That’s basically pre-2014 levels… I don’t like it at all.

I don’t think 4tph will be sufficient enough long term, the Ayr services today are already pretty busy on a Saturday as are the Largs trains.

Slowing down the Largs trains won’t be popular in the slightest.

Surely by May, ScotRail will have enough resources to run the fast services from Ayr again? I don’t know why they have to alter it.
They’re altering it to save money. In fairness, this is one cut back I’d understand. Not sure there’s any requirement for four trains per hour to Ayr off peak.

If there was to be a compromise, I’d suggest diverting the XX45 Largs stopper to Ayr, and introducing an XX43 Largs semi fast as per the other Ayr services. But the old timetable is definitely an over provision now.

I’m aware of this, I literally stated in my post that I was aware things have changed since covid

My point was, 2tph on a Sunday in 2023 is completely unacceptable
The way you phrased your post it made it sound like you were expecting 6tph on a Sunday which is clearly never going to happen.

Are WMT capable of running a reliable 2tph on a Sunday at present?
I have a question

During the summer months, does TfW increase the frequency of the Milford Haven trains to hourly? And are there any changes confirmed on that line?

Reason why I ask is because I'm thinking of doing some Pembrokeshire day trips (from Oxford) but the problem is that I won't really be able to visit some places as a result of the reduced frequency of some train lines there.
Milford Haven is 2 hourly year round with no plans for improvement. The only major changes West of Carmarthen expected are on the Fishguard branch, with it going to a consistent 2 hourly all day service (running in the alternate hours to the Milford services).

I was merely stating what had been touted before and what we currently have now. Nowhere did I say I was expecting 6tph on a Sunday

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to expect an improved Sunday timetable

Passenger loadings at the present don’t seem to warrant 4 trains an hour on a Sunday. With the dft controlling the budget the days of TOC’s experiment with extra trains for a timetable period are sadly long gone. Add to that at the moment the only train crew on West Mids with committed Sundays are conductors that have started within the last few years.

It might be an overprovision having 4tph to Ayr/Gourock, but the lack of atleast hourly Gourock semi-fasts is shameful. There used to be 4tph to Gourock pre-covid, now cut down completely to 2tph all stoppers. The Ayr services slightly better as they're now semi-fast but still only 2tph.

I think 3tph (one semi-fast) on both routes would be just right, especially on Saturdays.

Also certain services are still hourly in the evenings and lack of a Cathcart Circle during most of the day. Its horrible and is only going to drive passengers away especially from the west side of the circle.

The Shotts fast services also look like they aren't coming back till another TT change which is a disappointment because I thought they were.

The services I use don’t appear to agree with this sentiment, I’d argue that they warrant more than 2tph between Birmingham and Stourbridge, and they definitely don’t warrant only 1tph to Kidderminster

I’m guessing it would depend on what time you are travelling. Worked last Sunday & none of the trains i worked through the day were full enough to warrant an increase in service at present. West Mids authority want increased services or at least did. Can’t see it happening in the current financial climate, especially with weekday services not going back to pre Covid levels. Fewer but busier trains seem to be the preferred dft model.

Fantastic. No doubt West Midlands Railway will be patting themselves on the back when the new May timetable comes around, ignoring its glaring weaknesses

Thank god for Smethwick Galton Bridge Lower Level

You don’t seem to get the point. It’s not up to the TOC’s now if they want to run extra services. Everything has to be agreed by the dft. They hold the purse strings & say what companies can & can't run. Northern are facing massive service cuts & other TOC’s will be as well i suspect. West Mids may suffer the same or could be lucky & escape the cuts. Another potential issue with running a full 7 day timetable is unit availability. Not all maintenance can be carried out at night. Hence having a reduced Sunday service allows for additional maintenance especially on the diesel fleet. The other issue will be traincrew at present.

No, I get the point very well

I’m aware it’s not under the TOCs control, I was talking about how the timetable change is going to be marketed

Ah ok! Marketing is way beyond my pay scale. We are lucky in the west mids that the travel authority or what ever it’s called are very pro rail. Hopefully when things settle we may well see improvements.

True, but i’m not entirely sure if both trains from the Largs/Ardrossan direction need to serve Howwood or Lochwinnoch. Nobody really seems to get on at those stops.

I’d agree with sending the Largs service to be semi-fast (and not call at Lochwinnoch/Howwood as per the old timetable)

Although, keeping 1tph to Ayr and 1tph to Largs after 8:30pm is something I don’t agree with.

Really it should be 2tph Ayr and 1tph Largs, especially on a Friday/Saturday

And for what could be the first time ever, Hillington West, Hillington East and Cardonald gain calls on a morning Ayr-Glasgow service.

Also Hillington West/East on this evening Glasgow-Ayr service

The 0642 ex Largs used to do Hillington West only, but that service no longer runs come May (leaves at 07:09 instead and runs all stops)

That doesn't seem to stop 90% of TOCs from doing it in 1 or 2 mins, and accepting that the consequences are not that serious (in the grand scheme of things) if someone does get missed.

I think it's clear who the outlier is here.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

I wouldn't expect it to take 20 minutes, that's for sure!
Can easily take that long, a 10 car voyager arriving at say Newcastle that terminates and is booked to depart back over KEB would need driver to walk full length of train on platform to enter what will be leading cab, then walk back through the train closing exterior doors and checking toilets, then locking exterior doors from what will be the rear cab on departing for depot, then recheck the whole interior again in case someone boarded before doors were locked. It is a serious incident if someone is carried to the depot as they could egress from the train with movements being made on adjacent lines. So it can take a while

Why does the driver have to do it?

We do it as it is part of our t&c’s from a few years back as XC don’t have platform staff at many stations so meant didn’t have to pay other companies to check our trains and driver is responsible if SCU (self check unit) showing on diagram if anyone carried over

It's a bit of an odd one, anywhere else the guard or platform staff would do it with the driver. You can even see for example LNER dispatch staff locking up GTR trains at Peterborough.

The consequences of potentially locking someone in the depot are quite serious though, contrary to @Watershed 's assertion, if they panic, pull an egress and start wandering around anything could happen.

We are supposed to have platform staff watching train while we are walking through it as it is not on us to get anyone off who wants to stay on thinking it’s their train home after a night on the drink. They then dispatch us normally using a RA indicator.

This is only a 4 car at most 170 and more likely 2 or 3.

Leaving aside this long allowance it doesn't explain why having taken it out of service in Nottingham they don't just shunt into the siding XC regularly use just North East of the station and then bring it back out to form the next service rather than driving it ECS to the depot passing one being brought back the other way.

Actually looking again the shunt moves are now in and the long ECS are marked runs as required so maybe things aren't as mad as they first appeared and the Tyseley runs won't normally be used.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but EMR are trimming the intercity timetable down slightly, as the following will be removed from May

04:20 Derby to St Pancras
09:45 St Pancras to Melton (will terminate Corby)
14:35 Melton to St Pancras (will start from Corby)
20:34 St Pancras to Lincoln (will terminate at Notts)
00:15 St Pancras to Derby

Seems a very common theme - trimming round the edges including first and lasts.

Presumably the former Melton turns will also go over to 360s, so saving a 222 diagram that will help free the 180s to go off lease.

On the other hand there are a couple of additional service from Derby to Sheffield (calling at Chesterfield) on Sunday mornings:
1F98 0732 Derby Sheffield - https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C00541/2023-05-28/detailed
1F99 0828 Derby Sheffield - https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C00542/2023-05-28/detailed

These services, which are converted from empty workings, are very useful and provide some earlier journey opportunities to destinations in Scotland, the North East, Yorkshire and also anywhere you can get to via Manchester.

12 car slam door trains were always good fun. I saw a bloke at Shoeburyness leg it onto a 12 car 302, as it departed to the sidings! In a book written by a driver, he talks about a lady that ended up on his 12 car ECS from London Bridge to, I think, Streatham Hill. Passcom pulled somewhere around Sydenham. Only the front coach was on the platform; inevitably the lady was in the 12th coach.

Probably useful for an early start or an International service this might attract complaints

09:45 St Pancras to Melton (will terminate Corby)
14:35 Melton to St Pancras (will start from Corby)
Not sure these have much value beyond Corby.

20:34 St Pancras to Lincoln (will terminate at Notts)
Has a later train departing at 22:37 from Nottingham - as long it waits at Nottingham with 1D94 is late.

00:15 St Pancras to Derby
Again useful for a late night or coming home from an International service - useful for leisure passengers whom the DfT seem to want to discourage.

Not worth increasing the frequency on the Milford line as the stations on that section aren't really the Pembrokeshire holiday destinations, those are on the Pembroke Dock branch in particular and also to some extent Fishguard.

The former and latter are big losses in my view. The MML has long enjoyed a much better service in terms of first and last trains than the WCML and many other lines. Obviously these individual trains may be lightly loaded at times, but they provide a very useful service for those who need it. Unfortunately with the DfT in cost-cutting mode, I suppose this kind of loss is to be expected :|

It’s the 0357 ex Derby that’s going, but the 0412 is still there. That arrives 0636, which is rather earlier than any Avanti or LNER arrival into London from the Midlands / North.

on the down, it’s only really Leicester and Derby passengers that lose out - Stations from Bedford southwards still have the TL services, and Wellingboro’ / Kettering have a Corby at 2354.

I don’t have the passenger numbers to hand, but IIRC they were very lightly loaded most of the time, and I imagine that pretty much everyone who used them will just switch to the slightly later / earlier train as appropriate. Revenue loss will be peanuts.
