Northern Rail Vacancies

Well I m applying for the newcastle one and looking at the form theres a few bits which seem impossible for me to fill in.

I did a weeks work experience at Chester-le-Street station so hopefuly that might help.

how do they have a change in business requirements,last week they needed a driver this week they don't why?

Due to the "age" of depots in the area guards that went driving went where the vacancies were, these normally being Yorkshire depots especially Leeds.

Drivers have had transfer requests in for Darlington and now they been granted.

I did the online test and Northern said they would get back to me after the 8th April.

Just want to know how long it usualy takes for northern to reply.

Can vary immensely after you complete the DSI test, just depends if they are busy. Average is often three weeks ish, but to their credit they always reply, unlike many other TOCs.

The deadline is for 14/03/2011, however the job seems to have disappeared off website, i am still completing my form online, as i got in before it went. I have emailed Northern to see if its still valid.

Knowing my recent luck the job will be pulled, i have already passed the testing at Doncaster last year, just need to pass an interview with a train company now

Hi did you pay to take the tests at Doncaster? Were you interviewed? I am currently looking at Mechanical and Spatial Relations tests which were recommended. I was thinking about paying and taking the test to see if I can get the certificate. I may well never become a train driver and I am brave enough to look for other options but it would be great just to have a go at these tests.

Quite quickly once the deadline has passed, which IIRC is around the 24th?

I see you live at Skipton, not sure if Northern would be flexible but normally for a job such as this you require your own transport due to the unsociable working hours.

I applied for a role nearly a month ago, still waiting for the outcome. I did do an online test for it, though at was at the end of last month. Fingers crossed they don't pull it.

I wonder though, the position was based at Manchester, I am based in Liverpool. There are very regularly train services between them at all manner of the day (or night), would I be required to have my own transport? or would travelling by train be acceptable?

One thing about the TPO job is when they are night shifts, which I think they mostly are, they will usually be covered by last train into work, first train home for many locations.

They'd probably like you to have your own transport but depends on what station you are travelling from and where the work is. Not much fun if you finish your shift and have to wait a few hours to get back home.

The position was within Manchester Piccadilly itself. Fortunately my nearest station (about 15 minute walk) is Liverpool Lime Street.

No i took the tests as part of the recruitment process for Nexus, Tyne and Wear metro. I would suggest getting a hold of a cd rom ' How to become a train driver'
these give you a good idea of what happens in the tests.

Just an update for all those who applied for the York Conductor vacancy (me being one of them).

Spoke to Northern Recruitment today and was told the vacancy is no longer available, although they may have positions available later in the year. They've had some communication problems and should communicate this to applicants in the next week or so.

On the 25th March 2011, I took the Online Dependability and Safety Instrument test.

It is now the 21st April, I've not heard anything back yet. Is this a bad sign?

mine was better than that. Got the same and they said they should give me an update in the next 4 weeks as to wether i go through to the interview stage.

This was for the RPA job at Newcastle.

Applied for CSA at Manchester Oxford Road, did online testing 15th of the 4th, waiting to hear back.

Hopefully a month wait is a good sign!

well just had a email to say that the vancancy i applied for at york as now bee withdrawn and i should re apply to future vancancies not too god at all this was 3 months ago when i applied.

That's bad but not as damaging as those who took the assessment (and passed) to be told they would have to start the process over again.

Do these HR lot reliase that youth unemployment is so high that its a major problem. The TOC's always seem to give these jobs to adults in their 30's and 40's.
We 18 to 24 lot should be top priority and these older lot should give in take.

So you are advocating age discrimination? What next, jobs for men but not for women? Jobs for those with a chip on their shoulder or an attitude problem over those who don't have one? People should (and are, I hope) be chosen on merit, not age, gender, ethnicity, etc.
