To ensure a set finished in Holyhead, 67013 and HD05 went onto the Crewe-Chester shuttle for a couple of hours before picking up w96 in Chester so HD04 should be ready for w91 in the morning and hd05 Will now be in Holyhead for v91.
Noted HD05 at Llandudno Jn last night, arrived early and left RT.

All being well HD04 will be out on 17:14 Holyhead, HD06 if its exam is finished will go out on 16:49 Manchester.

HD02 should begin testing tomorrow but HD07 is confined to Canton with bogie issues.

The 17:14 Cardiff to Holyhead is 2x 153s. I looked earlier on.

Heavy delays on trains that seem to run with Mk4 sets today as all days when they are actually running. Do we know the cause of those?
Have some sets come back from SDO fitting? A quick check on RTT seems to show that there are more out than the last couple of days.
Thanks.

It's not always the MKIVs themselves causing delays. As an example yesterday the afternoon trip to Manchester was 30 minutes late and got turned around at Wilmslow - but this was purely due to delays coming off Canton owing to an operational incident with another TOCs service.

On both occasions I've worked it since the introduction into Manchester services I've been able to keep to time ok - it's been external factors that have caused delays. Dwell times can be a struggle but that'll come down as the guards get more familiar with it - for nearly all guards concerned it's the first time they've ever had to use SDO.

Lots of catching up late services between Manchester and Crewe coupled with unfamiliar crews, which will clearly increase over time.
Congestion going on and off Canton is proving a major achilles heel at the moment. The sets can and have kept time but delays do seem to easily spiral at the moment.

There appear to be 3 Mk4s out today.
RTT doesn't give a set number when there is a graphic at the top showing Mk4 train formation (but not identity).
It's noticeable that the Holyhead services perform better than the Manchesters, even when they are the same set, swapped at Cardiff!
Late arrival at Cardiff seems to impede the turnround there, and the turnrounds at the northern end are too short to make up any time for the return trip.
So passengers for today's 1V46 1430 Manchester-Cardiff are in for a sizeable delay unless the set is turned short, as the northbound 1W57 is 33 late at Shrewsbury.
There's a hint of skipped stops in the Marches, as it was 44 down at Newport.
(Armchair control via RTT is easy, though ;)).

Edit: 1W57 turned at Wilmslow 36 down. 1V46 17 late into Cardiff. 1W65 ran close to time Cardiff to Manchester, so a better finish to the day.

Is there any reason the sets can't reverse in the station at Cardiff, like a unit can?
I thought the new signalling allowed that kind of working.

With the layout of Cardiff being what it is, it was one of my worries that splitting the Manchester-West Wales would increase the number of ECS in Caerdydd for a station not designed for it. Every train that needs to terminate from the East and that then has to go back East will have to cross the Eastbound mainline (and sometimes westbound) and create conflicts.

Or just reverse in the west side sidings ?

Well I finally got my chance to do some MK4 moves today! I ended up on the very late running 1156 from Hereford with 82201+67015. Non-stop Hereford to Shrewsbury and on an ex-GC set, no complaints there! First time on such a set, and it was very nice. First Class looked nice, but the stench of meat in that coach made me very glad I wasn't using it!

As I type, I'm on another ex-GC set with 67013+82200 on the 1925 from Shrewsbury. I really like this interior, it's so much nicer than the ex-LNER interior!

What have I been up to today that warranted a lengthy trip between TfW trains? Well, there's a trip report coming soon which will explain all!

Many thanks for posting the shots @Techniquest, hoping to get to sample the 67/Mk4 sets later this year myself. Is the 1st class accommodation located next to the DVT or is it sandwiched between standard vehicles?

Looks to be next to the DVT, in the photos the gold doors for the refurbished GC style first class carriage is between the DVT and catering/buffet carriage.

Not sure whether the ex-LNERs have been reformed the same. Was the accessible standard carriage being moved into the middle of all sets?

First Class was next to the DVT with the cafe-bar next to that and 2 Standard Class coaches after that. I have to confess I didn't note the formation on the 1909 from Shrewsbury to Holyhead, which was 67017, which was an ex-LNER set.

It looks nice, no question of that, I suspect I'd want to do First Class on them only on journeys without meals being served. I'm sure for most people the smell of meat is nice, not for me!

That was the busiest food service so far on a Manchester .
A lot of comments about how the food needs to be promoted and people glad it’s on board .

They're all exactly the same with First next to the DVT then the buffer then Standard with disabled space then Standard then the loco.

The 0627 Piccadilly - Cardiff is 2 153s today...

The set for that has instead been used on 0419 Crewe to Cardiff to cycle sets and enable HD06 to come back in tomorrow and leave a spare set at Crewe.

Booked Mk4 trains today are:
0419 Crewe to Cardiff
0533 Holyhead to Cardiff
0648 Cardiff to Holyhead
0849 Cardiff to Manchester
1052 Cardiff to Manchester
1133 Holyhead to Cardiff
1230 Manchester to Cardiff
1430 Manchester to Cardiff
1649 Cardiff to Manchester
1714 Cardiff to Holyhead
1855 Cardiff to Manchester
2030 Manchester to Crewe

Should be back to the normal 3 diagrams tomorrow
