They say she was 44 days in office. But a week of this was mourning for the Queen, and other 2 weeks or so spent in conference season. She's probably only had 2 working weeks in office, and completely screwed everything up.

Rather amusingly, I just checked some dates...

Boris Johnson resigned on 7 July. Nominations for Tory leader opened and closed on 12 July, with ballots closing on 2 Sept. So Liz Truss spent 7 weeks and 3 days as a candidate campaigning to be Tory leader.

She became PM on 6 Sept. If she can manage to hang on until 28 October she'll have achieved the 'milestone' of spending longer as Prime Minister than she spent as a candidate campaigning for the job.

So she didn't manage to hang on long enough to match the time spent as a candidate

Should there be a GE ASAP? Of course.

Will we get one? No. They will probably put Penny Mourdant in to claw back support and leave it until the polls look nice again as always. The Conservative Party are just Charlatans abusing their position of power over the people of the UK at this point. Unless they announce a GE very soon after the new budget announcement then, frankly, whoever they put in charge is irrelevant to me. I don't take kindly to such games...

Inevitably now yet another cabinet reshuffle followed by some time before they get their feet under the table and can start to at least attempt to do anything that will move the country forward.

If the polls look nice. If whoever they put in refuses to be legitimised by a GE, they will just come across as arrogant and obsessed by power, and I doubt it'll go down well.

Best thing for the Tories would be to put in someone disposable. Anyone with long-term leadership aspirations will be damaged by being PM for the next few months.

That would be fair, yes. Put in their next attempt at a PM and then ask us whether we'd prefer Tory V or Starmer.

Well, we have never seen the like of this before. How they find a unity candidate, I don't know. I remember the early 80s Labour, the 1990 Thatcher turmoil and John Major's b******s but have never seen anything like the last year with this cavalcade of incompetents. How Liz Truss was anywhere near high office, lord knows? James Cleverley (showing nominative determinism isn't 100%) as Foreign Secretary? Economic policy is like something out of the 6th form common room.

It's appalling. Yet we won't see a GE as it would be an act of Tory suicide. I'm going for Mordaunt (PM) and Hunt (Chancellor) joint ticket and for them to try and steady the ship even if it is clearly holed beneath the waterline.

Hopefully, there's still enough talent in the Labour Party that they can step up in 2024.

I would say not having a GE would be an act of Tory suicide. It will be seen as an act of unbelievable "born-to-rule" arrogance, and whoever replaces Truss will I suspect become almost as disliked as she has become. And I suspect it will attract mass protests and anger, as has been suggested on here even (I think) by Tory supporters.

I don't often agree with you, but I do on this occasion. Under current circumstances, not having a general election will look (and be) arrogant and completely undemocratic.

As for who will stand for next leader... agreed. It's a completely poisoned chalice. The inevitable fate of anyone stepping up is - within the next two years - to suffer all the blame for losing a general election which in reality was irrevocably already lost by (mainly) the actions of Liz Truss (with some contribution from Boris).
