This may have been covered elsewhere but I have missed it. What will the platforms at Paddington and Liverpool Street, that currently take the Crossrail services, be used for once these services are diverted later this year?

A look at RTT for a date after the December timetable change will show how platform usage at both stations is changed once Elizabeth Line trains generally no longer run there.

Nothing specific, just spreading out the rest of the mainline services a bit more and reducing use of platform 14 at Paddington. The high numbered platforms at Liverpool Street don't appear to be used much at all. (Contingency for issues in the core has also been mentioned.)

Liverpool St was supposed to retain peak only Crossrail extras to/from Gidea Park, running at 4 tph, but I don’t think that’s happening in the full numbers expected. I found 2 up trains in the morning and 2 down in the evening peak using P17, does anyone know if that has a planned date to increase?

Thanks for this. There is the opportunity at Liverpool Street to revamp the approach to the Station from Bow Junction. Really the two slow lines will become free once Crossrail is up and running. These lines took the Shenfield services and the occasional ECS and C2C services. So for example the Southend services, in part, could be diverted at Bow. Just a thought.

Yes in practice the middle of the 3 pairs of tracks inwards of Bethnal Green could be used for more trains from Lea Valley (via Clapton) and trains moved into slightly higher numbered platforms.

Until about 1989 there were more double lead crossings near Bethnal Green that made these moves easy in parallel, but they were low speed 20 or 25mph and were replaced by 40mph single lead ladder crossovers so not as easy to switch tracks on approaches to Liverpool Street during intensive peak hour use

There is no point in making infrastructure interventions if they are not necessary for the service levels. With no sign that services will need to return to the levels seen prior to 2020, let alone more, the money needed to make interventions can be better spent elsewhere.

Yep just a couple of extra peak trains; there's already 12tph going towards Paddington, the current level of peak service. There will be some spare units in the "high level" platforms during the peak.

There is capability for Elizabeth line services to utilise 2-3 platforms at each station if the central section is blocked with some discussion in this thread.

Any chance of the Sleeper going back to its old lie-in times at Paddington if there's more platform capacity?!

The grand plan for Liverpool St was to double track Bow Jn (currently single lead) to make more use of the space on the electric lines between Bow and Liverpool St vacated by Crossrail. But only platform 15 can take a full 10 car 720, so that may now be of limited use and perhaps not a good investment.

If GA had kept to 4/8/12 x 20m instead if 5/10 x 24m stock that may have helped the business case for Bow Jn, but it's all too late for that now.

Can 16 and 17 take 745s (not that it is the ideal place to put the flagship service)?

No, 745s are too long. The once muted Lowestoft to Liverpool St trains could use 16/17, but they bring their own set of different problems.

Other than that only a 5 car 720 would fit in 16/17.

Wasn't part of the business case for crossrail the recycling of platforms at Liverpool Street high level and Paddington high level? It does seem a bit unfortunate that these benefits are not being realised.
