What is the quality of those Poundland sandwiches?

No, still a thimbleful of filling spread over a whole slice of bread. Same with B&M/Heron. In fact it's probably the latter i'm thinking of more.

I just voted for Tesco. It's not often that I buy meal deals these days but having woken up later than expected and being in a bit of a rush, I found that their breakfast triple, along with a reasonably sized bottle of orange juice and packet of crisps was a fairly decent on-the-go breakfast. £3 with Clubcard isn't too bad at all, price-wise.

Boots used to be my favourite, though; when I worked for BT I was just around the corner from a Boots store and they had a spicy chicken sandwich combination that I rather enjoyed. That was some time ago, though.

Got to be Morrisons with their pasta bar - their spicy chicken pasta is amazing, and actually has a kick to it (as opposed to most retailers where ‘medium’ is tasteless to me). Coupled with the little dessert pots as a snack (even though they are very decadent) it’s the best.

Sainsburys comes in a close second, as they have quite a monopoly in the student areas in Leeds. The jackfruit sausage rolls as a snack are gorgeous, but they’re fattening too so definitely just a treat.

That instantly put me off ever buying based on wondering what was done or added.


While away last week I in Lyme Regis I was not tempted by any of the places serving food, not least prices, hence went in to Tesco Express for two meal deals. I got two different subs, a sausage roll, an apple & grape pack & two drinks. They did have triple breakfast and chicken sandwich packs. The snack choice was limited other than crisps, mini cheddars and similar, no yoghurt and fruit or nut packs for example.

Same as any packaged food - packaged "in a protective atmosphere" (usually the pack is full of CO2 instead of air). Nothing untoward.

Agreed about the rise of clubcard pricing being the norm for the majority of promotions in Tesco, good way to push more customers into signing up to Clubcard so they can get that juicy data. Someone in Tesco HQ probably thinks its the way forward (sadly).

The only data they get is what I purchase at their stores. If that means they send me vouchers I'll actually use I've no problem with it.

On the other hand, they have a habit of sending vouchers for products that my local branch doesn't stock. They (or their system) also don't review the data they collect very often- meaning that they keep sending me vouchers for cat food despite me not buying any for the last six months because the cat is sadly no longer around.

In those crazy days at the start of the pandemic, when the shops were stripped bare, and as we went into Lockdown 1 I occasionally bought nappies and baby milk. I did not have a baby but my neighbour did and she was struggling to get hold of what she needed, so I'd buy them for her if they were available when I was shopping. Despite these being occasional purchases, weeks apart, I received offers for baby products for what felt like months afterwards. Clearly they assumed I had a new baby but was buying most of the nappies elsewhere!

My mum had the same with cat food - she once bought a few cans of cat food to feed her neighbour's cat when the neighbour in hospital. This prompted regular offers on cat food and pet insurance.

Back to the subject though - I tend to buy at least one meal deal a week from Sainsburys, and consistently have an offer in the Nectar app for extra points when I buy a particular sandwich. They come in quite useful as they have worked out which are my favourite sandwiches. Combining this offer with the meal deal, including a Costa Coffee which generates a 'bean' in the Costa app provides a good value lunch!

I also get regular offers on tea bags - they must have a webcam in my kitchen as the offer always arrives just as the previous box is running low. In a way it's a bit creepy but I am happy to take the discount or extra points given the way prices are rising.

Decided to hedge my bets and bought one can from Waitrose and one from Sainsburys. Two weeks later I got it on both Nectar prices from Sainsburys and myWaitrose. Ended up buying about 15 cans of the stuff at Sainsburys because it was so cheap!

Sainsbury are apt to send me vouchers in the post, together with a whining letter about not seeing me so much lately, but when I go to use any at the checkout they 'don't recognise' the product, causing frustration both to me and the person behind me in the queue. I have two options, either to accept this and pay full price (done once) or to refuse the product altogether (which I did on two further occasions.) Now I throw them in the recycling as soon as they arrive.

I have never bought a supermarket meal deal. If buying sandwiches, I go somewhere that I can choose the contents, rather than accept what someone else thinks I ought to like. Generally prices are much cheaper, as well. I don't know if they have survived Covid, but, for example, in Wigan or Warrington markets you could get excellent meat + salad barm cakes for less thn £2.50. And I am not allowed to drink the over-sugary fizzy stuff offered with many meal-deals. (Not that I would want to drink Cola anyway - I think it tastes horrible, and could never understand why it is so popular.)
