Looked pretty complete when I passed through the other day, why on earth is it taking so long....
We’ve been wondering that for years…

It’s rather amazing watching the difference between England Vs Scotland - Green Park Vs Dalcross. Granted, Dalcross has the advantage of an 11 day possession to lay and connect the loop in, but this will be a station built and opened in what, a year?

Reading Council have issued a press release stating:
A detailed commissioning and safety validation process has now commenced and must be completed and approved by the Office of Rail and Road before the station can welcome its first trains and serve passengers.

The next key milestone of this major project will come in January 2023, when the Application to Enter into Service is submitted to the Office of Road and Rail (ORR).

Below is a screenshot showing the station in relation to Green Park itself, the Select Car Leasing Stadium (the former 'Madstad') and the M4.

Still wondering about what looks like two rows of parallel tactiles on the platforms.

Is that going to be a new national standard, with every other station altered? Or is it a one off special case?

I believe it’s a secondary means of escape from the north end of the platform, they‘ve certainly covered all the bases at vast expense.
Seems a bit daft having a walkway directly behind the platform when instead you could just link the emergency escape to the existing platform. It's not exactly very wider for a full scale evacuation.

The escape route is also linked directly to the platform at the south end. I’m pretty sure they’ve gone for the most expensive interpretation of group standards possible.

I hadn't realised how well built that bridge was too. When there's plenty of other stations around with either uncovered or "half" * covered footbridges, they seem to have gone for the most robust design going!

*I say half covered footbridges - places like Winchester utilises big glass panels from floor to almost ceiling with inch wide gaps in-between each panel. This looks to be fully insulated / built etc!

I suppose it’s too early to say but has anyone heard of the proposed match day services? As a season ticket holder at the Mad Stad it would make my journey from Burnham much easier. Imagine it would have to be Turbo shuttles if anything and there probably aren’t enough units based at Reading to provide that.

I don’t think the track layout or signalling allows for short workings, it can only be strengthening of existing services.

I hope it's not another Coventry Arena station scenario, where the station has to close during matchdays because the pokey train service would get dangerously overcrowded!

also since its so far from the stadium i reckon the bus from the station will still be the better option - I doubt it'll get any better than the half hourly service too

Can’t help but think that it seems a bit odd that they installed both canopies and a covered footbridge, but then left a section with no cover at all between them on the platform with the buildings.

Unfortunately not, I think the only Bi-Di section on the line is at the Basingstoke end. There certainly isn’t any crossovers between Reading West and Chineham / Daneshill (Basingstoke).

If it’s any consolation, the only matches played in there now is Reading FC. London Irish RFC moved down to Brentford a few seasons back, ironically partnering with a football club there built next to Kew Bridge station.

Why?

The petty bureaucrats, nit pickers and bean counters will literally be tripping over each other trying to show off at finding as much non-compliance as possible, and new excuses to waste huge sums of money.

So the fun begins:

Ratio of disabled parking spaces below prescribed value.

Functional illuminance is not proven in one corner of the car park during periods of reduced lunar irradiance.

Height of the bobbles on the tactile paving does not consistently attain the minimum threshold value.

Let's hope this isn't a Worcestershire Parkway mark 2.

And the politicians who employ them and have got funding for the station will be making sure the station opens as soon as possible now so they can have their photo op.

Just in time for the local elections in May 2023 perhaps?

At a guess, in time for the December 22 Timetable change. AIUI the paths are in the WTT with the stop, it's just Unadvertised at the moment. It's a very simple data exercise to change that code. Possible timescale could be soft (unpublicised) opening the Saturday before the timetable change and then balloons on Monday morning.

The calls have been in the WTT since 2020 (if not before) when it changed from 2 trains going back & forth to 3 trains with longer turnarounds.

Agreed though, it will probably have a soft opening before the bigwigs come on the Monday (can't ask them to work a weekend now ;)) to get the photos of them smiling with a novelty pair of scissors

If only it were true.

Experience shows these forensic inspections can delay the ribbon cutting for months and leave the taxpayer with a large bill.

Safe and legal is one thing, but microscopic technical infringements are another.

Whatever last minute hitches are still to occur, the overall time taken has already been significantly longer than some other new stations. Obviously they’re all different in detail, but this just seems to have been a very long time.

Back before electrification to Newbury, Saturday services on the Reading-Basingstoke shuttle were regularly reduced to hourly as one unit was sacrificed to provide extra capacity for racegoers going to Newbury Racecourse. But as that service is now electric, there's little possibility of the favour being returned for football supporters going to Green Park station. I doubt there's a free path on the line that would allow extra actual services. The dedicated platform 5 at Basingstoke is probably only long enough for 5 cars and all the units now on the line seem to be 3-car, so making extending the train lengths unlikely, unless they can switch to a longer platform, like 1 or 4.

The promoting/funding council has declared that they are deliberately being cautious. They are not railway construction experts and do not have vast experience on which to draw. Yes, they have guidance by experts but ultimately it's for them to decide whether to do X or Y.

I can imagine Reading Buses will be sneakily pleased with this situation as they can keep their shuttle bus contract with the club!

I've visited the Station today as there is a Footpath next to the Station leading to a office building also the Dot Matrix Boards work and the Announcements work also, unfortunately I started my video just as the announcements had ended when I heard the Voyagers approaching but from the Start of the announcements to the time of the train is about 5 - 10 seconds depending on speed

How big is the development planned to be around the station? Is it just what is being built now or are there future phases? Would be a pretty good commute into london given the distance.

It's also an easy 10-15 mins drive from Shinfield/Three Mile Cross/Swallowfield, where many more thousands of houses have been built, maybe 7/8k over the last few years.

Plenty of properties already completed and more going up. Also an existing large office area leading up towards the Stadium.
