A few weeks ago, I booked a return ticket for Newcastle to Durham tomorrow, which cost me £5.90.

The train details are as follows .. both journeys on CrossCountry

10:39 Depart NCL, arrive at 10:51 in DHM

15:16 Depart DHM, arrive at 15:28 in NCL

The ticket says I can travel on any off-peak trains, but I don't know which trains these are. I actually picked the times shown, as I have never travelled with CrossCountry before, so thought I would give them a try

4 hours in Durham should be plenty, but if I decided to return on a later train, or even earlier (if i am too sunburnt) ... which trains would be classed as off-peak

thank you !

What ticket, precisely? I can't find one for £5.90, even with a railcard discount.
See https://www.brfares.com/!new?expert=on&orig_name=NEWCASTLE&dest_name=DURHAM&rlc_name=PUBLIC
Any permitted off-peak return £8.80 restriction code G6, "Not valid to depart the origin station shown on the ticket until 09:15". Railcard?
TPE has a cheaper off-peak day return at £8.20 with restriction I1, "not valid before 0930".
There is no such thing as an off-peak train, the train you can catch is determined by your ticket. In either case, the restriction is only for mornings and you can come back on any train. In the case of the TPE fare it has to be a TPE train.

Just beware if you are in Durham around that time, the 15:09 LNER to Newcastle is 5 coaches and when I was in Durham a couple of weeks ago that was very busy. Doesn't help the timetable for Durham to Newcastle on a Sunday is quite compressed with 3 trains within 20-odd minutes then nothing for 40.

Just got back from my trip to Durham (a brilliant day out)

As planned I took the 10:39 CrossCountry train heading for Penzance .. it was packed .. more passengers than seats, at least as far as I could see, on my short trip to Durham. Somebody was in my booked seat, so I just grabbed another seat and would have moved if asked. On my way out there was even a kid sitting on the luggage stand near one of the doors .. just glad I wasn't going to Penzance.

An announcement was made that there would be no trolley service .. just too crowded.

Knowing (thanks to the advice given on this thread) I could take any train back to Newcastle, I just walked to the station and took potluck.

As it was, it was the 16:02 Transpennine Express to Newcastle from York. The train was clean and there was plenty of space .. so it was big thumbs-up from me. Well done TPE

Not quite as good a picture with regards the Tyne & Wear Metro .. serious delays
