I'm an atheist but I did find the poppy burning gravely insulting. Deportation? Nah. Life in prison? Probably.

Really? I found what they did offensive but you're suggesting a sentence far in excess of what someone would get for a serious assault?

It is the greatest sign of disrespect to our war dead possible, they are utter filth who frankly do not haver the right to liberty (NB - I would say this of any man who burnt a poppy or did equivelant, don't play the race card). Don't worry, murderers, rapists etc would get the same.

Perhaps, but if you're going to start jailing people for disrespect you're going to be very busy.

I'll make time. It makes me sick when I see people disrespecting our war dead in any way, but in this way it was vulgar.

Lord give me strength, how many times have I heard this effing argument. The fact of the matter is that you can go anywere, observe any religon you want, and you will always get a small pocket of idiots. For the people that think cristianity is entirely peaceful, i'll destroy that argument easily, The Crusades, where British Christians when off to the middle east and started killing everything that moved especially muslims, and has evryone forgotten that the IRA were catholic. Also Islam has its wallys (my best mate was killed by them) but they only account for a small portion of the overall muslim population. I've been to the Middle East and have generally found the locals to be nice people. this argument seems to have turned into overt racism from some quaters (naming no names three nine zero come in somewhere) something which i dispise with a passion, and im shocked to see that far from realising this and locking the thread up and throwing away the key, a mod is actively taking part in a wholly misguided and totally ill-informed disscussion. I'm sorry if my comments on this matter offend people, but after all thankfully we live in a free country where i'm allowed to say what I like, and I speak as i find and what i find stinks to high hell.

Islam is a religion, not a race. So I have said nothing racist.

And that 'moderator', Yorkie, has also sent me a completely uncalled for private message suggesting that I have autism simply because I have a different opinion to him. Mod professionalism ftw.

I'm not continuing this discussion and I won't be posting on these forums again, you all seem to be liberal types who are impossible to debate with because you refuse to acknowledge any opinion which is slightly 'right wing'.

Or are you just embarrassed that no one else shares your opinion?

I have acknowledged your opinion, and think it misguided, so shall we continue with the debate? Or are you admitting defeat?

I would suggest you reconsider that, I would consider myself to Centre-Right if not full blown Right to be honest.

Aside from ainsworth74, there are quite a few right-of-centre people on here. To be honest I wouldn't quit over something as pointless as that - if you found yorkie's PM offensive let a member of staff know.

People have said in the past that they like the fact that the forum staff spend more time posting in railway discussions than moderating. Unfortunately you're in a minority and would clearly rather we didn't share our knowledge or opinions.

I consider myself right wing; indeed I am a paid-up member of the Conservative party, but I don't believe in hate of religions which I know little about.

Don't know why religion came into this thread - the appalling behaviour of these idiots has nothing to do with religion. The 'punishment' handed out is a joke. End of.

What was said earlier about the stoning to death of women, rape and homosexuals, is it a religious thing, cultural, abit of both or one in the same?

I'd like to think that the very people who died for Britain (and other countries that also had people who died) did so in order to give those idiots the right to do what they did.

We aren't expected to like it, but we live in a society where people can have differences of opinion.

Personally, I hate religion. They all abuse their religions for more power, and to look down on others... which to me is exactly what all religions were about in the old days. I'm always amazed that in modern times, anyone can still believe them.

That's not to say I don't agree that we should all abide by the generally sensible rules laid down, which are generally speaking the same from one religion to others.

What I hate is that people can do such bad things in the name of religion because they can be led to believe that they can be forgiven, either in this life or the next. If it was clear that you can't do whatever you want - we might live in a better and safer world.

Finally, I am generalising here - I know - and most people may have faith but don't take religion that seriously or to extremes. They're just happy to 'belong' and abide by the rules, with faith that they're going to a better place when they die. Who am I to say they're wrong? But they're not the ones that cause the problems (sadly, they're often the ones who are taken advantage of though).

I asked if you did, I did not "suggest", because as I already explained to you, if you had said yes I would have taken this into account when responding. I have not acted as a moderator in this thread, by the way.

Indeed as I have told Patrick if anyone has posted anything offensive he needs to use the 'Report' button.

I do not find Patrick's posts offensive but I do find them alarming, inaccurate and need to be challenged, and demonstrating a lack of tolerance that I find most concerning.

Agree totally. There was no need for it, and now the person who did that has had many people challenge his views and ask him some questions that he is unable to answer, perhaps he regrets making such extreme claims. Someone who claims to be the number one Pendo fan and number one Voyager hater, while entitled to those views, does come across to me as someone who, for whatever reason, is a bit extreme. Hopefully one day he will have an open mind and realise things are not always black or white.

"Please mind the gap when alighting the train".
"We are now approaching our final destination".
"Exit here for Buckingham Palace".

Now they're disgraceful sentences!

If only people would get as angry about the way our language - the language of Shakespeare and Keats - is being mangled rather than a few religious nutters of various demoninations..........................

People slate extracts from both the bible and the Qu'ran as being inappropriate when taken out of context, well how about we take the religion/ethnicity of the offender out of the context (surely an 'unprejudiced hearing') and just take into consideration that he picked the most inappropriate two minutes of the YEAR to burn poppies and chant obscenities about British soldiers! Regardless of his background, this is still an arrestable offence albeit not a major one, hence the laughable 'sentence'. Putting it back into context again, and the crime seems many orders of magnitude worse.

The judge himself said it was a "calculated and deliberate insult"; I would call the offender a lying Count if he claimed to be doing anything other than insensitively desecrate the memory of fallen British soldiers. As Dave (and Nick of course) has recently said, multiculturalism has not worked out as planned, and rather than a truly integrated society, there are now pockets of different cultures co-existing with little integration.

Some of that could be down to xenophobia, but let's not kid ourselves that some communities are very tightly knit and private, and seldom welcome outsiders within their order (quite how channel 4 always gets a look in mystifies me). This hasn't helped their integration cause any. Such distancing won't allow either side to fully understand each other's cultural beliefs and taboos, or open them up to be the genuine friendly people we'd happily chat to over the garden fence.

Just my opinion and interpretation of it all, however at the end of the day I'd be sickened and angry if I was at the scene of this incident, and well done to the remembrance mourners for not sinking to this level with violent retaliation.

"Please mind the gap when alighting the train".
"We are now approaching our final destination".
"Exit here for Buckingham Palace".

when the guard/driver doesn't set up the anouncement system properly, occasionally on Scotrail services you get the odd "this is the scotrail service for calling at stations via and" always gets a chuckle!

I'm with ralphchadkirk and yorkie here, and that's something I'd never thought I'd write LOL.

Interesting that so many misunderstand the poppy as being for just the British and just for the world wars. They support all troops from those wars and our current and future serving armed personnel. The irony in someone mentioning the British Empire is quite hilarious. Yep, no blood spilled over us stealing land, crops, produce and enslaving great swathes of the general populous to serve the British there.

People would do well to remember just how many civilians have been killed by forces in Iraq and Afghanistan - we have lost troops, but that is a risk of the job they do. Tens of thousands of families, have been killed by offensive (offensive as in not defensive, not as in insulting) allied actions.

Our press and government are quite happy to point at nations such as North Korea and mock the propaganda/state control of media. Do you really think we're always given the full picture? Haha, it's the old 'need to know' mentality we operate under.

The men burning the poppies were trying to be offensive, like 4th formers swearing in class. A juvenile approach to life like that deserves a piddling sentence, which they got. If they had got anything worse, they would have achieved what they wanted, publicity and a sort of martyrdom. I can't see them hanging round with their mates bragging how they stood up to the infidel and got....a small fine.

The poppy represents all of the British people who have died fighting in wars. Burning that symbol could be viewed as being racist against the British. MAC are a very racist group, theres no point denying that. They've said in the past that they view non-muslims as inferior and it is okay to kill them.

It's these stories (well, not this one specifically but similar ones) that always seem to bring out the racism or xenophobia in people too.

Like the (false) stories about pubs not being able to fly the England flag during football tournaments as they've been told it will offend people. It's a lie, but within seconds of the stories circulating the web gets all the people saying 'If they don't like it, they can **** off home' and 'Let's teach them a lesson and ALL fly our England flags and wave them in their face.

Music to the ears of the BNP and EDL, who are probably behind the stories in the first place.

In my mind, someone is free to do what they want to protest or make a statement - and it's my right to ignore them and just tell them to **** off. It's a free country and I'd like it to stay that way. That doesn't mean we're supporting terrorism, or any other criminal act.

For the above story, it's a public order issue and should be dealt with as such. End of story. Move on, nothing to see here. Why give them any publicity over something trivial?

My thoughts toom when I saw this and the mention of British indigenous I thought it shows how far the BNP and EDL nonsense has spread.

Agreed, the British are no more a "race" than the Americans. If asked what race I am, I tend to say Anglo-Celtic (just about accurate, I'm part Irish). Nations are essentially artificial constructs dependent on treaties and how aggressive certain monarchs were. Look at Belgium and Yugoslavia as definitions of nations.

What offends me is the way that people with racist agendas have effectively misappropriated the flag, so such an extent that certain people do find it offensive. I usually don't fly the thing, but if I wanted to (for a Test match or the jubilee or whatever) I'd risk being accused of being an extremist, which really annoys me. The flag belongs to the whole nation (artificial construct or not). I, part Irish, have just as much right to fly it as anyone else, so the extremists should give it back.
