I'm intending to make a trip from Westhoughton to Manchester Central Zone on a Friday the 0949 train - and for this I can buy an Off-Peak Day Return for £7.50. I hold a 26-30 Railcard but there is a minimum fare before 10am, and so it would be pointless using it in this case.

Now for my return leg, I do not know whether I will be returning before or after 1600 (the start of the evening peak). If I am returning in the evening peak I understand that I am able to excess an OPDR to an Anytime Return. Am I right in thinking that the price would be half the difference between the two tickets? ie (£10.80 - £7.50)/2 = £1.65

Where can this be done - can I do this on the train from the guard or will it have to be done at a ticket office? Can I get a railcard discount on the excess (ie a third off the £1.65) - not that it matters for such a small sum but the principal is there?

Thanks

Think you'd have to pay the whole difference, not half difference, and not sure if it would be eligible for railcard discount due to the time when the outward journey was made as this would have the effect of retrospectively making the ticket "invalid" by virtue of the minimum fare which would have been applicable. Be inclined to get any XS from the relevant ticket office in Manchester before returning back to Westhoughton, to avoid the potential for hassle from Northern's revenue protection staff on the way back

Anyone concur / disagree?

On the train is fine, but don’t necessarily expect the onboard staff to know what to do, they might simply give up and not bother, but there are recent cases of Northern (station staff) issuing penalty fares for this sort of thing, which is totally wrong but nonetheless happens. If you want to avoid this possibility then do the upgrade before you get on the train if you have time.

Excellent thanks for the responses - glad I can do it and think it best to use the ticket office anyway!

A change of ticket type is always the full difference in price, and a Railcard discount can only be applied where the original ticket is discounted.

As such, the Excess would be £3.30.

Whilst you should be able to obtain the Excess on board, it's advisable to do so prior to boarding where possible to avoid potential issues with revenue staff.

You'd think it was that simple. The Summer Relaxation only applies to the 16 - 25 railcard not the 26 - 30 Railcard

And to the HM Forces Railcard, but not to the Network Railcard. And the minimum fare does not apply to some other types of railcard such as Two Together Railcard at all. So these sorts of sweeping statements can be misleading for sure. As long as the user of a railcard is aware of the specific terms and conditions that apply to that railcard, all is good.

Yeah, my mistake for not adding the others / dodgy wording. I only singled out the difference between the age related railcards due to the situation but you are most correct
