This. The 379s are a solution looking for a problem if truth be told. Yes they are new and comfortable, but none of that will offset the fact that the railways are not in a good state financially and nobody can afford to lease the 379s right now. If they were affordable enough (and if they were wanted), then they would be in service right now - but they aren't, and that alone should be enough to prove that there is no demand for them right now.
My view is that the real choice is whether to scrap them, or try to store them for another few years until demand arises (which it will eventually) - not the choice between which TOCs will be willing to fork out millions to get them back into service during a time of financial cuts and instability.
Storage for several years really isn’t likely to have a good outcome, especially if they’re stored cold, and I can’t see anyone paying for warm store.
I agree with the view that much will depend on what the owners want to do. If they’re prepared to lease them at a low rate on the basis that anything is better than nothing then there is probably a deal to be done. If on the other hand they decide it’s all too much bother then, unless one of the other leasing companies wishes to buy them at scrap value (and I’m not convinced they would want to do that in the current climate and with other fleets unemployed not least the 350/2s), they could well end up getting sold for scrap.
My personal, perhaps wishful, thinking is that a deal of some kind will eventually happen. There is a real risk of ending up short of stock when and if demand recovers, especially now fleets like the 365s, 455s have been binned off, surely DFT knows that will be electorally risky in the south-east. We know this government doesn’t give a stuff about London, however with the polls as they are there are plenty of seats in the wider south-east which are now looking decidedly risky. They may think these polls are an over-reaction, but judging by opinions I hear from a wide cross-section of people the feeling I get is pretty much everyone is sick of this government and can’t want to boot them out.
