LNER unreliability caused by staff shortages

It strikes (no pun intended) me that, given the expectation mentioned upthread that things will not improve any time soon due to the imminent cessation of rest day working agreement, the time has come for a heavily scaled back emergency timetable.

E.g an hourly King's Cross to Leeds all stations (those served by LNER) and an hourly King's Cross to Edinburgh calling at Peterborough, then Doncaster shortly after the afore-mentioned Leeds, then York, Darlington etc.

Or, of course, more services per hour than that if they can be fully resourced with train crew working contracted hours / shifts only.

Passengers deserve honesty about what level of service can realistically be expected to run, and not what is planned to run but has a fair chance of being cancelled (sorry, removed from the timetable) the evening before.

Advice for the cancelled 1929 from Edinburgh

Customers are also able to use their existing tickets at no extra cost on the 19:58 LUMO Service from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross, which calls at Morpeth, Newcastle, Stevenage, and London Kings Cross. Customers are also able to join at these stations to complete their journey.

Customers are also able to use their existing tickets at no extra cost on the 19:59 CrossCountry Service from Edinburgh to York, which calls at Dunbar, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnmouth, Newcastle, Durham, Darlington, and York. Customers are also able to join at these stations to complete their journey.

Customers due to join at Northallerton are encouraged to join the earlier service at 20:58 South.

Rail Replacement is currently being sourced south of York and will be updated once confirmed.

I wouldn’t like to be turning up at York stations south of there and finding out an in a taxi or a mini bus
Certainly a massive improvement over what was being advertised for that service earlier in the day.

Rather gracious of LUMO to allow LNER customers aboard following a cancellation, seeing as it never seems to work the other way.
Regularly works the other way and on the occasions where it appears it doesn’t, it’s usually because the acceptance wasn’t requested in the first place.

The example I mentioned of Lumo passengers not being accommodated by LNER a few months ago was such an example. It transpired that the ticket acceptance Lumo had told their customers was in place hadn’t even been requested never mind approved. Some LNER station staff at Newcastle didn’t handle the situation professionally but ultimately Lumo were the ones responsible for the disruption.

Then the media has done your TOC an injustice, as all I ever see is reports of how Lumo passengers are stranded because of LNER refusing travel and Lumo's appalling frequency meaning the next one is either five hours away or tomorrow. :)
Where are these media reports? Apart from the odd post on Twitter I’ve not seen such reports.

If the DfT are making mass cuts to rolling stock, and passenger levels are as down on the network as you often insist they are (and I know you're remarkably well-informed, so I don't doubt it in the slightest I should add :)) then I wonder if the oddities should even be upheld long term, especially if route knowledge is mandating LNER to use up valuable staff and stock on them when there's a shortage. It's no secret most Harrogates and the Bradford & Skiptons rarely make it past Leeds.
The daytime Harrogates are the ones that really frustrate me. But axing those wouldn’t help the situation north of Newcastle as it’s completely different crews.

The other one that frustrates me is Glasgow. There’s little diversionary route knowledge advantage to retaining that either as route refreshers still have to run for Carstairs to Carlisle regardless, and no doubt probably already come from Edinburgh.

That's good then. I won't deny they seem to have better ticket acceptance policies than Avanti. It takes a lot for them to accept LNER customers when the ECML is messed up - I'll never forget how they accepted Scotland passengers to Manchester only, then shoved them onto TPE rather than allowing them on Glasgows.

During this period of increasingly shocking unreliability, I'm rather irritated to see the Middlesbrough remains booked to run. Surely this is probably the most pointless service on the network currently.
ECS for the Middlesbrough service comes down the Durham Coast line. Keeps Newcastle crews diversionary route knowledge up. LNER and it predecessors had to run 67s on route learning trips over it before diversions previously.

And should the proposed extra services start then Middlesborough is planned to have a 2 hourly service to London (assuming the plans haven't changed).

Don't know about the morning up service loads, which gets overtaken by a Grand Central Sunderland service, but the afternoon service has a decent load on it from London.

If you want to go through the requests on whatdotheyknow website someone has requested the figures fir the service.
Arguably the biggest reason the Middlesbrough service hasn’t been chopped isn’t the route retention it allows via the Durham Coast, but rather that it gives the Tories something to claim as a benefit of ‘levelling up’ for Teesside. The DFT likely would never have signed off on it starting in the first place if it wasn’t for the political gain the Tories get from it.

Alright then, rephrase it to on most days, Harrogate, Bradford and Skipton do not see all of their booked services. And when they only get a handful a day that is saying something.
They’re the best ones to cut, especially the evening ones which have never been well used. I’ve been the only passenger on both the evening Bradford and Harrogate services after Leeds.

The morning Skipton has been well loaded whenever I’ve used it. Never used the evening one but I can’t imagine it being that busy seeing as it’s been booked 5 car for a long time.

Just to add to the lumo vs LNER ticket acceptance for this evening. Having used the 1936 from Edinburgh a few times, and observed the 1958 as it overtakes at Doncaster I doubt very much that the 394 seats on the Lumo service will be over subscribed.
I’ve had an entire carriage to myself on the 19:58 from Edinburgh before.

They have just announced at KX on the 1500, that tickets for the 1506 & 1525 not valid and they have to go on the 1530. A very angry young mum with small child having to get off.
Surely they just want to get people on their way not piss people off and put 2 train loads on the 1530!?
Just seen tweets to LNER about this and tickets were valid on the 1500, so either poor communication , or TM making announcements off there own back, either way not good enough for passengers who are already angry and annoyed there train was cancelled.

The set goes on to Polmodie overnight.

There isnt much spare depot capacity at Craigentinny for it. There is also an ECS move from Edinburgh to Newcastle in the evening and a 0856 Newcastle to Edinburgh in the morning as there isn't enough space/capacity at Craigentinny.

What may look like a pointless/token extension actually exists for a reason.

It can and does use Craigentinny instead of Polmadie when there’s no crew to take it to Glasgow.

The history of the Middlesborough service and proposals go back way longer than since the Conservatives won the Red Wall seats. There are various access proposals on the ORR(?) website including its supposed benefits (relieving York on the anglo-scots services is one of the main ones).

Craigentinny can normally take 1 extra set above normal.
Anymore than that then they need to stable a set overnight in Waverley, if NWR allow, and also if the set has been serviced.
In extreme disruption, like the Scottish floods last week, if they know several hours in advance that they are getting more than 1 extra they can sometimes take one more, they then rejig how they will work the depot that night.

And things get moved/deferred/altered to be able to accommodate on the few occasions it happens.

If you think Craigentinny is awash with spare capacity spend an evening on site there.

The Tories had their eyes on Teesside for a long time before they won any seats there.

I know Craigentinny is just about at capacity, but it can take the set from Polmadie.

Not all the time it can’t.
Sometimes have to terminate another service at Newcastle to make space.

When will we know what trains are being cancelled on Sunday?

The recent cancellations have appeared around 20:00 the previous evening on...

Tempting fate now but LNER are running a much reduced service on Sunday due to the Engineering work so hopefully they can resource it.

Of course if Hitachi hadn’t been over ambitious with the amount of stock they can base at Craigentinny this wouldn’t be an issue - the 385s and 803s are all based there as are the 802/2s (split with Doncaster, which I think is the official allocation?)

But there’ll be no change to that anytime soon.

As I said earlier in the thread I've got a trip to York booked the week after next for three days. I'm in two minds now as to whether to cancel it or not, while I still can. I don't really want to as I've really been looking forward to it. If I do that means the hotel, the attractions I was intending on visiting, and the pubs I was intending on eating in will all lose my the money I was going to spend with them.

As it happens one of the trains that got cancelled today is the same train I have booked for my return (albeit on a Thursday), the 16:03 York - Kings Cross.

I wouldn’t be too put off by it. Worst case scenario you’ll travel on a later train than you’d expected and get delay repay. Appreciate it’s not ideal, but it’s not as bad as Avanti or TPE

You really can’t base 2 weeks time off today, 1603 York to King’s Cross is first time I’m aware that been cancelled due to the train crew shortage.

If it is cancelled you will be allowed to travel on the service before or after your cancelled service.

OK, thanks. I'm booked in First so I guess that may help when it comes to getting a seat if my booked train is cancelled.

Actually I was supposed to travel with Avanti in September when I had a few days away in Chester. In that case I was completely put off by the mess they are in and opted to travel with LNR & TfW instead.

Always seemed daft, that when Millerhill was altered to take the 385, that they didn’t do a proper depot for the units.

The main issue is having to stand for hours. Unless they put you in First?

first is equally as busy as standard class now a days, most trains I travel on, first class is full, that’s without adding cancelled trains in to equation.

Thanks will look tomorrow. Hoping to do 1000 KGX - DON on Sunday then back around 1430 to do the Lincoln diversion.

Northbound you should he OK for a seat on the 1000 to Leeds (the 1007 to Edinburgh has been reported as full and standing from London every Sunday of the diversions).

Southbound the 1423 ex Doncaster (1130 from Edinburgh) has been reported as full and standing every Sunday of the diversions.

The 1437 ex Doncaster (1405 ex Leeds) is probably a better bet for a seat though it does have a slower journey to london than the 1423.

1525 ex Doncaster (0947 ex Aberdeen) again reported full and standing every Sunday of the diversions.

1530 is a Hull Trains service so probaly a better bet for a seat.

Hope this helps!

Thanks that's very useful. I was expecting the Leeds trains to be less crowded but thanks for the confirmation.

I'm slightly surprised that stabling a set in the Waverley overnight is a big issue; 'Back in my day' (pre 2016) we regularly asked Virgin to stable their last arrival at Glasgow Central for the first departure next morning, to give the maintenance boys longer access in the Central/Polmadie area, and I don't recall it ever being a problem.

One thing I wish is LNER didn't keep using Rail replacement buses to and from north of Edinburgh instead of letting passengers use ScotRail services!

80x units have a 36 hour limit to the amount of time they can spend away from depot. Stabling a set in Waverley overnight would prevent it from running a full day's diagram either the day before or after stabling. The only LNER diagram that doesn't visit a depot or other servicing facilities at some point during the night is booked Mark 4s partly because of this.

Interesting, thanks. Is that 36 hour limit based on a mechanical or technical reason, or simply part of the contract with Hitachi?
