47270, I believe. I was there too :D I'm not sure where it was headed for at such a pace, but I do believe that it lives at Carnforth, so might have been heading back there.

Are you looking for help to identify the loco, or help because you have admitted to yourself that you are a class 47 enthusiast and wish to remedy this appalling affliction ASAP?

There's nothing wrong with a good old fashioned 47 4SKRT :)

I mean, I was more there for The Don but I'll take anything that comes along when I got spotting

Back in the 1980s duff bashers were reviled. Admitting to liking 47s was like standing up and admitting to being a chicken molester; simply not done. In these more liberal times some people seem to be comfortable coming out of the closet on this one, but few locos arouse such annoyance and disappointment among enthusiasts of a certain age than duffs.

Personally I hate them for ruining so many trips in my youth. All the way to Edinburgh for the Dundee 27s and then a duff on the front? How do you think that feels? Even though it was a steam heat duff it made no difference. If I ever see a 47 again it will be too soon, and the cutter's torch is too good for them.

Duffs R.I.P. (rust in pieces)!

Sir, in this multiple unit-infested reality the sight of a 'proper' locomotive is a treat, to me anyway.
And i've only been going out on trips for a few months now so i can't share that sentiment of trip-ruination. Would you seriously prefer a Voyager to a 47? (But I think I know the answer already)

PS thanks for the info everybody. Shame about the weather, and shame about the badly-timed XC 170 in the evening...!

It was a bit peculiar seeing a 47 with a headcode box out on the main line, given that the vast majority of the main line examples have them plated over.

What’s all this about the weather? It was gloriously sunny for the short period of time that I was at Tamworth for the outbound working. The only problem was that it clouded over just at the critical point when “DoNZ” passed by, when I’d already set up the shot.

Got a few pics of the tour on its’ way back as well, as rather conveniently it passed by the top of the road I live on, so I just had to pop out of the flat for twenty minutes after work for that!

Will “Silver Link” ever settle down and just assume one identity for a reasonable period of time? <D

Severe hatred there. I have to agree though, 47s are so bad, they have outlived virtually everything else. I mean, something has to be terrible if its still out and about in respectable numbers at such an age. What were BR and Brush doing, building such a good machine. They have a lot to answer for. Good locos just arent allowed. Its against the rules.
Plus, how dare they put a decent loco on the front of a train in Scotland. In fact, anywhere. They have to realise you should only put inferior locos on the front of trains.

Dear Mr BR.
How dare you build such a good loco. This is not allowed. What school did you go to? Did they not teach you that good locos are bad?
Please make sure you never ever put a good loco on the front of a train in Scotland again.

yours,
4SRKT

Dear Mr NR,
How dare you let decent locos run over our metals still? I have no wish to hear of such locos running past Tamworth, so please make sure this never happens again. Have you not yet learnt that you should only ever let inferior locos run over our metals?
They may be slower, and probably break down every 2mins, delaying all the other trains, but this doesnt matter, because its an inferior loco. Remember, these are the best.

yours,
4SRKT

I am stuck though 4SRKT. They are such terribly good locos, and you want rid of them, but you dont want them scrapped. Apparently the scrappers torch is too good for them. So what then? Perhaps just line up a load of 47s in your back garden??
