Sorry, I meant the second of the two booked Manchester but I had got my directions mixed up! 1955 to Manchester, but of course it's 1930 FROM Manchester booked 197.
Ah ok. No worries!

Sorry, I meant the second of the two booked Manchester but I had got my directions mixed up! 1955 to Manchester, but of course it's 1930 FROM Manchester booked 197.

Apparently:
1052 Cardiff to Manchester - 197021 in lieu of 67+MK4
1549 Cardiff to Manchester - 197010 197 as booked (but short formed)
1855 Cardiff to Manchester - 197001 in lieu of 67+MK4
are the booked 197 Manchesters at the moment, according to RTT.
If what I think happens happens!

The Mk4 should do the 10:52/18:55 Manchester.

Either 197001 or 021 then goes with 010 on the 1549. That diagram needs to be a multi car 15x/175/197 really or else the 2030 has no unit in Manchester.
The only way round that is sending the Mk4 back to Crewe and set swapping it.

We'll see but that's my educated guess for it!

Either way, both will likely be seen as more preferable to the sadly now common sight of a 150 by most, so that’s something.

I can see that, as is becoming very very common on TfW (yet some continue to have the gall to get visibly outraged and defensive when the helpless TOC is criticised) and what I want to know is why, yet again, it has been put into the data feeds as though it were always this way, and as though it is a scheduled Holyhead Chester service. It is not. It is a Holyhead Cardiff service which appears to have been curtailed at Chester, so why on earth isn’t it showing as that.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Yes, I might of known the trained driver shortage scandal would be behind it, but why on earth isn’t it showing as a Holyhead Cardiff service cancelled from Chester/Shrewsbury?

RTT from the Marches stations don’t show a cancellation at all, just as if the service never existed. P-Coding?? Transpennine got publicly slapped on the wrist for this, and Drakeford’s “greatly-improved” nationalised railway should also be unable to get away with it.
It really annoys me when they do that. Rather than show as cancelled (or part cancelled) they pretend it never existed! And delay repay would apply if someone had an advance ticket.

Good to see them using a 197 to cover for the absent MK4 better than the usual Sprinters that cover. Shame the 1549 is going to be short formed as a result but great to see them finally working South Wales to Manchester.

On RTT, 197 001 was replaced by 158 831 at Chester on 1V91.
So that would seem to have torpedoed much of the day's 197 Marches plan, on top of there being no Mk4 "Gerald" service...

What's the issue with 5-car 197s on the Marches?
I thought that was always part of the master plan.

Seems to be all sorts running round on different diagrams today.
1V91 was never going to be a Mk4 since Friday as the set was cancelled with no crew so that was a certainly that wouldn't run.

They're not signed off yet. Few little glitches to overcome, mostly with the way ASDO works before 5 (and 6s) can work in service but eventually they'll be signed off.

With the Marches, there's a big step up in complications when 4 cars becomes 5. Other than Whitchurch - Yorton (inclusive) 4 cars will fit everywhere between Manchester/Chester and Cardiff. Increase it to 5 and things start to get a lot more complicated, so you really need ASDO working properly.

Welcome to the wonderful world of the Railway!
Your obsession with RTT is irrelevant to passengers, who would generally look at National Rail, which shows the service as cancelled and the reason why. That's all the information passengers need to know.

A disgraceful farce.

Meanwhile, the genius powers that be, have again allocated 5 carriages to 1V92 from Chester - one that survived the cheeky P CODING - and due to the failure to sign off 5 cars on the route, we'll have either another case of rear set being locked out, or the additional coaches not being attached. And those coaches will be even more needed today, with 2 cancellations.

What are you getting sarky and defensive for?
People are getting defensive because of overactive posters that want to pick out every single little detail of the operation, and openly criticise the people that are working tirelessly just to keep the service running. Some posters obsession in having the exact traction on it's booked journey is an unrealistic expectation for a TOC that is short of train crew, short of units and are struggling to keep the service running.
No-one is denying things arent great. But your continual overanalysing and criticising is frustrating many people on the front line.

Might I suggest www.comeaboard.co.uk and you show everyone how you can do a better job?

As far as im aware they won't be 197s and will in fact be a Mk4 which has been the plan since 1W96 was cancelled on Friday.

TFW are obviously failing to run a decent service, hence James Price being hauled up in front of MP's. It is clear to see that Management have no grasp on anything that is happening, and no-one here is denying that.
Exactly my thoughts. Obviously TfW staff can't say that, even pseudonymously, on a public forum but I can empathise with them when they're not being given the tools and training to do their jobs. I appreciate the info they are able to give us here.

I’m sorry that you’re frustrated by my criticism of genuine issues. I’m frustrated that I’m faced with a large poster at Queen Street everyday saying “From 2023, over 80% of journeys will be on New Trains” and see this shambles. Do not take any embarrassment you have over the appalling service of TfW out on customers airing their right to be unhappy.

Well said. It’s so frustrating that when you do the job to the best of your ability for the greater good with the tools at your disposal that you then get hammered even though the alternative for you was to do nothing and have less services running with less capacity on those that do run.

I’ve often invited people to come over to planning when they fancy a pop but funnily enough never take the offer up. They never will because then they might find out what the reality actually is, a reason I hate this forum phrase ‘random unit generator’ like it’s done for fun. Ok then, we’ll cancel the train instead of subbing this 156 for a 150.

I generally find that those that like to criticise do not like to be on the receiving end of criticism from people like themselves. I always say, walk the walk first and see what we have to deal with before moaning at every verse end.

Did some of you perhaps choose to deliberately skip over this? ;)
I’m not denying that their staff work incredibly hard, and I have so much respect for really lovely members like @sd0733 (a forum favourite of mine) and the others, but something has to be going wrong with the way TfW and its services are being managed. It’s possibly a senior issue caused by the senior powers that be

I’ve never once criticised the planners. I’ve criticised the TOC itself for being a shambles, and added that it’s likely down to management. Another thread that will now no doubt become extensively moderated or threatened with closure, because a small group of people cannot handle their TOC being criticised, unite and come down on the criticism together like a ton of defensive bricks, and then - thanks to the power of numbers - they’ve cleverly made it look like the original poster was out of order!

EDIT: All three 197 allocations on CDF MAN have disappeared, the first and last reverting to MK4 as booked and the booked 197 now withholding the allocation. I wonder if any 197 will even make it to Manchester?

The trouble is that by criticising management then you are seen to be criticising planners as most of us are management grade. Maybe not using the generalised ‘management’ word would help our perception of what you are saying ;)

Alright, well the bigwigs in the corporate offices then ;) I’m well aware that the planners work their a.sses off and do the best they can with a complicated (understatement) fleet, I’m honestly not the Karen you think, much as I’ll admit I’ve been venting about TfW much more lately. :)

I think 9.5 out of 10 people on here would fully understand that you and all railway staff are doing their best with the tools they have. But that doesn't make the railways immune from passengers making valid points, as @TT-ONR-NRN has, and attempting to silence people in the public domain really isn't a good look. If people ae promised something that doesn't happen, then naturally they are going to question why that is the case and everyone has a right to be able to do that. It's up to you and other rail staff to be a little thicker skinned and understand that none of this is personal against individuals, it is an issue against the TOC and no doubt, DfT as well.

Oh, and the argument of "well you come and do a better job" is never an argument to be used. I've not chosen that career path, you have, so it is down to you to work with your employer to find the solutions, not for you to simply throw a paddy and invite everyone questioning you to come and do the job for you!

I appreciate that this is moving things off-topic so I will leave it there, but I felt I needed to jump in as @TT-ONR-NRN is facing a bit of an unfair barrage for simply making valid points based on his observations of how things are right now!

The same offices we work in ;)

Planning is a role very few people want to do. It’s fraught with frustration and constantly changing plans, helping colleagues working 2 or 3 jobs in different parts of the department to keep ever changing plans in place. Not easy at all and it doesn’t always work out as we are only human.
I think 9.5 out of 10 people on here would fully understand that you and all railway staff are doing their best with the tools they have. The problem is that too many people on here don’t appreciate the work that goes in to providing a train plan that works with all the obstacles thrown in the way because they only see their side and nobody else’s (if you come on this forum it’s rare to not get an explanation of any issues, it’s down to those who don’t understand to try and actually understand instead of criticising). I am also a rail user and get frustrated when my commute goes wrong but would never criticise the staff, whether it be those on the frontline taking the flack or those of us in the offices taking the flack on forums like this. Would you like flack for doing your job if it goes wrong because the stars haven’t aligned today?

Where have I said “come and do a better job” or “come and do my job for me”?

If you read it right you’ll see I invite people to come and observe the job to understand the issues but people don’t want to (probably scared to see what we put up with on a day to day basis) so I will continue to defend the role of planning when it is criticised. I’ve observed other jobs that I’m not interested in doing to gain an understanding of it, where’s the harm in that?

RTT is a useful tool for checking what is allocated to each service. I'm sure I have seen TFW encouraging passengers on twitter to check RTT to see how many carriages are on their booked train. So even though the majority of the public use NRE or the TOC own website/app for information it does get used by the public not just enthusiasts. I think they should show the service as being cancelled with the reason why when its 'removed from the timetable'. Besides im sure on the journey check on NRE ive seen services removed before without it showing as cancelled, possibly if its been planned days in advance rather than on the day maybe.

As a train enthusiast I find it interesting to see what traction turns up against what is booked for the service. Its not always a complaint when i 150 turns up instead of a 175 or 197, just an observation.

I think everyone here fully appreciates all the hard work the staff at TFW do and nobody is personally having a go at them when they complain about the service. But as passengers we are entitled to complain. I've often defended TFW to other people who are not train enthusiasts and don't understand why they cant just add more carriages to overcrowded 2 car trains or why there arent enough drivers so services have to be amended and cancelled. As a customer they just see what they are getting is a bad service for the money they have paid.

The points TT-ONR-NRN has made are all valid and its unfair to say he is being overcritical. Some people seem to be taking it as a personal insult rather than it being about the company itself not any individual members of staff.

Anyway, regarding the 197s, did the 1549 actually get worked by a 197 today?

I appreciate this support on my point, and yes that’s exactly it. I’m a restaurant senior chef and believe me, it’s not my fault when suppliers don’t deliver all ingredients so several dishes are off the menu, or we’re too busy to seat everyone without a wait, etc. but we would never dream of getting angry at customers who complained, whether we’re any less happy about the situation that they are or not.

Railway staff are (unfortunately for them, perhaps) no different to other customer service industries in that they should remember a complaint (and especially on a chatroom/ forum!) typically isn’t personal, it’s professional. It reminds me of Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, where the owners at the poor restaurants absolutely refuse to hear any home truths from the patrons or Ramsay himself.

Moving on…
Anyway, regarding the 197s, did the 1549 actually get worked by a 197 today?
…It did. A pair. I saw them at Central. 042/048

But that's the working life, work is rarely appreciated unless everything is perfect. I work as a travel consultant for a tour operator and there are times when I do lots and lots of work behind the scenes to get our guests onto holidays they desire, that are maybe once in a lifetime type trips. Do you think they appreciate the work I have done to get everything perfect for them if the airline then cancels the flight, or one of the planned activities is cancelled and do you think they go out of their way to understand why the issue has arose? Of course they don't, all that goes out of the window and they are just baying for my blood the minute they arrive home! So whether I like it or not, I get flack in my job when things go wrong that are out of mine (and even our own company's control)!
Where have I said “come and do a better job” or “come and do my job for me”?

You certainly implied it, in my opinion, and @Caaardiff literally said it! But if you just mean to observe that is fair enough, but why am I (as a travel consultant) going to want to have a day off from my job to come and observe your job when I have zero interest in working on the railway in any capacity?

I can't help but feel that you (and others) are taking this far too personally when the poster in question has clearly stated that they feel there is no doubt hard working people trying to fix the issues. The issue being questioned is far bigger and broader to be just about individuals or even individual departments. Remember that this is predominantly an enthusiast forum, and you're not always going to see opinions you like or agree with because we are entitled to the same opinions as any regular traveller be that a daily commuter or a once a month leisure traveller!

I'm not trying to annoy people, wind people up or fall out with people but I don't agree with an opinion being shouted down in such a way as was the case here. Anyway, we are really drifting now, so I promise this will be my last word on the matter.

I think what's being forgotten here though Is that we aren't at work, we are posting in our own time giving information that people, in most cases otherwise wouldn't get.
I get both sides that there Is a lot of frustration at the moment with the way things are but unfortunately the fact is control have the issue of sending the wrong unit or cancelling the train, resources have the choice that they can cover a job with someone who doesn't sign one bit and do a unit swap or leave the whole job uncovered. There's many reasons why things happen, many not obvious to most people but often they can be claimed to be "excuses".
Whilst we are at work, in uniform then, yes, we are representing the company and get flack that's to be expected but whilst on here we are simply posters who are offering information and not here in a work capacity so it's not an entirely fair comparison.

Anyway, as this is way off topic I feel we should leave it here!!

Bringing it back to 197s! The first pair have now left Crewe on their way becoming the first to go beyond Crewe.

Last thing I have to say. I gave up giving info about the new Northern fleet tender a while back due to a poster who works for the same company as me essentially telling me I don’t know my own job and that they knew better and could basically plan better. Never took me up on the offer of a day shadowing me unsurprisingly so they could see the various aspects of planning for themselves to see if they could actually do it.

Now that I’ve been shown to be correct they aren’t commenting on the post and I haven’t commented either even though I could put a hell of a lot of speculation on there about the tender to bed. Some is quite close to what is happening, most of it is way off the mark. People are interested, I’ve got most of the answers but due to one posters previous attitude I ain’t enlightening anyone even though I know a lot more about the plans than probably anybody on here.

I think it’s time to stop giving helpful info out and just to let people do it through official channels instead and probably end up without the answers that they would probably otherwise get on here.

As you say, we do this in our own time, no longer feel it’s worth the effort of trying to help.

Because you have an interest in the railway industry?

I know it's not going to happen, but I'd love the chance to observe planning, control, signalling, driving, maintenance or any aspect of the industry.

I'm retired now but would have happily taken annual leave to do so.

What would you say to someone who was interested in the travel industry and wanted to come and see what your working day was like?

The sticking point at present with the Carmarthen route is a platform issue at Ferryside so once that's resolved (which I've no idea when that will be) then they'll be able to begin.
