From the close of service this Sunday (9th Oct), Southampton Minilink will join Simon’s previous ventures Gardbus and Southbourne Buses in the history books. He has posted the following on the Southampton Minilink main and enthusiast Facebook pages…

Important customer information

Unfortunately due to unforseen circumstances Southampton Mini Link will close after service on 09/10/22.

A limited service will be in operation for the rest of this week details will follow shortly.

I personally have been suffering from some returning health issues over the past few months and my partner has been taken unwell over the weekend. I therefore am unable to dedicate the time to the business as I need to be at home to look after family. We are not a large operator and do not have access to large resources to allow me to do both so I'm very sorry I have to come to this decision.

I thank all of our customers and staff personally for all of there hard work and hope another operator will come forward and step in to cover the routes we operate. The past year has been one of the highlights of my time in the bus industry and we have achieved so much with our popular services in Southampton.

All of our creditors including employees will be satisfied in full with all payments expected to be made no later than 31/10/22. We will be in contact with everyone shortly with more details.

Thank you

As predicted the other day, a swift ending to registered operations, saving him a few £ in fuel and driver wages. There are such things as driver agencies, but that'll cost £. He has done this before with Gardbus - closed before the registration period is up.

Southbourne Buses is effectively the same operation - he retained the operator licence and that's the one he is using for minilink. The previous registrations appear on the licence number when you search online.

Closing registered services without working through the requisite notice period may affect an operator’s good repute with the Commissioner?

The plan has now changed slightly - it looks like a reduced timetable will continue operating on the C (Eastleigh - Velmore - Chandlers Ford) until 28th October while Hampshire County Council seek alternatives.

I say “looks like”. The following has been published on the Southampton Minilink Facebook page.

Updated information 04/10/22

The temporary timetable for service 14 Eastleigh to Chandlers Ford will now be extended until 28/10/22 to allow Hampshire County Council to further look at alternative transport provision in the area.

Website & roadside information will be updated later today to show revised end date.

The 14 is/was of course the Eastleigh - Woolston - Bitterne - Chartwell Green route, so that is presumably a typo and he means C. The accompanying picture shows the amended timetable that was set to continue to 14th October with round trips from Eastleigh at 0915, 1115, 1315 and 1515.

!!! UPDATE 5TH OCTOBER !!!

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Yet more news today (5th October) that a new manager has been found, so…

Mon-Fri 14 (Southampton - Woolston - Bitterne - Chartwell Green) will end this coming Friday (7th Oct).

Mon-Fri C (Eastleigh - Velmore - Chandlers) will run four round trips (0915, 1115, 1315 and 1515) until 28th October.

Sat/Sun 13A (Southampton - Woolston - Bitterne - Harefield) will now continue at its current timetable until 30th October.

It is now “hoped” that from Monday 31st October the planned enhanced 13A will now go ahead. I believe the plan is/was to make it a 7 days a week operation. The following comes from the Minilink website today:

Important Service Update 05/10/22

The current Saturday & Sunday timetable for service 13A City Centre - Harefield will now continue until the 30/10/22

We have had many offers of help from those past and present in the bus industry & we have been able to put an interim plan in place to continue service on this route.

It is hoped the enhanced timetable from 31/10/22 on the 13A will still go ahead and further details will be confirmed by the end of the week.

Service 14 will still end on the 07/10/22 alternative travel options will be available on Cityred service 8,9 &13 for customers to undertake journeys.

…and a week after saviour announced, it’s back to closure after it fell through. From the Minilink official Facebook page:

Service Update 12/10/22

Despite our best efforts to secure a new manager/owner to take over the business talks with the potential purchaser have broken down.

We can confirm as a result of this all Southampton Mini Link operations will cease after 1700hrs on 28/10/22

For details of alternative services please see www.traveline.info

All roadside publicity will be removed over the next couple of days.

We thank you for your custom.

The collapse of Minilink continues in typical Gard fashion. No service this weekend on 13A.

Whilst I think everyone is understanding of the owner's current health issues, the whole running down of the operation seems par for the course for him and his operations. Attention to detail, and thinking things through never seemed to be a strong point. I'm thinking of such gems as the Marwell Zoo service in 2022 that didn't even get off the launch pad, or the 5 to Ringwood that was "always" going to come back.

It seems Simon has also posted about selling the company's prized bus, ex-Blue Triangle E200 SN57DWK. With this, it's prompted me to compile a list of how so many buses has passed through SML in such a short time using their enthusiastic social media postings:

SN57DWK - acquired Nov 2021, currently for sale
WA54JWC - acquired Aug 2022, active
WA54JWD - acquired Aug 2022, active
FF56BLU - acquired Jan 2022, gone Sep 2022
KP51WAO - acquired Nov 2021, gone
GP02DMV - acquired Mar 2022, gone July 2022
LK51XGL - acquired October 2021, gone Apr 2022
L5SLT - on loan from LinkRider during Mar 2022
GX54DVY - acquired Nov 2021, gone Jan 2022
YX59AAV - acquired 2021, gone Dec 2021
F5HDN - acquired 2021, gone Nov 2021
F5HOR - acquired 2021, gone Nov 2021
F5CBE - acquired 2021, gone Nov 2021
Plus a few more that SML never got or were also on loan.
Simon Gard has now put WA54JWC and WA54JWD up for sale on via their personal Facebook page. I'm assuming these two will be the final SML buses to go. I'm still convinced we'll see him back operating some unviable route in and around Southampton in the near future.

As an aside, who now owns KRU224F, the Bristol FLF that was with Dekkabus? Did that transfer to Simon with the merger / takeover / whatever it was?

Why the traffic commissioner fails to intervene and ban him from running registered local bus services defeats me. The normal rules of operation, especially notice periods when deregistering have long been optional as far as Simon is concerned. He would make as much, if not more from sticking to railway work and it is easier to resource and a known quantity when it comes to revenue - if the bus isn't paid for it doesn't move etc.

He had a public inquiry earlier in the life of this licence - which was the one he used with Southbourne Buses.

Simply because our TCs are spineless and would rather sit in the office doing nothing rather than doing the job that they are paid silly amounts of money to do.

It's because they are simply understaffed with a remit that precludes their active investigation into operators.

As operators have been told many times and in many forums - the TCs can only act upon evidence provided to them by their staff in DVSA and the local transport authorities. Their place is to judge, not to gather evidence. At the moment, enforcement staff seem more interested in chasing people who run school buses to comply with BODS (Bus Open Data) for services which often aren't available to the public and just clutter up data presentation to the public.

I like how they will chase those operators but not chase the operators who run normal public services and don't comply.

I thought if the school service was closed door, it didn't count for BODs?

Has been required since earlier this year.
The Number of normal passengers who’ve turned up for my closed school service since it’s been on bustimes is unbelievable and there is no note on To say, “students only” or Similar

Certain local authorities such as Devon seem much more pro active in supplying investigation to the TC than others. You’ll note theres regularly Devon based operators up in front for failing to operate registered services

Devon's tender requirements are a little more stringent than other local authorities. As Gard is operating under Hampshire I'm surprised they're not forwarding evidence to the TC's office. Hampshire always was one of the more switched on authorities. Given the past poor compliance history of this operator, the stopping services before registration period would be uncovered by a monitoring exercise. He'll be saving the fuel costs (which will run to a four figure sum) of running empty buses, thus gaining competitive advantage over compliant operators in the area.

Interesting. I wonder why that changed.

Operators can put notes on the timetables and can put in 'not for public use' on BODs too. It's rarely used but it is possible somewhere. NXWM buses for example, they have 'not for public use' on their description but their actual BODS entry for the route show the "<PublicUse>true</PublicUse>" which means that the public can use the bus.

As for notes, it's harder to make these work but I do believe that notes can be put in. BODs may kick up a fuss about it though. Sure it's done though as Stagecoach had notes on their entries for a while showing 'Pick up Skegness Mail Bag' and all sorts of stuff about a year ago.

The final route C ran today, 28 October. I see someone on Flickr (Sotonia) got a photo of it. As you can see, Simon was really spoiling the passengers, with L5SLT, a Toyota Coaster from Link Rider coaches of Swanage operating the service.

He must've had a special relationship with LinkRider, as he hired that vehicle for a short while in March of this year.

It is still owned by Trevor Shore. It was never owned by Dekkabus or Minilink, it was just made available to hire via the companies via Trevor's involvement.

Good to see. Thanks for update. There has been such a lot of churn from the various fleets, it was hard to work out who owned what

There's been massive staff turnover in other parts of Hampshire County Council, so I wouldn't be surprised if that hadn't affected transport too.
