One of my pet hates is people moaning about crying children. If the parent is ignoring them, different story, but when they are trying to pacify them and, you know, parent, leave them alone! From my work with children and schools there are so many parents in a financial position whereby they cannot afford a car and have to use the train, if they have to take their child on a peak train to collect siblings from school, make an appointment, suck it up! Kids cry. You did it, I did it.
As a dad and grandad I can assure every childless traveller that the adult with the crying baby absolutely doesn't want it to cry either! Sometimes, they just cry, and every parental trick in the book doesn't seem to work. We're deeply conscious too that others might find it difficult to deal with as well, but escape from the confines of home and travel to family/friends/holiday is part of normal life that everyone is entitled too.
Exactly these above. Parents/guardians don't want to have the baby cry, but cry they will and sometimes there is nothing on God's Earth that you can apparently do to stop them. All babies do it at some point - it's not the fault of the baby or parent - and crying is meant to be discomforting for adults so they pay the child attention (to feed/to care/etc)!
If it's such a problem (even if you're in the quiet coach), I would suggest moving carriage, changing trains, or using a car/taxi where this is not likely to be an issue... Letting your (older) kids run riot round a carriage is another matter entirely.
(I've had to have a pop at a bus driver before on a local village service who had a go at mother of two because of her crying baby : who also almost left without me when I was helping her off the bus with the pram as she was so flustered and trying to sort the little one out...)
