On the same day, APT (front car 370 003) is stabled at Carlisle and contrasts with 85019. I saw the APT running a couple of times, but never managed to ride on it. Well, there was no rush was there - they would iron out the teething issues and it would be in service for the next 25 years....

21/10/86. 87025 pulls out of Glasgow Central with the 09.10 service for Euston. I loved a bit of overhead gantry 'clutter' in photos, it can work especially well with the compression of a telephoto lens - not that I had one!

10/07/86. 37421 in splendid West Highland livery waits at Georgemas Junction having arrived with the 18.00 from Wick. The stock from the 18.01 from Thurso will be attached and the long rumble to Inverness can commence. I was obviously confident enough of this to have alighted the train to grab the shot, I would have been sleeping in the signal box if I had got that wrong!

The memories! My teen friends and I used to take our school lunchtimes at our local WCML station, which coincided with the APT's passing. Alas, my 110 camera (remember them?) never did photograpghic justice to the speeding train.

Discovered and scanned today, this might have shot straight into my top 10. A late photo for me, from my penultimate roll of film.

28/05/85. BR could sometimes be much less welcoming. In my defence I was photographing, not spotting. 40 years on, the Statute of Limitations probably now allows me to reveal it is 47541 'The Queen Mother' at Nottingham depot!

47's were everywhere in the mid 80's, from passenger to freight they worked it all. Perhaps a little maligned due to their sheer preponderance, it is hard to deny they are not a classic in design - well proportioned, clean but purposeful. In other words, ideal for turning a camera towards...

29/07/85. Recently named 47616 'Red Dragon / Y Ddraig Goch' will shortly be put to work on the 0855 Penzance - Newcastle, replacing the 'Hoover' at Plymouth. Notice the appropriate emblem between the marker lights.

25/08/85. I can remember the inspiration for this shot. A few years before I was spotting at Liverpool St and was approached by a photographer with a file of photos he had developed and printed and was selling to enthusiasts. I chose a tightly cropped shot of a silver roofed Stratford 47 taken from above - I loved that the roof of locos seem to be rarely captured and that the louvres of this particular class were so graphic. This is my homage to that image.

13/07/86. 37415 heads up the 14.00 departure to Inverness at Kyle of Lockalsh. It's only early afternoon but the mists are swirling and the Syphon's lights already pierce the soup. What I assume are fishing nets remind me of those I once saw in Cochin, India.

The piercing headlights and seagulls circling remind me of this one, also taken in Scotland.

Those waterside frames, I know what you mean. I had the chance to try one, whilst in Cochin (a month travelling around India's most southerly states). It's harder than it looks!

Wow, I remember watching the local fishermen operating them - I seem to recall a counterweight system using stones to fine tune the balance. I wonder if those ones at Kyle of Lochalsh are actually for salmon farming, the Cochin nets are fairly unique.

Thank you! The circular arch of the bridge and its reflection almost gives the feel of a shot through a fisheye type lens.
