But how did the 7 car units do that when they weren’t allowed through the tunnel?
They were dragged by a class 37 via the North London Line (but didn't change over as regularly as 9-car units do).

No everything is on 345 timings. The biggest risk with 315s is station dwell times, but in the grand scheme of things causes little issue in practice. It may impact slightly on right time performance figures but that impact is negligable.
Yes the 315s are typically 1 or 2 minutes late by Brentwood. Not a big problem.

Which 315s were the first to operate under the Elizabeth Line brand today?
I can confirm that they were unbranded externally, but still smartly presented complete with new Elizabeth Line maps and that 838+853 did the honours.

Due to a logistical error with a ticket machine (I was not expecting different behaviour at Liverpool Street from what I had seen at Paddington, where I didn’t buy a ticket to Shenfield in case I missed a Thameslink service later in the day) which was quickly resolved by staff at Liverpool Street, I was not able to get the 16:30 departure from Liverpool Street, but I was able to get a later fast Greater Anglia service and return on the 17:20 from Shenfield.

It should have been 315847 + 315856 on 2W59 0751 Shenfield - London Liverpool Street, going by the diagrams. In short, the morning diagram starts at Shenfield sidings and is normally worked by the previous day's evening diagram set which ends its day at Shenfield sidings (and 847 + 856 was yesterday's PM set). It may be worth a TOPS request to confirm.

Usually different sets on a given day work the morning and evening workings, although last Friday (20/05) 315838 + 315853 seemingly worked both.

Thanks for update and confirmation that they are still working. Many thanks

Well, since they are continuing on it seems, who wants to place bets on whether they will receive the EL roundel on the side.....

I am guessing they will continue until the as yet unspecified date in the autumn when stage 5b minus starts (22tph through service) as that will free up the units working into Paddington (main) that are overlapping those to Paddington (Elizabeth line).

Also won’t need the 3 trains still as 7car, (2 for service, one spare) and as these are converted the pool of 9car units expands.

Ok, thank you. Do you know where they are stabled over the weekend please?
They should be stabled where they are left on Friday night and needed on Monday morning - ie one pair at Ilford, one at Aldersbrook and the other at Shenfield. However, engineering possessions or other requirements may lead to a different plan. Looks like there may be two pairs at Aldersbrook (and none at Ilford) this weekend as the usual move from Aldersbrook to Ilford isn't scheduled on Friday. Instead, there are two movements on Monday.

Good day -
I am visiting London this week and I am hoping to catch a ride on the Class 315s.
Are class 315s still running on the 16:30 from Liverpool Street to Shenfield? Curious if there are any diagrams available showing when class 315s are expected to be running.
Real Time Trains shows the last few weekdays that this service is “pathed as class 345”, which gave me cause for concern.

Forgive my ignorance if it appears that I am not understanding something. Grateful for any assistance that can be provided!

I can assure you that the last 3 pairs of 315s will continue running peak services between Liverpool Street and Shenfield until more 345s are freed up by the full integration of Elizabeth Line services in the autumn and that despite their age, they are able to keep to 345 timings on the GEML.

These are exactly the concerns I had on the core section opening day, but I succeeded in making a 315 from Shenfield.

Wonderful, that is excellent news, thank for you the information!

Are there any specific scheduled trips that the 315s are (usually) guaranteed to be assigned to? I recall hearing that the 16:30 from Liverpool Street to Shenfield is worked by a class 315, but I am curious if this is still reliably true and/or if there are other scheduled workings that are usually covered by class 315s.

Thanks!

Yes 1630, 1815, 1957, 2142 and 2334 LST-SNF are the booked class 315 runs. They also do the 0751 SNF-LST in the morning.

Have you read the rest of this thread, since I asked all these questions in May? It took me a while to get hold of all the information myself. Nothing has changed since then to alter the 315 workings.

What will noticeably change is trains will run through from Shenfield to Paddington, Heathrow and Reading. When that happens, the 3 remaining 7 car 345s on the Great Western will be lengthened and have their software updated to run through the tunnel (7 car 345s are banned from the core section) which will in turn relieve the 315s of their duties. Hopefully 1 or 2 will be preserved.

Thanks for these timings. Yes there is 1 evening peak diagram which starts from Shenfield at 1538, runs these services from London and also the returns SNF-LST at 1720, 1903, 2048 and 2236. There is also a morning diagram, which I believe is worked by the pair that worked the previous evening’s diagram, the reason for this being that the 3 pairs circulate between the 3 sidings which I believe are Shenfield, Gidea Park and Ilford Depot, with 1 pair on maintenance, although it is more likely for this cycle to vary than it is for the diagrams to see 345 substitutions.

I was planning to get the 16:30 from Liverpool Street but ended up missing it trying to get a ticket from London Boundary Zone 6, which had been available from the ticket machines at the entrance to the Elizabeth Line station at Paddington, which are National Rail ticket machines, but not at Liverpool Street because they are London Underground ones, so it’s the Greater Anglia ticket machines by the main terminal platforms.

Luckily I managed to get a 720 with 1 stop at Stratford to make the 17:20 back, which I think was a good idea in the end because obviously in the evening peak, services into London will be much quieter than those out and I got to do both the fast and slow lines (or main and electric as I was told). I also managed to do the 15:09 317 from Hertford East to Liverpool Street on the last day of those. What I have to say is I knew nothing about the GER or it’s lines before I travelled on some of them but they are particularly interesting. Next I probably want to try and do some 455/7s (specifically the ones with Class 508/0 trailer cars) from Waterloo since the SWML seems just as interesting. I believe it is much more grade separated than all others.

I stayed in Brentwood for a few nights in February. I had three pairs of 315s so they seem to rotate round as planned. I can confirm that trains in the peak direction were very full. I expect they are worse now. To be honest I don't ever remember the Shenfield trains not being busy. They were already cosy again in summer 2020.

There were 2 pairs of 315's out last night (15.08.22), 315847 & 315856 were on the "normal" diagram, I passed 315838 with an unidentified set on what appeared to be 17:35 Liverpool Street - Shenfield.

I think it's bananas that they're keeping a sub fleet of old trains for one train per day in each direction. I'd think it'd be easier just to cancel those services if they can't manage to get a 345 on them.
Easier, perhaps, but cancelling an evening peak train on a busy commuter line is also non-ideal. I caught the 1630 LST-SNF (315837+315857 as far as I remember, though I shall check my book when I find it (!)) when I was last in London (as a sort of valedictory last trip for the many hours I've spent on them) and it was full enough that it took a long time for me to get from my seat to the door in order to get off at Stratford, and (from what I could tell) the train was full and standing after Stratford. Imagine what would happen if you had to stick them all onto the next service, which would likely be just as full. Bananas it may be, but if it means that a regular service can run, and avoids crush loadings as much as possible, I'm for it.

Happy to report that I had two rides on the 315 today! Caught the 16:30 LST-SNF, and then rode the 1720 SNF-LST. Took a ton of video, and will be sure to share the final product here when it is done processing. Thanks all for your insight!

Good to hear that you caught one. Was the 1720 quieter than the 1630 as predicted?

Last week the 315 diagram (16:30 / 18:30 /19:57 etc departures from Liverpool Street) were:
838 + 853 (Monday 5th)
856 + 847 (Tuesday 6th)
856 + 847 (Wednesday 7th)
838 + 853 (Friday 9th)

857 +837 were in Aldersbrook Sidings. I was on the South Coast with 313's on the Thursday so I don't know which pair were out. So nice to still see them and the 18:15 departure time was a nice one to do only getting busy at Stratford. I used a zone 9 travelcard on the Tuesday and I have to say the run from Harold Wood to Brentford was quite something.

Certainly would have been ;)
Think you’ve been a victim of spill chucker.

Its a reasonable climb up Brentwood bank, nothing to todays traction apart from heavy freight, but significant in the past.

315857 & 837 are on todays (15th) 11.26 Shenfield-Liverpool St after working the 9.41 Shenfield & 10.34 Liv St at least.

In my experience they are very consistent. Every pair gets to exactly 70 mph before braking for Brentwood.
