What is the chief difference between these two groups of prehistoric, extinct marine reptiles: plesiosaur; and pliosaur?

Thank you... sticking with the mention of Loch Ness....

The famous naturalist Sir Peter Scott gave Nessie a Latin name.

This was Nessiteras rhombopteryx, which he said was: Greek for "Ness inhabitant with diamond-shaped fin".

...but what else did it mean?

There is an Italian song about the Loch Ness monster which suggests the reason it is so elusive is that it spends a lot of time asleep - Nessun Dorma.
