and filling up 2 or 3 trains could be a more economical option. However, if you cut services, all that does is make the service less attractive, and more trains allow more connections to be made at Barnham. For example, changing for a train at Barnham from a Bognor shuttle today onto the Southampton to Brighton service only took around 10 minutes (due to a small delay, leading to the fast Arun Valley service to come in first after the Bognor Shuttle (which wouldn't have happened if it hadn't been delayed). On Sunday when there are only 2 tph on the Bognor branch would take around 20 minutes, which in turn would prompt me to just get the bus to Chichester with a direct service. Ironically, often when I travel west from Bognor, due to having to change at Barnham, I often take the bus to Chichester and go from there instead of using Bognor, simply because its a better service. More cuts would put me off from using Bognor station.

On the topic of Bognor, its a pity it now takes longer to get to London Victoria for two reasons. One reason is that all trains now call at Amberley and Christs Hospital, so thats a small increase on the direct service. However, the main reason is the inability to access the fast service (which has been nicknamed by my family as the "Horsham Express"), which was possible when both the Littlehampton service and the Barnham shuttle were only a few minutes apart from the preceding London service. In turn, that meant you could use one of those services to save around 7 minutes of travel time, given that the train attaches at Horsham, this meant you arrived at the same time. The new spacing means this is no longer possible

In main line capacity terms, since the Bognor-Barnham shuttle can use a separate platform at Barnham, there would be no need to cut back on that shuttle in order to add Bognor-Littlehampton services too. The paucity of west-connected services from Littlehampton is a real pain now. Extra services into Littlehampton from the west would also help with journeys between Littlehampton and the Horsham line (since Horsham trains all head west at the junction these days, with no routine direct services to Littlehampton from Horsham, so you need to double back from the west).

Unfortunately, that doesnt take into account that there isnt practical line capacity for even 1 assitional train on the section between Barnham and Ford. Heavy retinings would be needed to fit in even 1 more train out of Littlehampton, given the line straight after the branch meets the main line is already busy, with 1 train out of Littlehampton, 3 trains from Brighton and 4 from the Arun Valley.

My apologies for mis-guessing. I would hazard a guess that the driver was reckoning on their normal 5 minutes to change ends and didn't realise/wasn't advised they needed to shunt immediately.

Indeed. Now thinking about it further, i suppose thats a reasonable point, and you could probably blame it on the signalling team around Chichester for not advising that driver, as they could have and should have done

Unless the signallings been changed at Chi it's not possible for a train to reverse in the platforms from the East. The train has to shunt in to the reception siding change ends and then come back in to the London platform. It used to be possible to reverse from the West in platform 2 the last time I was on a train that did that it was a football special from Fratton in slam door days.

It's still possible, it happens when there is engineering works between Chichester and Barnham.

Indeed, i experienced that myself a while ago. It did manage to cause some confusion when the doors opened on the right, rather than the left. It isnt a regular service however, because if it was, they probably would reinstate the midhurst bay platform next to platform 2, the one thats now heavily overgrown, which in turn would prevent platform 2 from being blocked.

I have always thought though Chichester is one of those stations that smaller than would be ideal. It would have been useful if it was one of those stations which had a side platform and a [full length] island platform, because that way, you could have the terminating trains use one track, while keeping out of the way of the through services, similar sort of layout with Barnham (for Bognor shuttles), and Worthing and Hove (not really used much at present after stopping services were withdrawn or extended). Its a purely hypothetical scenario, because it would inevitably require land acquisition, but would have been useful had such a station been built by some old railway company in the first place.

The Midhurst trains actually used the up bay behind the now platform 1. The down bay was mostly used by the all stations train to Portsmouth and was electrified. Both survived until relatively recently I left from the Midhurst Bay once on a DEMU on a special to Lavant just before the Goods service was withdrawn and the line closed.

Fair enough, the bay on platform 2 was the one I meant. Fortunately, that one hasnt been sold off, so i would say that is pretty good futureproofing of it was to ever be needed again.

I see that, today, alternate fast Arun Valley trains are serving Southampton! Just like before the timetable change. I presume that this is related to Brighton Pride, and somehow releasing units for strengthening.

This is due to the Brighton-Southampton/Portsmouth services only running as far as Chichester, so to maintain a Southampton connection one of the Vic’s runs through

Shockingly, I can find no mention of the planned short terminations anywhere on the Southern website.

Techinically speaking, it was the trains from Brighton which would usually terminate at Southampton which got diverted to Bognor Regis. The service that would have otherwise served Portsmouth & Southsea go reworked into a second Brighton to Chichester service (as had been proposed during the consultation phase of the timetable change). Therefore to compensate, a London service that would have otherwise terminated at Portsmouth Harbour was diverted to Southampton.
I suspect the main reason is so they could run longer trains, which would have been potentially difficult in Portsmouth and Southampton where they sometimes have to share platforms with other services, hence making it a little more tricky to run longer trains. Thats probably to be fair though a result of a fragmented system where co ordination with SWR may have been too complex for them to bother working out.
