(And as a final note... when you compare photos of Grayrigg to Ladbroke Grove and Ufton Nervet, comfort doesn't even come into it - the Pendolino design wins hands down.)

Not a fair comparison - Ladbrooke Grove was a head on impact at considerable speed; Ufton Nervet was an impact with a vehicle, Grayrigg was a straightforward derailment.

I have to point out that the Mk3 design stood up extremely well at Colwich, which was a head on at high speed where both trains were at speed.

worked with someone who was on the grayrig pendo and he said although it was scary it was fantastic as even when rolling on its side he felt safe and that he had a good chance of getting out and he was amazed at how well the unit coped. We all have a good moan at modern units but as to crashworthyness We've never had better!

The pendo just looks like it has been put together cheaply inside. The plastics look tacky (its got a spaceship interior in the vestibule, and not in a good way).
They are nothing compared to a Mk3 in terms of space and comfort. A pendo i would never travel long distance in, if sitting in standard. Its very poor.

Regarding Mk3s, and the refurbs, it depends what you like.
I prefer the refurbs that kept the IC70 seats because I think they beat all the others in terms of comfort. They may have fixed armrests, but all these movable armrests are too narrow for me. I like the fact the IC70s are nice large armrests.
For me the EMT refurbs are nice, as are the Anglian refurbs, but obviously WSMR beat the lot.
GNER and XC feel naked at times, because its all white metal up top. I like the cloth material just below the overhead racks, and on the end of these as well. It breaks it all up a bit.
But again, its all personal preference, and those that think the IC70s are tired and uncomfortable, will prefer GNERs refurb.
The worst of the lot though have to be FGWs. Horrible colours, tacky, hard upright uncomfortable seats. Bloomin awful. Which is a shame because before the refurb FGW had the best Mk3s in my opinion. Very very smart.

theres a trend here, first refurbs equals uncumfortable seats. Anyone spotted it? i like FSR as they have as a rule been good and hope they keep it, however, if they do, the next franchise wil most likely include the midlife refit of the 170s and if they do it then god knows what we'll get?

The extruded bodyshells of a Pendo (or anything else similar) should withstand impacts very well. However, the shell is almost certainly going to be a write off following an impact as it cannot be guaranteed that any repair won't have degraded the structure. You'd literally have to MRI the whole shell to look for defects. That's not about to happen soon!

Witness the farce that ensued with one of the units which had a scrape at WB. It took forever for a procedure for repair to be agreed and signed off, and even then the Italians had to undertake the repair.

The pendo has a great traction package, loading gauge dicates decreased interior space, but the Birmoid (Washwood Heath) cheapo interior is crap. But that was VT's spec..... Check the quantity of tickets and other packing items are inserted in the reading light panel. Rattle tastic.

I'll take a Mk3, but only a well maintained/spec'd one (i.e. not a GE example!). They are horrid with wheel flats.

Exactly the same.

Apart from two very minute differences ;) no hotline magazine holders and the bins in the vestibules are pulled open forwards to be changed, rather than having a swing door on the front. I believe Edge Hill have the latter point on their to-do list to change them all back to swing doors, but this can only be done once its formally accepted and useable for service.

I would guess pretty solid, but the usual disclaimers apply (ie it might fail etc etc)

Hmmm... In London tomorrow to get in position for the Deltic on Saturday. The dilemma is whether to do 67001 on the 18:06 Banbury or 90041. Both required.

I had heard that 90045 was allox earlier in the week so 67001 was the aim, however 90041 appearing changes perspective.

If by Deltic you mean 55022, the positioning tour is running tomorrow Preston-Euston.

You can do 67001 to Banbury for a +4 for a Voyager to Brum for a +2 (booked cross platform) for 90041. Although I do realise this may be difficult if you are located in London.

Yep, apparently ECS to Manchester. Plus the footex southbound is apparently an extra, normal service. So anybody should be able to travel on it no problem.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The service is up on the National Rail website journey planner.
2100 off Manchester Piccadilly, arrival 2353, calling Milton Keynes Central and Watford Junction
