The morning peak service on the 1 and 2 (Perth’s busiest route) has been virtually non existent for weeks. It must be a nightmare for the many people in Tulloch and Letham that normally use the bus to get to work, school or college!
What is even stranger is No7 has managed to operate every 20min without hassle.

Angus service changes for 3rd October have gone through this morning on Vosa website. One interesting note is the X16 which will only operate for one month.

I wonder how that service will work, I remember they ran a 16X going back maybe 5 years ago but it only operated near rush hour?

I found the old route here: https://getmyride.uk/route-ssty-16x-dundee-perth

here is the defunct page for the 16X: https://www.stagecoachbus.com/route...th-south-street-dundee-bus-station/xhao016x.i

Also it reminds me of the spin off X7 (the X8): https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/local-news/hospital-bus-cuts-massive-blow-12199542

However, Stagecoach has now said it wants to withdraw the X8 service - which only started running last July - saying usage of the service is “continually very low” while usage of the X7 service “continues to increase”.

Councillor Wilson branded the proposal “ill-conceived and badly planned “.

I wonder if this is another test run possibly of bringing back a secondary bus to Perth? (pending on timetable)

With this amount of changes, they really ought to provide extra information (more detailed change descriptions, rough route maps) so that passengers can visualise the changes. Or perhaps it's deliberate so they can press ahead with their "proposed" changes regardless.

Angus service changes for 3rd October have gone through this morning on Vosa website. One interesting note is the X16 which will only operate for one month.

Now that the details of changes have emerged for 31st October, I can guess this X16 will be replacing the journeys on the X7 currently operated by Perth depot in the morning (0642 PRI-Dundee, 0820 Perth-Dundee). Then it'll be incorporated into the main 16 registration/timetable from 31st October

The link doesn't seem to work anymore and I cant find them under service updates.

Some of the changes are not that surprising, like the no33a getting chopped during the week. It looks like at least 15 buses have been taken out just within Fife network.

It looks like X56 will no longer be operated by the Perth depot, however will this be enough to regain its passengers lots to Ember? I don't think it will and I think further cut will happen with the Perth section being lost.

TRANSPORT minister Jenny Gilruth has welcomed the announcement from Stagecoach that it will be introducing the UK’s first all-electric city bus networks.

Plans are underway to see Britain’s biggest bus operator make its city bus networks in Inverness and Perth all-electric from the end of 2022 and early 2023 respectively.

New e-buses are set to run across routes that have previously operated with largely diesel fleets, helping to drive cleaner air in the two cities.
Stagecoach is introducing the £13.9 million fleet of 38 new e-buses, partly funded by the Scottish Government, as part of Scotland’s overall target to achieve net zero by 2045.
Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth said: “I’m pleased that Scottish Government investment continues to rapidly transform bus fleets across the country.
This latest announcement from Stagecoach is welcome, and is fantastic news for everyone who lives in, works and visits Inverness and Perth.

“Not only will these new buses help reduce transport emissions and respond to the climate emergency, they will improve local air quality too.”

The new electric buses in Perth are set to be introduced in early 2023, will be made up of a £4.8m fleet of 13 buses.

They will add to the fleet of nine zero emission buses introduced in the city last December.

Gilruth continued: “Stagecoach has been a valued partner in our Bus Decarbonisation Taskforce.

“They understand that to respond to the climate emergency, we all need to accelerate the transition to a zero-emission bus fleet as soon as possible.

“I look forward to seeing the latest electric buses soon, which I know continue to be welcomed by customers across Scotland.”
The £9.1m investment in Inverness will see a fleet of 25 new electric midibuses introduced from late 2022, replacing the city’s diesel bus fleet.

New zero emission buses are also being introduced over the coming months on Stagecoach networks across other areas of Scotland including Aberdeen, Ayr, Dunfermline, Kirkcaldy and Kilmarnock.

The consultation has been re-posted, this time with miniscule maps. I have updated the link in post #3,364, to save me having to quote it all again.

Looking at the proposed service changes, almost none of them are very good. Lots of frequencies reduced from half-hourly to hourly, longer journey times, some settlements having their Stagecoach services cut completely.

In the age of the climate crisis, it's disappointing to see Stagecoach are making it more difficult for the public to travel by public transport. As a 20-year-old, it also disappoints me that these cuts are coming not long after the introduction of free bus travel for under-22s. This makes it more difficult for people like me to travel by bus. While the service changes don't massively affect the area where I live, I have a friend who stays in Blairhall and they won't be too pleased to find their bus service is proposed to be cut from half-hourly to hourly. Likewise, I have a friend who stays in Saline - a doubling of journey time to Dunfermline by bus will probably just make them use their car more, especially when it's only a 15min drive.

The issue I have with service cuts is while I know some can be necessary and make sense, do they have a noticeable impact on finances? In my mind more cuts = less passengers = less income? Of course you're spending less by using fewer buses and thus less fuel etc but you're also seeing fewer customers. Demand is never stable - generally higher frequencies create some additional demand (as for example a bus every 10 minutes is far more attractive than one every hour) and lower frequencies reduce demand as some will choose to drive, walk, cycle etc, so do some service cuts create a catch-22 situation of less service but no equivalent increase in profitability? I'm aware this is the situation at many of Britain's least used rail stations - services have been cut, which results in less people using the station, which leads to further reductions in services, which leads to even fewer passengers, etc and etc until the station has one train a week or is closed entirely.

I suspect the free bus travel for under 22s has a bearing on this. The way the reimbursement is designed the operators now make a profit or a significant loss. But if you have routes that carry nothing but pass holders because it's users are either the very young or the very old with the old disabled person thrown in then that's not cash fares or more likely card fares which the operator can can present a slice of as profit at the end of the day. Sadly that's how the express network will continue to to survive although at the moment anyway by the looks of it not thrive as even it is getting tweaked

The real issue is that the funding which has been keeping many bus services afloat over the last 2.5 years is coming to end in Scotland this October. Most of the larger operators will be looking at a (negative) gap of several million pounds between the operating costs of their current networks, and their current revenues. Therefore, without funding, they have to find a way of returning to break even. The same process will be happening all over the country. Buckle up!

This is it in a nutshell to be honest. People are about to get a major reality check everywhere.

The cuts are unfortunately needed. Some of the routes which are getting chopped are so dead however, just like 2014/2016, it would seem the best solutions are not being found. Even stranger, the Express network has not been improved which it badly needs. The X26 needs to come back so do the extras on X55, X59 and X61.

Big question, have they gone overboard with the cuts so it looks like passengers have won a battle when some of the ideas don't go ahead?

There may be an element of politics being played, as I suspect the politicians didn’t believe the warnings, and may only do so once their mailboxes are bulging!
If they want a sustainable public transport system, it has to be funded in some manner.

I expect this won't be the first round of service reductions, and we will end up facing a race to the bottom where the bus companies justify reducing and withdrawing services because of reduced usage, which will have only fallen because they are offering a poorer service in the first place.

The 77 between Dundee and Newport, Wormit and Gauldry going completely apart from presumably subsidised evening journeys will be a major blow, leaving Newport with only two direct buses an hour across the bridge, and those further down the coast in Gauldry etc having no direct buses to Dundee at all.

Not entirely sure what the point of the X16 is if it's just going to replace instead of supplement peak time journeys through the Carse, giving Errol in particular a poorer service.

Just one, I think? The Moffat & Williamson 77B, as the Stagecoach X54 is proposed not to be serving Newport.

I said this elsewhere earlier, and I'll say it here too: If bus services are cut, they become less appealing to passengers, which stimulates further decline, leading to further cuts. Take a look at the 37 in Glenrothes, for example: it's currently every 15 minutes to Asda/Morrisons. The replacement (service 40) is hourly, and only goes as far as the bus station. How is that appealing, in any way, to passengers? It then provides a path for Stagecoach (or any operator) to withdraw the service entirely, as people aren't using it because it's so unappealing.

You'll also note the changes article is deliberately vague, so that the company can press ahead with their "proposals" without people noticing, until the new timetables come into effect. They can then counter the backlash by saying "we consulted but we didn't get any feedback about this". The withdrawal of the entire 36 service on a Sunday, leaving Newburgh (and other Fife villages) with no service is a prime example of that. You'd have to go onto the 36 PDF timetable, and notice there wasn't a Sunday page there. I certainly didn't notice it until it was mentioned on social media.

I also think these changes will be paving the way for the arrival of EVs at Glenrothes and Dunfermline depots, to make the routes/running boards more suitable for those vehicle types (e.g. the "split up" Glenrothes town services, and lack of school day variations on Dunfermline town services)

Not entirely sure what the point of the X16 is if it's just going to replace instead of supplement peak time journeys through the Carse, giving Errol in particular a poorer service.
I don't think it's a poorer service, it's actually an improved service for Invergowrie, Longforgan and Inchture. They are replacing the peak X7 services currently operated by Perth depot, which currently omit these villages.

I didn't spot that, that's even worse for Newport residents in that case.

Thanks for the clarification, I had assumed that these were simply replacing regular 16 journeys.

Obviously a lot a bad news with very little succour, though this will be every operator at some stage, given the national picture

The 77/ Newport seems one of the biggest losses with no attempt to even divert a couple of 42s that way, yet Tayport still gets two commercial services to Dundee each hour. I’m not saying that the Newport (plus Wormit) population is necessarily the same as Tayport, but is it really completely different territory for sustaining a service?

The 46 is a nice nod to an old route number, although the hourly replacement for the 7A means that the total Kirkcaldy- Leven service seems on the light side, compared to historic frequencies

Kirkcaldy town services being “thirty something” looks wrong though (I appreciate it’s to put the new 34/35 next to the established route numbers from Kirkcaldy towards the retail park, but Kirkcaldy was “eighty something” in my day!)

Interesting to see Dalgetty Bay’s express service is part of routes running through to St Andrews twice per hour (the Inverteil road out of Kirkcaldy towards Dalgetty Bay was previously the main route in the era of CityLink running the 959, the precursor to the current X59, before the A92 transformed the road network, Stagecoach seemed to treat the A92 as being the better route, the longer distance expresses for Leven etc running via Halbeath, the Dalgety Bay services going no further north than Kirkcaldy, but things are going back to the older version, twice as many via Dalgetty Bay)

Kirkcaldy’s “fast” service to Halbeath will only be half what it was, in comparison, given withdrawal of the X27A and diversion of the X60 through Dalgetty Bay, credit to Stagecoach for trying to embrace the new journeys etc but it seems to have gone back to how things were instead

I wonder how many of the other express journeys are only being sustained by ScotRail being so poor, and could be at risk of the train operator ever gets its act Together again?

Agreed, similarly I hadn’t noticed the X54 was coming out of Newport when I’d first looked at the changes , it’s only jumping out when you see the map. Sneaky. And seems silly to use subterfuge, be honest with your passengers about such big things

I also think these changes will be paving the way for the arrival of EVs at Glenrothes and Dunfermline depots, to make the routes/running boards more suitable for those vehicle types (e.g. the "split up" Glenrothes town services, and lack of school day variations on Dunfermline town services)

Ah, I’d not considered that, I was looking for patterns, given the way that some routes are becoming a quite convoluted combination of tagging together multiple services (the 43!) and others are getting very short (40, 93 etc) whilst some longer routes are chopped up (X37)

How does the level of Bus Subsidy compare to rail ?

Arguably does the former deserve an increase funded by reducing the latter as ultimately would this not benefit more travellers ?

Just one less bus an hour between Kirkcaldy and Leven, I think. Currently there are 2 7s, 2 7As, an X60 and an X61. From October it's proposed there'll be the 2 7s, 1 46, 1 X58 and 1 X60.

If you look at the timetable, service 31 and 40 fit perfectly, so why not just combine both? that would still give some people a direct bus. The better idea would be to combine the 38 and 40. If we all cast our minds back to 2016, it just feels like the ghost of the past are still floating over these changes.

* Dunfermline Town service ideas being ripped up and changed, mind you that new Super collage and High school campus must have played a part in these changes.
* 36 on Sundays was suppose to be withdrawn back in 2016 but manage to be kept.
* 6a was to be killed off but manage to be kept.
* No 9/A been wiped out and new 43 try's to fill in more of the missing gap.
so on and so on.

I think its time they just scrap everything and start again, its clear its becoming a mess, just look at route 7 Dunfermline - Leven.

Dunfermline Super Campus not due for completion till 2024, am sure things will change again.

The 1/2 almost goes back to bits of the 72a/c from a few years ago!

The Sunday service on the 36 used to be a Perth & Kinross Council (PKC) tendered service (back in early-mid 2010s), which was commercially extended to/from Glenrothes. Did it become fully commercial at some point?

Something else I've noted is that the Perth service 5 will gain a Sunday service. Currently, the 56B covers the Moncreiffe/Craigie areas of Perth on a Sunday, but there are no changes proposed to that service. Can anyone shed any light? I find it odd they've added a Sunday service to a route which is already covered by something else.

Edit: The 56 is changing, they've just not put it on the website: https://tiscon-maps-stagecoachbus.s...les/East Scotland/Perth/TEMPORARY/P056_tt.pdf

You have to wonder if the company has just pulled the plug on the 77 as it's too much hassle? As it stand it's interworked with no 42 from the Glenrothes depot, but ever since the Dundee depot closed down it's been around the houses.
