Two re-geared 08s or 09s to top 'n tail and a couple of Mk2s - how's that for a Pacer replacement?

Thats not as stupid as it sounds, IIRC 14s used to work passenger trains on the branches, and such a layout could be suitable for an ELR C'Ford to Bury Bolton St service, as the'll still be mainline registered.

I wonder if GBRf will be interested in the 09s? Their higher speed could make them attractive to buyers, depending on their condition of course.

They are faster (27.5 mph for an 09, 15 for an 08) but the payoff is they aren't as good haulers, hence why DBS are getting rid.

The condition is variable tbh, some are wrecks, some are running locos, needing little work to get them back to good condition.

Sounds good to me, in our area, I used to imagine an 08 with 2 Mk1's on the St Ives branch, would have been around the early 1980's, never told anyone about it though...until now:lol:

Last time I worked through Bescot (late March I think) I'm sure it was still stabled in front of the Down Tower in the yard, sandwiched between a couple more 08s and the remaining 37s. There's nowhere to stable it Walsall station either, I doubt very much it would have been left in the bay platform.

;)

Ok, so one or two people have "smiled" at the idea of a couple of 08/09s being regeared to work in a push-pull formation with a few Mk2s...

So realistically, without going overboard with costs - could an 08/09 be regeared to operate at say 50-60mph (with a corresponding reduction in haulage pwer).

I've no doubt it could be possible somehow, but the question is would it be particularly stable?

Are the 08s known for their track skipping bounciness?

I did wonder about just the single "Co" layout, but then Staedler units operate with a single "Bo" unit albeit that is located within the unit rather than drawing or pushing.

I've seen a couple at full tilt on poor track and they bounce un-nervingly. They don't seem to handle poor track very well at all, the Eastleigh ones used to derail fairly often.

I sign 08s and 09s, although I've not been on one for quite a while, but I can say that they're more than a bit lively at their respective maximum speeds, especially if they've not had any works attention for some time. Having coupled wheels with outside rods makes them waddle from side to side a fair bit anyway, a hangover from steam days engineering this, confirmed when I had a cab ride in a GW Pannier Tank a few months ago!

It may be possible to gear them for higher speeds but the physical motion of the outside rods would cause serious vibrations at anything over their normal maximum. Since starting on the railway in 1982 I think I've been on something like 30 of them, and no two seem to be alike, of all the older diesel classes thay are by far the most characterful to actually work on.

Wouldn't mind one myself one day... ;)

So how much (roughly) would an 08/09 shunter cost to buy, one that would require minimal work to get it going again? Im not seriously considering buying one so don't tell me about finding a home and transporting it etc, just curious as to what they cost?

have seen this asked on another forum... i think it was on wnxx...
the response posted on whichever forum it was... said that a class 08 or 09 would probably cost as much as a class 37... cant remember who posted it, what site it was posted on, and whether the 08-vs-37 cost was based on non operational examples or on operational locos

Anyway, here's me around 1982 at Penzance station for the masses 'amusement' ...
