Stockport-Denton line closed

Caught the Stockport-Stalybridge 09:22 "Parliamentary" service today.

Departed platform 3A pretty much on time, with 3/4 passengers at Stockport and another getting on at Reddish South.

I was expecting something a bit furtive but departure fully displayed, just as all the other services, on station matrix boards.

However, unless mistaken, REDDISH SOUTH, DENTON, GUIDE BRIDGE, and STALYBRIDGE doesn't appear as destinations which are accessible by a direct service on the big printed departures list which is displayed in the underpass at Stockport station.

In the past (when the service was on Saturday) I've seen them there.

My son-in-law (number 3) has been following this thread and he wants to ask you what was the longest direct timetabled passenger train service ever to use this line from Stockport to Stalybridge as part of a more complete route and when such a service might have ceased.

I thought of you as one to ask, if you know.

I imagine it's a case of which is the longest excursion train to go that way as most services on that line were shuttle services to connect 'South Manchester' to the Transpennine Express routes at Stalybridge.

I did post this a while back (although its Stalybridge to Stockport so doesn't fit your criteria </pedant> )

My 1973 timetable has a late-night SX York to Aberystwyth service via Stalybridge and Stockport:

York: 21:50
Leeds City: 22:43
Huddersfield: 23:26
Stalybridge: 23:56 (divides) to Manchester Victoria: 00:25 and
Stockport: 00:18
Crewe: 02:25
Shrewsbury: 04:15
Welshpool: 04:46
Newtown: 05:23
Caersws: 05:33
Machynlleth: 06:04
Borth: 06:29
Aberystwyth: 06:54 ​

By 1982 it seems to have been cut back to Shrewsbury and "MX" rather than "SX" but without going and digging all of my old timetables out of the loft I can't be sure of the exact dates.

Last time I looked it was listed however IIRC it was only listed for one station with something along the lines "as Denton but 4 minutes earlier" sort of thing

This is not an unusual occurrence on many station boards. It saves them a lot of space, if there are many stations shortened information posted.
