I absolutely disagree - I think a vending machine on an IC service, no matter how short, is an insult. I certainly would feel let down and disrespected if I pay very good money to travel to STP & back and have to get up and put coins in a machine. I think a vending machine would be good for the Norwich-Liverpool operation (or even the 360s), but definitely not Intercity.
I agree that we don’t need silver service for a 2-hour journey to Sheffield; but it’s an IC service at IC fares and a buffet cart is expected as standard and as a principle.
It just frustrates me that some seem to think that EMR Intercity should be treated as some sort of second-rate IC operation just because the journey times are less than on the ECML & WCML. IC is IC and the spec & service level should reflect that. Fortunately, it seems that, from what we have seen of the 810s thus far, they have been built to that standard.
