an even better option would be to pick a sensible place to switch from 3rd rail to overhead and electrify most of the distance using OHLE. And electrify GWML to Exeter as well while we're at it. If only the government would provide the funding.If we didn't already have 3rd rail covering fairly long distances, there's no way we'd choose to do so now. No other countries use it on the scales and at the speeds we do, and that's the case for a good reason.
That said, 3rd rail all the way to Exeter would still be a better solution than either hydrogen or batteries.
TBH, battery is probably a better option than installing so much new 3rd rail
