Careful with your generalised implied comparisons. I’ve certainly been on loco hauled stock that was quicker in accelerating compared to a DMU. And yes, modern trains do have better performance compared to older designs.I often think that people don't fully grasp the performance modern multiple unit trains are capable of.
We are certainly not in the loco hauled era any longer.
However, the type of traction is only one element here. Far more significant in my humble opinion is the planned dwell time compared to how long it actually takes the passengers to alight/board.
I’ve seen plenty of trains loosing time due to the actual station duties taking longer than the timetabled dwell time.
Whereas, the only time that I have noticed any significant loss of time due to train performance, is when the traction has a fault. Such as part of a multiple unit having engine/drive problems, a HST having one power car unable to produce traction, or similar.
Or when a train is formed of a multiple unit or locomotive and stock that has significantly different (as in lower) maximum speed, for example when a 90 MPH DMU has been substituted for a 125 MPH HST or 80X train.
I’m not sure a simple count of entry / exit foot fall at a station like Paddington is particularly enlightening.
Paddington now has many entrances/exits. Two London Underground stations (It’s rather uncommon for me to use the larger one at the city end). Certainly, a significant number of passengers use both tube stations, for onward travel elsewhere in or around London.
I presume that this survey must have actually stopped passengers and asked them questions. Otherwise how could it be determined if people were using “onward forms of travel”.
So you would need rather a lot of people to actually monitor the flows of people, or to ask them questions.
Euston I know less well. Mainly because although I often have entered the main entrance, I’m either only using the underground station, or am simply passing through (due to the HS2 works preventing me from using my normal route). In fact, I think I have only used a train from their once.
Oh, and what do people class as ‘with in walking distance’? I’ve walked to Euston from Paddington in the past. It’s not that far really.
