Friend of mine a Unite rep, who boarded a VT at Flint, said the 4 coaches booked by Unite were full to overflowing, several paid £15 upgrade in first to get a seat.
Seat reservations went out of the window. There were other comments, but ill leave them.

They paid to upgrade to a class that's only used by rich businessmen and politicians on expenses?

Actually, I work in Parliament, and I CANNOT buy First Class tickets on my expenses. Only standard. It's the same for all of us (including MP's)

It's a case of do as I say, not as I do.....Union officials have there noses in the trough as well you know.

It's not a class war though, is it? Surely if they want to spend just £15 of their hard earned cash on an upgrade, then they are entitled to. In fact, saying that socialists should only travel in standard is highly hypocritical since it just contributes to the class inequalities they are fighting. 1st Class for the middle classes, working classes in Standard etc....

So much for the poor old ordinary person who perhaps bought the ticket well in advance, and so much for the ethos of the comrades. True colours will out every time.

I think it's wrong that you can buy a First Class ticket with FCC yet that still does not guarantee your place in First Class.

As I previously stated, MP's cannot claim for First Class. There was however a case where an MP said they should be able to, as the people in standard 'were a totally different type of people!'

The Railway works on a demand system rather than an allocation system with a designated seat. If you want a seat then you need to reserve one.

if you always want a seat then the Railways will need to move to a ticket in advance with seat reservation scenario - which people always want untill they realise that one day it will be THEM who would be left on the platform. :)

Unless of course they create carriages that are purely for standing in. I can certainly see this happening if Ryanair become a TOC!

You get the level of service you pay for.

I am simply amazed that people continue to slag off the cheap airlines when you can get to and from even the remotest parts of Europe for less than the cost of a Glasgow to London standard class full fare.

And have you ever had the pleasure of flying with Ryanair? :|

People keep mentioning class. Class is not how much money you have or earn. Class is how you live and behave. Bob Crow earns at least £97,000 PA off the backs of "his" members, but the man is as common as muck with no style or grace. Wayne Rooney earns five times that but ditto.
There are people who are - metaphorically - as poor as church mice, who live modestly and quietly and drive around in a second hand Astra. Yet they have a quiet dignity and politeness that belies this.
Never, ever, confuse class with earnings.
I can almost guarantee that the majority of those black clad people smashing up property and spraying "class war" on windows were sons and daughters from (relatively) privileged backgrounds bound by their collective guilt at being so comfortably off yet they try and live out a vicarous life of the proletariat. How they wish that their fathers were railwaymen or council workers instead of doctors and soliciters. How they wish they could have gone to the local comprehensive rather than Marlborough or Reigate Grammar.

Well at least you have worked out what class i belong to!
My Dad when he was alive worked for Islington Council, in a job very few would do. My Mother worked two jobs one as a cleaner and one as a school bus escort. I myself work as a Guard and my wife is a humble cashier for the biggest Supermarket chain in this country

You certainly have a point there! Wayne Rooney spent a night getting busy with prostitutes while his wife lay pregnant in hospital. He has the brains of a lobster yet gets a whacking great salary for kicking a ball between two posts!

If there are any Manchester United fans on here, this is my personal few of many, many footballers, least of all Rooney!

If you think Wayne Rooney is warning 5x what Bob Crow earns pa, then you need to get a reality check. It's more like he ears five times more per week than an average salary in one year, or well over 100 times more than Mr Crow earns each year.

On the subject of marching against the cuts and the "fat cat bankers", why isn't there as much resentment for the likes of Rooney? They earn far too much money; considerably more than they should for kicking a ball around, yet no-one's trashing Old Trafford or demanding that these wages (that make the bankers look poor) be cut.

As OT says, you get what you pay for. On Ryanair, you pay as little as £0.01 for a flight, and you get a service level that broadly matches with that; service where the smile costs an extra €1/£1 per second.

Good point. And remember, there are plenty of these footballers who are caught trying to evade full tax payments by using one devious scheme or another

I suppose a lot of people will take steps to keep as much money as they can instead of letting it go to HMRC (although footballer's probably let their agents/financial advisers do the hard work).

That behaviour is only human, even though I'd like to see the super rich get taxed it must be galling to see the taxman get a huge chunk of your earnings. It's the government's role to close these tax loopholes should it so wish. That being said I know bugger all about macroeconomics so how feasible it would be I don't know.

It does seem odd that the union leaders are paid so much but I suppose, like the bankers' bonuses, they're paid that much because otherwise they'd vanish.

I presume the tax payer has no involvement in paying his salary, so if the fans are willing to pay stupid prices to watch these players kick a ball around, who are we to argue?

What the fans can't see is the longer term damage to the game, as is already being demonstrated time and time again. The same short term views that politicians have pretty much.

I suppose people who buy Nike gear (or any other brand promoted by a footballer) are also aware of where their money goes. It certainly isn't the poor person in a sweatshop on the other side of the world.

Well it's class again dy'see? Rooney's one of us, he a working class boy made good. Who's going to deny the spud faced kid from Liverpule made good with his £5,000,000 a year basic, all the promotional stuff and a nice tax avoidance scheme. Everyone is obsessed with "bankers", no-one is bothered about bloody footballers earing £millions and avoiding tax on it with some neat little leasing themselves to their clubs schemes. There was all hell let loose a couple of weeks ago when it was revealed that some bloke in Barclays got an enormous bonus yet not a whimper about Northern Rock once again whacking 90% mortgages out. Barclays, in debt to the taxpayer for...nothing. Northern Rock..bailed out by the taxpayer when it all went pop. Such short memories that the governments of various hues rely on.

I'd perhaps also like to remind you that Fred Goodwin also comes from a working class background, and was the first member of his family to go to University and worked his way up from nothing, and until 2008, led a very successful career. Rather than buffoons like Rooney (again, no offence intended to buffoons), he's the type of person that we should be looking up to. (At least until 2008 that is).
