The whole point of the trolley is to provide at seat catering. So 150 really isnt suitable for such long distance routes on a regular basis.
I never said it was - I was just explaining that you won't see a trolley coming through a 150, regardless of how busy or quiet the service is. Believe me, I hate seeing 150s on long distance services, and I'm happy for every extra 197 that comes into service and reduces the chances of that happening! It's worth pointing out that TfW are no longer training new drivers in the north on 150s so hopefully that means their days outside of the Valleys are numbered. Training hasn't taken place for 175s either for a while now as the transition to 197s gathers pace.

Hopefully it won't be too long before 197s are in West Wales to Carmarthen and milford Haven. Be glad to see the end of 150s and 153s down this end the world.

I was indeed referring to the horrible Voyager after my ten minute ride on the 197.
I prefer the spongy early 2000s Alstom seating also used in the Pendolinos and the 458s and 334s albeit a bit cramped. It's mainly the cleanliness (or lack of) that irks me about them most, but Avanti's ones are newly refurbished and state of the art in my mind. I'd prefer an Avanti Voyager to a 196/195 anyday (not tried a 197 yet, but I'm abroad next week so no chance).

I sat by the toilet on a 150 (unsurprisingly it was the only free seat left when I boarded) and the aisle there was very narrow but looked wide enough for a trolley. Maybe it would get stuck in between the line of seats opposite as it would have to curve around.

On a booked 3 car Diagram too so it's got a decent chance of sticking to the diagram.
Yes, beautifully on time (early in fact), just boarded - many thanks.
Looking forward to seeing many more /1s in South Wales by the end of the year.

on 197001/197013 today i noticed you werent able to walk between the 2 sets. I caught them between Neath and Port talbot Parkway on the 1505 Swansea-Chester. Luckily i noticed before Baglan and got off 001 and onto 013! I like to travel on both sets when they are new ones for me and both of these were. The train i caught back from Port talbot was a rather overcrowded pair of 153s which was covering one of the booked 197s. I think the 1505 Chester may have been the only one worked to Swansea today.

If they could run them at the same time then it would be possible to run 197's on the intermediate hourly services that do not attach or detach at Machynlleth for Pwllheli services.
Only if the 'intermediate hourly services' (roughly half past the even hours from Aberystwyth and Shrewsbury) start/terminate at Shrewsbury and the unit from Aberystwyth arriving in Shrewsbury is booked to head straight back to Aberystwyth again. Often what appears to be an Aberystwyth-Shrewsbury service (with no Pwllheli portion) in the timetable actually runs as Aberystwyth-Birmingham (coupling to a Holyhead-Birmingham at Shrewsbury).

Overall I think the 158's would still be better from a passenger point of view. For conductors, I could see it being 50/50 as to which units they prefer. some pro's: 197's get a crew door in the cab, can view CCTV live, Aircon in the rear cab!!, selective door opening (especially great for the 4 car service on the coast should it continue), station dwell times on busy coast services should be reduced. But then, the access ramp is in 2 parts and awkward, there is a lack of luggage racks, bike spaces will be a point of contention and worst of all, only 1 toilet per 2 car unit.
Drivers I think will majority prefer the 197's.
Agreed - as a passenger (I am not railway staff) the 158s are better from my point of view so I'm dead against the 197s, but I can understand staff wanting them to replace 158s. Shame we couldn't have a new train that actually improves things for both passengers and staff.

Will they ever appear here on the Cambrian, and is the upgrade to a full hourly service dependent on them? I don't mind the 158s so I'm in no hurry for 197s themselves, but if we need 197s for the hourly service it'll be frustrating...

There has been an hourly service between Shrewsbury and Aberystwyth on Sundays for a few years now, and there are more TfW 158s (24 units) than there are ETCS-fitted 197s on-order (21 units) so introducing the hourly service should absolutely be possible whether or not the 158s are eventually replaced by 197s. There are however concerns that the TfW timetable review (budget cuts?) could see the plans for Cambrian hourly axed.

I don't believe for one second the 158s won't be able to work at the same time as the 197s. For one thing, the whole line was shut last year for several days for ERTMS to be upgraded to make it compatible with 197s. And for another, it's going to be very hard to train MCN and PWL drivers if they can't drive them on the Cambrian.

The last I heard, one of the DIs from another depot who is part of the 197 training team is meant to be learning the Cambrian so they can train Cambrian drivers. Can't see them doing that if they need to shut the line to normal traffic to do. I suspect something's been lost in communication somewhere.
Perhaps somebody heard that the ETCS had to be upgraded to be compatible with the 197s, but missed that it had already been done and thought that the upgrade would make the 158s unable to operate?

Thanks, that does make a bit more sense. 197s and 158s can rescue each other but it requires an adaptor and it's a 5mph to clear the line job so definitely not ideal!

To a point. The 2 minutes wait to set it up every time you change end/formation is a bit annoying. Hopefully the 197s will be better in that respect! Though it's also a very quick an easy step to isolate the system altogether if needs be (just not so easy to reinstate, hence why it's normally left on all the time).
The lack of ERTMS actually shows up as a fault on the TMS screen on every non ERTMS fitted unit!
I seem to vaguely recall reading/hearing that Network Rail (and/or the safety regulator) insist on ERTMS* being 'switched on' (ie. not isolated) at all times if fitted and that this was the reason only 21 class 197s are expected to be delivered with ETCS rather than all 77 (because TfW don't want to have to deal with the 2 minute set up time on non-Cambrian routes).

* or should that be ETCS - isn't ETRMS just ETCS plus GSM(R) the latter having already replaced the NRN radio nationwide?

Relatively limited opportunities until they can go further west as there’s not much they could work given how few trains from the east terminate there.
Do the Swanline services terminate at Swansea or do they run through to Llanelli now?

The Avanti Voyagers are now what I aim for if travelling on the WCML (and probably the north Wales coast given the near total disappearance of the class 175s, my decreased tollerance of hard seats following COVID lockdown and TfW's general lack of reservations), provided I can get a reservation in the coach which is (almost) all tables aligned with the windows.

Are we still judging 197s before stepping aboard? I've heard nothing but good things off friends who have used them.

They do for most people. Where individual tastes vary, you unfortunately can’t please everyone.
I can’t remember if it was said on here or elsewhere but the general public seem to love the new trains whether that be the 197’s the 230’s or the 231’s. It only seems to be those of us who are more ‘enthusiastic’ about trains that are not so pleased.

Overall I think the 197’s are pretty nice even from a passenger point (a slight downgrade in comfort but in my eyes, a good portion of that comes down to them being rough over jointed track, when running on CWR they’re very pleasant.)
The main benefits for passengers of 197’s will be increased service frequency with more coaches and greater reliability. Unfortunately the 158’s are knocking on a bit and the maintenance depot do have issues getting parts for them. At times they end up having a donor unit that they rob bits off to fox other units until they can get the spare parts in then put all the new bits into the donor unit to get that one working again. Unfortunately this is only getting worse and will continue to get a bigger problem.
Just the other day there were 10 units with faults that kept them out of service at Machynlleth.

From what TFW say it’s supposed to be a review into new travel patterns, which seem to be more leisure based, so I would like to think routes such as the Cambrian would be more favoured for its uptick in service frequency.
To add to that they’ve hired a load more guards and drivers at Machynlleth in preparation for introduction of Sundays into the working week, the hourly service and 197 training. So I really hope they don’t axe it.

08:54 Manchester Piccadilly - Manchester Airport is running as 5 coaches today. Is this going to be a regular working or is it a one off?

It's booked a 5 car between Chester-Airport-Chester.
That's the only section where 5 cars are cleared for service as it stands.

Until less than an hour ago 197015 was showing on RTT as running 0730 Manchester all the way to Carmarthen, which I knew would be swapped due to 197s not going to Carmarthen yet but it looks like it's swapping for a 150 at Cardiff rather than Swansea unfortunately.

197001 however is doing the 1055 Swansea to Manchester and 197006 scheduled for the 1505 Swanline/Chester.

Availability is still really poor with the 197s, 2 of them are covering parts of 175 diagrams but there are 6 197 diagrams covered by 15x/175 and 4 uncovered/shortformed.
Having the Marches blocked again by Saturdays incident hasn't helped as things are in the wrong place.

Hopefully reliability and availability pick up soon, hopefully as more units are accepted familiarity will increase which should help.

Hearing rumours that another round (and should be the last) of ETCS 197 testing is to take place in December.
Crew training for the Cambrian then to begin around May / June 2024 and planned introduction of 197’s into Cambrian passenger services for December 2024.

Poor, but could be worse I guess.
To be fair I think it’s a positive, a realistic timescale given how everything else has been going.
The only negative is that training will be starting during the summer at the same time summer crew shortages/cancellations usually start possibly making this worse.

I was thinking the same, it’s actually quite nice to be given a longer more realistic time frame for once.

In regards to crew training, they’ve over recruited to account for it, for Mach, I believe, currently there are about 8 additional drivers within the training process and I think 1 more due to start later this year.
For guards an additional 5 have recently passed out with 3 more in training.
So this should help alleviate any issues with resourcing train crew.
On the other hand, Pwllheli is struggling a bit for guards but is OK for drivers.

Once the 197 training is done these additional members will then be sufficient to cover Sundays in the working week and the hourly service.

I agree I would rather a realistic timescale and disappointment can be avoided then. For example, I was under the impression earlier in the year the 197s would start running to Swansea from the May TT but they didnt start until about 4 months later and still havent made it further West. So it would have been better to give a more realistic timescale.

Hi folks, anyone happen to know if any 197’s have been on the Shrewsbury - Birmingham line for testing ? I’ve not heard of anything but it seems like a route they would have wanted to get sorted. Thanks

None heard of yet, they've been along part of it though when dragged from Donnington to Crewe, if that counts

As far as im aware the plan is still that Birmingham will effectively fall under the Cambrian for testing as the way the diagrams are there's little benefit doing one without the other.

There's only so many people on the team and its more beneficial doing other routes first with the West Wales routes being the main priority at the moment.

Birmingham-Shrewsbury hasn't had a clearance run, shouldn't require too much work anyway as the near identical 196s are up and down there so finding any unexpected issues, certainly between New Street and Shrewsbury should be almost nil.

Hopefully the Birmingham Shrewsbury section will be a one trip yes all Fits and works. So they can enter service there. But I am glad to hear west is now priority, does that include the pembrokeshire branches? If so which ones?

I'd imagine they will do Milford Haven first as the long distance services run through from.there. I don't think Tenby/Pembroke Dock was due.to switch to 197s until May 2024 anyway.

It'll take a bit more than that but it shouldn't have anything unexpected. Will still need the ASDO databases building and a few bits and pieces round 6 car working.

AFAIK the main aim was to be Milford first with Fishguard not too far behind, then the 197s can (once Swansea to Carmarthen is signed off) run the whole way Milford to Manchester. Pembroke is mostly a shuttle anyway so doesn't impact on through running so much.

Yes I'm aware, hopefully pembroke can see them for next summer though, given it can get quite busy.

Re the database: could they not gather some information from the 196 database given the same door positions ect?

Depending on how much was set up on the 196s then potentially yes. I've no idea in all honesty how they operate or how many coaches they did clear for those though.

The 196s can only run up to 4 car as their ASDO is isolated, and some platforms can't take more than 4 car. They may not have even set up ASDO, as I believe it was isolated from the off!
