508111 is not guaranteed to be gifted. I rather not see it preserved. If any get preserved it will be a Class 507 likely 001.

I know they are being restored, but I mean 502 paintwork was especially rusty when it was at MoD Kineton.

Also which 508 will be next?
A 508 has a lot more history than 507. They started off as four cars, worked in SWT land, gifted a car to 455s, and then separate ones - but same class - worked for Silverlink and SE.

I disagree as the first unit to be introduced was 507001 and 02, also 001 has been been overhauled. Honestly, I seriously doubt that 508111 is actually going to be preserved, it more likely 507s as they are to be last of Merseyrail PEPs to go. Just my opinion:smile:

From a local perspective, arguably a 507 has more historical value. These have spent their entire lives on Merseyside and were new for this railway, will have a longer career than the 508s and are said to be in better condition overall.

It would be fabulous to see any of them saved, even a single carriage or failing that a cut cab section and I would put my hand in my pocket to make it happen. There are however a few reasons to go for 507001: first delivered and in traffic, carried VIPs including Queen Elizabeth II on the opening special, likely to be one of the last overhauled and kept until the end barring a 507019-style disaster.

Going for 508111 would be a fool's errand, because it's so tatty that you'd have to re-apply the wrap, an expensive undertaking. I don't understand the desire to preserve it only because it happens to have a Beatles-themed wrap anyway. Having worn that wrap since 2011, I also doubt its bodywork is in great condition.

There is a video on youtube somewhere of the day the vip's were travelling on the line, I believe both 507001 & 002 were the units involved for that inaugural run.

Might I ask how 104/120/127/136 fare? (508s)
I'm asking for selfish reasons, as they're the remaining operational 508s I haven't been on and it'd be quite nice to see if they're around when I return to the UK in late June.

I've also not had 507014/018/026/030, but it appears 508s are sooner to be dumped.

I would put my money on either 508127 or 508138.
Edit: I didn't see this :( I doubt 127 will last until June then.

I would make 508127 a priority as it is low on mileage now as the 508 longest without overhaul, but I doubt 120 or 136 are in any imminent danger barring an accident as they have been overhauled within the last year or so. 508104 was last overhauled around two years ago so has plenty of mileage left in theory but sooner or later 508s will start to succumb well before reaching their limit.

All those 507s should be safe for the time being, but should one suffer a mishap like 507019, it would likely spell the end. Of your four, 507026 is the longest since overhaul (early 2018) and 507018 the most recent.

Thanks. I'm abroad until late June, so I've probably missed 127 then. I've already missed a couple of the very first to be scrapped, so I was never going to clear them anyway mind, just nice to have as many as possible down isn't it.

No problem. You never know with 127 as well: Merseyrail can't spare many more 508s without more capacity cuts and things are very far from smooth on the 777 front at present.

@MR-507508 reported 507019 had an incident in early February. Esteemed reports elsewhere claim it hit debris on the line which caused damage below the solebar. It was at Kirkdale for a good few weeks after the incident.
