I got a reply from Northern today and I have not been put through to the next stage

Do these HR lot reliase that youth unemployment is so high that its a major problem. The TOC's always seem to give these jobs to adults in their 30's and 40's.
We 18 to 24 lot should be top priority and these older lot should give in take.

I'm 19 and a work for a TOC. I got in on first attempt.

So you are advocating age discrimination? What next, jobs for men but not for women? Jobs for those with a chip or their shoulder or an attitude problem over those who don't have one? People should (and are, I hope) be chosen on merit, not age, gender, ethnicity, etc.

There are bound to be plenty of 18 to 24 year olds that have skills to work on the railways. I passed the online DSI test so you cant say I dont have the skills.

The TOC's should be creating jobs for youths with skills. If you read the news you will see how bad youth unemployment is.

I do not have an attitude problem thank you very much. I' m a nice and friendly guy. I' m just a bit upset because of not going through.

Quite the contrary, Virgin Trains recently advertised a job scheme in job centres which was only open to 18-24 year olds, which they had illegally misadvertised causing a lot of disappointment for large numbers of ineligible people.

I just say, keep trying and you will get there eventually. The beauty of Northerns job app system is once you've applied for one job, it takes just seconds to apply for similar other posts. Get to the point where the recruitment team are getting a headache seeing your name every day, and they may just eventually offer you a job.

There probably wont be anymore advertised for Newcastle I bet.

East coast dont recruit that often and same with XC i think. TPE dont seem to advertise Newcastle ether.

Which role was this for? I havent seen any XC jobs at Newcastle recently.

I applied for a TPE trainee driver position this time last year at NCL but failed the managers interview.


The north east (well Newcastle) does seem to be a tough place to get into. I only live a stones throw away from Heaton TMD to Northern and TPE would be brilliant companies for me! East Coast will never recruit trainee drivers.

Heres hoping for some more trainee roles in the future.

I think to make a start on the railway, everone should consider you may have to move to get the job you really want. At 18, after getting ignored by my three local companies for station staff jobs, I moved across the country for a (much better) job with Intercity and had a great time - once you're through the door, it's not too difficult to relocate back home via the internal vacancy list, or via adverts for qualified staff.

I've put an application in for Manchester, i currently live in North East england but my girlfriend has a property in Huddersfield, and my property is up for sale, so i assume its ok to say i live within an hour of Manchester ?

I'm hoping i might get an interview as i have already passed the Psychometric testing when applying for Tyne and Wear metro. At least the whole process end to end is under 6 weeks. Now i'm going to swat up on Northern just in case i get an interview.

Hudds is 25 mins away, with 24hr train service. Loads of TPE, and Northern staff live there.

The Customer Service Dispatch and Gateline Operator roles that I applied for at Manchester Oxford Road have been withdrawn.

Although my application for a CSA at Oxford Road (and the application is older than the withdrawn ones) is still being listed as 'Online Testing Complete' fingers crossed. ha.

Just applied for a train presentation operative job at Heaton in Newcastle.

I should have a better chance now because since the last job I applied for I did 8 weeks work experience in a shop as a shop assistant which involved cleaning shelves.

Also this one is much nearer than the Darlington one i applied for last year.

It might be worth applying anyway, if you have just come out of education for example. I've just looked at the vacancy and I can't see where it says 2 years experience.

One thing I am certain of, that station is coming along nicely and at a rapid pace!

It could also be educational references, or a good reason.

Always apply, don't be put off by something like that.
