But how did the 7 car units do that when they weren’t allowed through the tunnel?Through the tunnel as empty stock workings.
They were dragged by a class 37 via the North London Line (but didn't change over as regularly as 9-car units do).But how did the 7 car units do that when they weren’t allowed through the tunnel?
Yes the 315s are typically 1 or 2 minutes late by Brentwood. Not a big problem. No everything is on 345 timings. The biggest risk with 315s is station dwell times, but in the grand scheme of things causes little issue in practice. It may impact slightly on right time performance figures but that impact is negligable.
I can confirm that they were unbranded externally, but still smartly presented complete with new Elizabeth Line maps and that 838+853 did the honours.Which 315s were the first to operate under the Elizabeth Line brand today?
It should have been 315847 + 315856 on 2W59 0751 Shenfield - London Liverpool Street, going by the diagrams. In short, the morning diagram starts at Shenfield sidings and is normally worked by the previous day's evening diagram set which ends its day at Shenfield sidings (and 847 + 856 was yesterday's PM set). It may be worth a TOPS request to confirm.Which 315s were the first to operate under the Elizabeth Line brand today?
Thanks for update and confirmation that they are still working. Many thanksI can confirm that they were unbranded externally, but still smartly presented complete with new Elizabeth Line maps and that 838+853 did the honours.
Due to a logistical error with a ticket machine (I was not expecting different behaviour at Liverpool Street from what I had seen at Paddington, where I didn’t buy a ticket to Shenfield in case I missed a Thameslink service later in the day) which was quickly resolved by staff at Liverpool Street, I was not able to get the 16:30 departure from Liverpool Street, but I was able to get a later fast Greater Anglia service and return on the 17:20 from Shenfield.
No.Do the 315s ever work on a Saturday?
Ok, thank you. Do you know where they are stabled over the weekend please?
They should be stabled where they are left on Friday night and needed on Monday morning - ie one pair at Ilford, one at Aldersbrook and the other at Shenfield. However, engineering possessions or other requirements may lead to a different plan. Looks like there may be two pairs at Aldersbrook (and none at Ilford) this weekend as the usual move from Aldersbrook to Ilford isn't scheduled on Friday. Instead, there are two movements on Monday.Ok, thank you. Do you know where they are stabled over the weekend please?
I can assure you that the last 3 pairs of 315s will continue running peak services between Liverpool Street and Shenfield until more 345s are freed up by the full integration of Elizabeth Line services in the autumn and that despite their age, they are able to keep to 345 timings on the GEML.Good day -
I am visiting London this week and I am hoping to catch a ride on the Class 315s.
Are class 315s still running on the 16:30 from Liverpool Street to Shenfield? Curious if there are any diagrams available showing when class 315s are expected to be running.
Real Time Trains shows the last few weekdays that this service is “pathed as class 345”, which gave me cause for concern.
Forgive my ignorance if it appears that I am not understanding something. Grateful for any assistance that can be provided!
Wonderful, that is excellent news, thank for you the information!I can assure you that the last 3 pairs of 315s will continue running peak services between Liverpool Street and Shenfield until more 345s are freed up by the full integration of Elizabeth Line services in the autumn and that despite their age, they are able to keep to 345 timings on the GEML.
These are exactly the concerns I had on the core section opening day, but I succeeded in making a 315 from Shenfield.
Yes 1630, 1815, 1957, 2142 and 2334 LST-SNF are the booked class 315 runs. They also do the 0751 SNF-LST in the morning.Wonderful, that is excellent news, thank for you the information!
Are there any specific scheduled trips that the 315s are (usually) guaranteed to be assigned to? I recall hearing that the 16:30 from Liverpool Street to Shenfield is worked by a class 315, but I am curious if this is still reliably true and/or if there are other scheduled workings that are usually covered by class 315s.
Thanks!
Have you read the rest of this thread, since I asked all these questions in May? It took me a while to get hold of all the information myself. Nothing has changed since then to alter the 315 workings.Wonderful, that is excellent news, thank for you the information!

Thanks for these timings. Yes there is 1 evening peak diagram which starts from Shenfield at 1538, runs these services from London and also the returns SNF-LST at 1720, 1903, 2048 and 2236. There is also a morning diagram, which I believe is worked by the pair that worked the previous evening’s diagram, the reason for this being that the 3 pairs circulate between the 3 sidings which I believe are Shenfield, Gidea Park and Ilford Depot, with 1 pair on maintenance, although it is more likely for this cycle to vary than it is for the diagrams to see 345 substitutions.Yes 1630, 1815, 1957, 2142 and 2334 LST-SNF are the booked class 315 runs. I stayed in Brentwood for a few nights in February. I had three pairs of 315s so they seem to rotate round as planned. I can confirm that trains in the peak direction were very full. I expect they are worse now. To be honest I don't ever remember the Shenfield trains not being busy. They were already cosy again in summer 2020.Thanks for these timings. How do you plan to return? Please give us an update of how it goes and what you think of the PEPsSeriously, thank you all for your assistance and information. Truly, truly appreciated. Will try for the 16:30 LST-SNF!
Easier, perhaps, but cancelling an evening peak train on a busy commuter line is also non-ideal. I caught the 1630 LST-SNF (315837+315857 as far as I remember, though I shall check my book when I find it (!)) when I was last in London (as a sort of valedictory last trip for the many hours I've spent on them) and it was full enough that it took a long time for me to get from my seat to the door in order to get off at Stratford, and (from what I could tell) the train was full and standing after Stratford. Imagine what would happen if you had to stick them all onto the next service, which would likely be just as full. Bananas it may be, but if it means that a regular service can run, and avoids crush loadings as much as possible, I'm for it.I think it's bananas that they're keeping a sub fleet of old trains for one train per day in each direction. I'd think it'd be easier just to cancel those services if they can't manage to get a 345 on them.
Happy to report that I had two rides on the 315 today! Caught the 16:30 LST-SNF, and then rode the 1720 SNF-LST. Took a ton of video, and will be sure to share the final product here when it is done processing. Thanks all for your insight! How do you plan to return? Good to hear that you caught one. Was the 1720 quieter than the 1630 as predicted?Happy to report that I had two rides on the 315 today! Caught the 16:30 LST-SNF, and then rode the 1720 SNF-LST. I have to say the run from Harold Wood to Brentford was quite something.
In my experience they are very consistent. Every pair gets to exactly 70 mph before braking for Brentwood.Certainly would have been
Think you’ve been a victim of spill chucker.
Its a reasonable climb up Brentwood bank, nothing to todays traction apart from heavy freight, but significant in the past.
