There isn't a vast amount of freight using it unless diverted as it's only natural route is on to the WCML. You dont start mixing freight, the Cross City and New St unless you have to.

A few Sundays ago was very interesting, even more so when a XC came down the line, on route to Birmingham New Street as a 323 was terminating at Lichfield on platform 2. The 323 had to shunt into the electric only sidings to let the XC through. The driver of the London Midland was not impressed and at first no one knew what to do or who should move.

I have a copy of the freight/usage timetable for Alrewas (Wychnor to WCML Cord), and like the others have said it is a very lightly used line. Empty Voyager stock get transferred from bombardier (Barton) to Birmingham New Street, Crewe and other locations. Most nights an empty stock comes through Lich City at around 21.56 on route to New Street.

The 1925 Newcastle-New St is booked via Lichfield Mon-Fri. Think the ECS that SSR refers to is a 170.

Why would 323s need to be transferred onto the WCML?

Realistically, there probably isn't but it was just something I thought as a way of transferring stock if needs be between the WCML and X-City line Not neccessarily just 323's), but as its single track, it would make it fairly difficult realistically.

True. I think it'd be fair to say you don't mix anything with New St unless its really neccessary

I don't know why (and it's probably not such a great thought) but all I can think of is someone like Jeremy Clarkson standing on the platform shrugging his shoulders and going "there's a spare line there *pointing at platform 1*...he can go round...why should I move"

So thats why I kept getting woken up on Sundays!

There is a footpath across the line at Alrewas and all trains sound their horns on the approach - I thought there was a lot more train noise recently!

The Lichfield Trent Valley to Wychnor Junction also serves trains accessing the WCML at Trent Valley via a chord off the up slow, and regularly see testing trains and others accessing the Bombardier works at Barton.
