I posted similar some time ago but things seem to have changed. The class 755 Greater Anglia trains from Ipswich to Cambridge or Peterborough change traction at Stowmarket station. However I have recently noted these trains with their pans up to the west of Stowmarket. This means that they will have to change traction at Haughley junction...possibly 'on the run'. The previous replies were to the effect that such changeovers are not permitted due to the effect on the OH. I can see that using electric power up the 1:100 (or near enough) Haughley Bank would have cost savings. Anyone offer any updates? Thanks

It is noted there are changeover boards south of Haughley Junction for 755s, whether the Overheads have been upgraded I couldn't say, but it is now permitted to changover on the run

Suppose it all depends what speed they change over to OH power.
Believe rule is 20mph unless it is in a designated area.

Thanks for the replies. I've just been to Haughley Junction and spotted these boards about 100m south of the road crossing. I found more details in 'Keymodelworld' with examples on the GWR. I must admit the raise and lower signs are not exactly obvious in meaning...but I guess they received a lot of deliberation before being chosen. The speed limit across this junction is, i believe 30mph. A new sign has appeared at Bridge Farm, about halfway between Stowmarket and Haughley. I couldnt read it from the road but its appearance corresponds to those in the article as advance warning of power changeover.

The Haughley Jn changeover site has been in use since 7th March, with similar sites at Lakenham (south of Norwich) and Marks Tey installed in January and another site at Ely North Jn being installed in the next month or two.

The previous replies were to the effect that such changeovers are not permitted due to the effect on the OH.
This is generally true for raising a pantograph on the move as this is only permitted in specific areas denoted by the signage mentioned above.

There is no need to upgrade the overheads for this type of changeover.

The changeovers are permitted at up to full line speed of 100mph, however the junction speed at Haughey is only 30mph.

Thanks. That clarifies it. Do you know if there is a protocol for firing up the engines; whether they have to be started in Stowmarket, just in case there is a starting problem, then run on idle until Haughley Junction.

Michael Portillio's latest "Great Railway Journeys" feature the 755s and all those seen appear to be running on diesel. Apart from Ipswich - Stowmarket - Haughley Jn, over which other sections of route do these trains run off the OHLE? Cambridge to Ely must be another.

This extends out to Stansted Airport (to Ely) with the mention of the changeover site being installed at Ely North Junction as quoted:

755s operate on electric for the full journey Norwich to London too.
