507s seem to be allowed to survive longer.

Looking rather battered, 508123 is today stabled at Kirkdale depot in the spot formerly occupied by 507006 after she had her accident.

I've just been told that 508123 finishes this weekend. If anybody is able to confirm?

Would I not be correct in saying that I am sure it was possibly mentioned that as more of the 777s were delivered that it would release more 507 & 508 units to allow more 6 coach workings to take place.

I am not sure if it was on this thread or on the 777 thread but I am quite sure I read it on 1 of the threads.

If I am incorrect its no problem.

I think this was more a theory rather than an official plan. I don’t think Merseyrail have intimated that this is intended (would be nice to be proved wrong on this!).

One presumes stabling space would also be an issue, as to date only a handful of old trains have gone, so there would come a point where for every 777 on the network a 507/508 has to go. No idea how close they are to that point though.

There is now increased usage of sidings at Southport to store stock. There is room for several more sets if desired.

Nothing on RTT yet but seems 508123 will be making it's final trip on Sunday evening, presumably to Newport....report from the Mersey Railways FB group.

507004 has been sat in the sidings since Monday which is interesting and looks totally shut down at the moment
I was on the footbridge across the sidings earlier today. 507032 looks like it hasn’t moved in two weeks either, since I was last there. With the Sunday possession, all of the sidings are fully occupied.

Is it done the same way the 777 have come in with ballast flatbeds for and after? It seams like a complicated way to get rid of dead stock?

Some ROG locos are fitted with Tightlock couplers so can control the unit brakes so no need for translator vehicles or wagons to provide brake force.

Well, I also think they care less about the unit, like wearing out brake pads. Scrap is scrap at the end of the day, it's not a brand new unit that needs care and attention.

Why are 508s getting withdrawn faster than 507s.
Because they're in worse condition. If i remember rightly, the 508s are suffering with more corrosion issues than the 507s. 508s should go first, 507006 was the exception as it was written off in the Kirkby collision.

Are 6 car Class 507s still going to be retained on Southport Line?

apparently 14 507s retained for about 2 years? 2025-ish so?

This was the original plan a few years ago, and we should really have been at the stage now where the 508s and most 507s are gone, near enough all 777 operation except no 8 cars because the works mentioned in todays posts on the 777 thread mention. Obviously covid and industrial issues regarding DOO slowed things down.

Now we're at a point were the works are in progress, so by the time the 777s are fully rolled out I would imagine the network will be ready, so probably no need to retain extra 507s for peak 6 cars. If they do, I can't imagine it would be for very long.

Things are also different now because a lot of the 508s which should have gone a couple of years ago having ran out of overhaul miles (120, 108, 103, 104 to name a few) have been overhauled since to keep the service running, so these which were at the front of the scrap queue are now further back.

507s are still being overhauled as far as I know, 507001 was done a few weeks ago.
