Does anyone know why this service was cancelled at Edinburgh today?

Realtimetrains suggests a "problem with the signalling equipment".

Seems to have affected the LNER service after departing Perth. Noted that Scotrail services have also been impacted today.

As mentioned above. Lightning strike in Perth area. Not sure why is wasn't continued beyond Edinburgh, albeit late, other than that.

Yes, that is what got me wondering if there was more to it than a signal failure.

Ran as an additional 1Z13 from Edinburgh.
Why did it need to run as an additional, the original service was not excessively late at Edinburgh?

The set formed the restarted 1E15 (ex Aberdeen, which was running late), running as 1Z15 departing at 1330. 1E15 then terminated and formed 1E16.

Just protecting performance on the ECML, and the service south of Edinburgh.

That is a bit odd. When you bear in mind I've just dealt with an East Midlands Railway service running 74 minutes late, and kept to its full route. Whilst the following service is now also delayed behind it.

The correct decision IMO. 1E13 was 65 late at Edinburgh, 1E15 (which 1E13 formed) was 23 late.

Doing it that way didn’t make anything any later, ensured almost right time running south of Edinburgh for all of the 1130, 1230 & 1300 departures, avoided extra pressure on the 1200 due to the lateness of the original 1130 set, and protected through journey opportunities as best as possible.

Root cause was a combination of a lightening strike affecting signalling, and speed restrictions imposed due to poor weather north of Edinburgh.

Totally agree, well explained.

If you're on about the delays on the Skegness route, I don't think you can compare this with the operations of long distance services on the ECML. Certainly won't be any stock available or crew changes to do what LNER have done here.

LNER are quite good at doing this keeping the service from Scotland running broadly to time by utilising other sets for right time departures. The North of Edinburgh sets usually end up running the full length but pick up a new path at Edinburgh

More my point being the decisions that are made regarding train running. On other occasions a service may, as seen from this thread, may terminate early to aid service recovery. Equally, a service may omit some stations for service recovery purposes. However, it doesn't always happen. I recall travelling south from Edinburgh one evening and the train was delayed by another train failing between Edinburgh and Dunbar. The service continued through to London, but was over two hours late.

All down to circumstances, even things like varied train crew diagrams due to engineering works could cause variations in how service disruption is handled. Certainly earlier on in the day the options for handling disruption are slightly more flexible, but as you get towards the end of the day the options get more limited.

The services that terminated at Edinburgh to then restart as 1Z services had already failed ppm, so terminating them to restart as alternative services really was the right decisions.

For further info 1S04 formed 1Z13 in path of E13, the set would normally run ecs for route refresh to Glasgow.

Perhaps LNER, Avanti WC and TPE should be merged.

Perhaps LNER, Avanti WC and TPE should be merged.

What we need is a clean sweep of Avanti management, starting from just above the likes of driver/guard managers.

Unfortunately TUPE doesn't allow us that. I increasingly take the view that it should protect frontline staff only, while the company taking over should have the option to make management redundant and replace it.
