Seems to me that all of the main Glasgow Railway Stations are out. Every single one of them.

Bit of conflicting info at stations, with trains operating differently to announcements. Perhaps its just an earlier recording that hasn't been switched off yet. It does look like an improving situation though.

8.40 Glasgow to Euston 'formed of less coaches than usual'.
So does that mean it's locomotive & coaches?

Okay, things are now getting back to normal. The winds have pretty much gone, and most services are running as planned today. The following diversions are still in place:
  • Argyle Line services are otherwise subject to disruption, but likely to be back on track by this evening.
  • Dalmuir-Springburn services are withdrawn
  • Services are not calling at stations between Dalmuir and Hyndland via Yoker, with no replacement bus. That said, there are very good bus services on this corridor anyway.
  • Larkhall branch services are starting and terminating at Hamilton Central, with no replacement bus
  • Wemyss Bay services are still off, with a variety of replacement buses connecting onto Gourock services (which are back on)

Seemingly, other services are back up and running, and it's good to see that things have gotten back to normal pretty quickly on most routes. The low bandwidth page is no longer in place on Scotrail's website.

Does anyone know why the Ayrshire services were still operating last night when everything else went off (except E.Kilbride), surely being electrified and in an exposed coastal location you would expect them to be the first to come off!?
Not complaining mind you, I was only 50mins late getting home compared to the horror stories elsewhere, just curious.

because, oddly, wind speeds weren't as high in the west of the country

Still seems a bit strange that the diesel Paisley Canals (less than a mile from the Ayrshire services) was off and the electrified Ayrs not.

East Kilbride HAS to run, all the stops get pulled out for it. Anything will be cancelled to run it, needing a unit? Cancel the canal. Needing a driver? Cancel the whifflet! Needing a guard, cancel the Barrhead! Etc etc etc.

Some serious traction problems from this 334 this evening. A bit of autumnal treatment might be on the cards!

Don't tell me a top Scotrail manager actually lives in East Kilbride and, no it can't be true, really travels by TRAIN!!

Buses back to where? Someone here may be able to help out... got to be easier than relying on variable staff info and mobile internet!

Glad to hear that the staff have been helpful and plentiful though; a significant improvement on the snow scenario.

Sorry for not replying sooner...I was erm 'borrowing' wifi from a nearby East Coast train last night on my iPod...my phone won't let me post for some reason.

Staff largely vanished when near total cancellation was annouced with no help from staff for other travel. Edinburgh bus station was still shut when we got there heading for Perth...luckily we picked up a CityLink bus and got back late on.

I got some pictures of the chaos but on a VT home atm enjoying FC :) so I'll post more later. On an aside 1M59 1600 GLC - BHM booked Voyager but running Penolino so plenty space :)
Currently 25 down after leaving Glasgow 10 down (it turned round in just 10 minutes!)... Think we may have been put out behind a 185 judging by what I saw and heard

It doesn't have to run, as we found a few weeks ago
Passengers were travelling on the Barrhead / Kilmarnock services and then on to a bus at Pollokshaws
The only reason it kept running was because it was not affected and is used to operating 6 coach Class 156 units

Not sure why the Barrhead / Kilmarnock service was suspended, as a Stranraer - Glasgow (via Kilmarnock) service managed to sneek through and was almost on time!

You've forgotten the one that always gets cancelled... Motherwell-Cumbernauld! First to go in just about every scenario! (Mostly because it ferries about 1 passenger on each journey).

To be fair, though, the EK services are amongst the busiest to operate into and out of Central. If there's a candidate for 15 minute frequency, this has to be it IMHO. On the other hand, the Whifflet and Paisley Canal runs (for example) are much quieter, and indeed these two largely shadow an alternative route.

Blimey, 1 passenger can be a good day!
It used to be a case the Glasgow - Whifflet was first to suffer, but if there is a shortage of units the Motherwell - Cumbernauld is now the one to suffer
As I posted previously the unit operating this yesterday was held at Cumbernauld and operated to Glasgow QS instead
It then appears it went onto yet another diagram, but ended up stuck in Stirling

The EK service would most definitely be more frequent by now, but there are infrastructure issues which restrict this, so increased capacity is the only solution available

I don't see what the Whifflet and Paisley Canal service alternative routes are
If you are simply suggesting they are parallel to existing routes, then you could apply that to loads of other routes, and the combinations are nearly endless (Glasgow - Pollokshaws / Shawlands, Glasgow - Pollokshields, Glasgow - Clarkston / Williamwood, Glasgow QS - Anniesland / Anniesland, etc)

Indeed, I was astonished services were actually suspended on that occasion,it must have been really bad! Perhaps 'HAS' to run is a little OTT, but it isn't far from the truth. Infrastructure issues include the fact that the line was built as single from Busby to EK, and is incidently tokenless block on that portion also. For a 15 minute frequency, I wonder whether another passing loop on this section would make it a possibility?

On a similar note, the last train to EK (2318) is the only 'last' service out of Glasgow Central that runs back from it's destination as a passenger train, all the others run empty. There is a story that this is because, some years ago, several high ranking managers used to attend at a masonic lodge in the village at EK. Finding that they always had to leave early, it was decided to make the terminating train run passenger back thus enabling more drinking time! To your actual point, there are quite a few managers on the EK line, whether they have any sway however is debatable , I think the punters on that line are vociferous enough to protect their service!:)

More disruption, until 8am anyway..

No trains between Partick and Springburn / Airdrie until approximately 08:00
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/sa3a7a2e9b7d4c69b40d9b803ee93c6c/details.html

Overrunning engineering works are causing disruption in the High Street area.

Because of this, there are no trains between Partick and Springburn / Airdrie. These delays are expected to last until approximately 08:00.

Passengers travelling to central Glasgow from stations west of Partick should travel to Glasgow Central.

Replacement bus services will not be available. Passengers should speak to station staff or use Help Points for further information.

To find out whether this will impact your journey and to get alternative options planned for you, please use the National Rail Enquiries real time Journey Planner, or call TrainTracker on 0871 200 49 50.

The Scotrail site has cleared up; the only travel information concerns engineering work.

For Whifflet, you've got Cambuslang (for Carmyle), Shettleston (for Mt Vernon), Garrowhill (for Baillieston), Blairhill (for Kirkwood) and Sunnyside (for Whifflet itself). Similarly, for Paisley Canal, you can go to Maxwell Park (for Dumbreck), Cardonald (for Mosspark), either Hillington station (for Crookston), and Gilmour Street (for Paisley Canal itself). These aren't ideal, but they are feasible alternatives if things go wrong. There's also excellent bus links along both routes.

By comparison, EK has plenty of buses to Glasgow, and there are rail alternatives as far out as Giffnock (eg Williamwood), but for Clarkston and beyond there are no feasible alternatives that don't involve driving. As such, Scotrail would be stranding a lot of passengers if

In fact, I'm surprised that EK puts up with the service it does, after reading about its "special status" on here. People I know frequently comment that the trains are often cancelled and turned back at Busby at any sign of disruption (obviously due to that being the single-track section). I think it's necessary to double the line all the way to EK at the time of electrification to provide an increased service frequency, and a more robust timetable for passengers. A quick look on Google Maps suggests that it's not impossible, although it may be quite difficult between Hairmyres and EK. Even then, if you only left that bit singled, and had a two-platform station at EK, it would probably work OK.

I'm glad they don't just axe the Whifflets willy-nilly now. They are getting busier throughout the day, and it's definitely a growing route for Scotrail. I must admit I do prefer that route for travelling into Glasgow over the North Clyde Line (I actually live in a position where both Kirkwood and Blairhill as easy to get to as each other).

The electrification proposes to replace all the signalling between Muirhouse (just after Pollokshields) and East Kilbride
The junction at Busby Junction will also be remodelled prior to electrification with work scheduled for 2013 (one year prior to electrification work commencing)
The signalling between Pollokshaws and Barrhead will also be improved (which is currently one single block section in each direction)
However, as you have rightly noted the section between Busby and East Kilbride cannot be returned to dual track, this has been a long term issue
A small enhancement was trialled in the 1980s where peak time services ran to Busby and then turned round

I would argue that is a slight exaggeration, turning at Busby is usually due to late running of ten minutes or more, and really isn't that common. The line generally runs extremely well all day every day. But cancellations are of course more prominent to passengers, than the countless times the service runs to a T!

Aye, found it strange as all we had was a speed warning board getting blown over and then skelped by 1S74 lol, that was the last train through for the day. Which stranraer service you meaning? :)
