How will Euston cope during HS2 works in terms of platforming?

If I'm understanding this correctly by the end of the project we will have 16 Network Rail platforms and 10 HS2 platforms. Undeniably an increase in capacity for NR. Especially when you consider that many of the top-link express Birmingham and beyond services will have moved next door to the 10 HS2 platforms.

Of the NR platforms 4 will be short ones primarily for the Watford DC lines much like today, and 12 will be longer ones suitable for 11 car Pendolinos and in some cases the Caledonian sleeper. These services will run via Watford and Milton Keynes to many of the stations not served by HS2, I.e everything south of Bham Int. and the lower profile stns further up the WCML.

Very roughly these will be in the same place as the current platforms 1-15, but an extra platform will be squeezed in through realignment and the removal of the vehicle ramps.

All of this means quite a lot of disruption for the next 10 years on the network rail side. Are there any detailed plans or proposals anywhere to explain the impact this will have on timetabling, platform allocation etc?

If I’m understanding this correctly at some point in the mid-2020s we’re going to be down to 10 functioning NR platforms whilst the new alignment and rebuilding takes place…

I’ve heard speculative rumours about various things that I’m happy to share but wondered if anyone had anything a bit more official yet?

The recent Modern Railways supplement om HS2 at Euston says that P16 will come out of service in May 2023 for 2 years.
Later, P15 will also be taken out of service for a shorter time, to allow P16 to be rebuilt east of its current position (eliminating a siding).
There's nothing there about reduction of the NR station to 10 platforms.
It's the HS2 station that is "reduced" to 10 platforms, from the original 11.

Substantial amounts of the train planning work, if not all, to deal with P15 and 16 coming out temporarily is done. P2 is likely to have a small extension towards the buffers to get the sleeper in.
10 platforms is nonsense. We don't even go down to that level with a half station block.

That bit I understand, but when it comes to renovating/rebuilding platforms 14-1 are they doing all of this with the station running as normal?

(Not saying it can’t be done, just a question)

Do you have info on how existing service patterns will be affected yet or are they managing to do it all without reducing frequencies?

That bit (RECS) rebuilding/renovation of Euston conventional station is still a way off. It won't be happening whilst 15 and 16 are out temporarily.

I was involved in three small projects a few years ago driven by the requirement to keep Euston running. Illustrating how wide ranging the changes were, two of them were at Watford and Northampton. These supported changes in diagramming and servicing of rolling stock, which would ultimately result in less platform occupancy at Euston.

Dec 22 has pretty much made them redundant, if you mean the CET facilities etc...

Shouldn’t be an issue if Avanti are still running the West Coast franchise, as many platforms will be empty as half the trains will be cancelled anyway…!

For this reason I was surprised Dec 22 has almost all 8 car trains - only one weekday 12 car diagram I think - but a lot of peak extras. I do wonder though if this is so all LNR services can use any platform.
