Supermarket Meal Deals

Greggs sandwiches are better than the supermarket ones and would generally be my first choice. Greggs did recently put up their prices which of course is understandable.

Any £3.50 meal deal is fine by me when I'm out on my travels. It just goes to highlight the extortionate mark-ups on the individual items if they can provide these offers. And how come they can include standard Coke and Pepsi - with sugar tax - in meal deals (not that I'm complaining!)?

In my mind Sainsbury's improved their meal deal offering when the price went up to£3,50. Including a larger selection of mains (including wraps/rolls), and a wider selection of snacks (wasn't the £3 snack option more limited to some crisps and a small selection of fruit pots?)

Although I do like a nice croissant so my view might be biased

I used to favour Boots but tend to go to Tesco these days. Chicken club sandwich is my go to choice, or sometimes the chicken and bacon sub roll (they've definitely got smaller over the last few years), and with the added bonus Tesco include Nice N Spicy Nik Naks as a side

Sainsbury's doing hot food in their meal deals is a strong seller for me. That, and it being by far the nearest shop to work!

I wonder how longer Tesco will do their meal deal for £3, especially after the other supermarkets increased prices. I reckon it will become £3,50 for clubcard holders with no discount for non clubcard holders at some point. As bad as that sounds

Agreed entirely. I didn't know that was a thing when I was in Ireland. Bought a pot of pasta in a meal deal, then had a grumble that my Clubcard didn't work due to it being a UK one. Got back to the station and found no fork included. It wasn't exactly finger food but I had no choice!

I understand why they changed from plastic forks, but I really hate the wooden forks. I find them very unpleasant to eat with, especially if the meal is something 'moist' like pasta with sauce. I keep a metal one in my bag (unless going to an airport where it would get confiscated at security...)

Historically, Sainsbury’s Meal deal was the best in the business; it was £3 for any sandwich (even the Taste the difference ones that were £2.80), plus most drinks, and Crisps. It was reduced in quality in Sept 2016 to get rid of the more expensive sandwiches and almost all drinks were removed.

At the same time, Tesco, who I used to actively avoid, increased the range, adding more drinks and things like duo chocolate bars, whilst keeping the price at £3.

Tesco still the best in my mind, because of the wide range of everything available, still at a low £3 price.

Regarding Tesco, it's always interesting to see that the packet of coconut is included in the meal deal in express stores but not included in the larger stores. Which makes little sense to me (as anything it would have been the other way round, valid in the larger stores but excluded in the Express stores)

Yes I also like the fact that the croissant and various other bits and pieces are now back in the Sainsbury's meal deal. Means that in the morning if you had an early start or checked out of a hotel that either doesn't do breakfast or it's too expensive or you haven't time you can get one of their breakfast type sandwiches, the sausage and egg or the bacon or similar, a croissant and an orange juice meaning that you have effectively had something breakfast like at a good price. You can then buy water or coffee or whatever else on top

A quick-look set of views from me on this interesting topic:

1) I used to love the Sainsburys meal deal as it included bacon sandwiches. I obviously stopped buying those when I went veggie, and being vegan now for almost a year I don't touch Sainsburys' food to go range.

2) Morrisons, once upon a time I loved their chicken, bacon and stuffing sandwiches. Same as Sainsburys, I don't touch their range now as there's just nothing in it I like.

3) Asda's food to go range disappoints me on so many levels I could be here for a very long time discussing my disapproval. Let's just say, my least favourite of the bunch.

4) Boots I never really cared for that much.

5) WHSmith, occasionally I've had good scores there but I just don't bother.

6) Tesco, I do like one of their Plant Chef sandwiches. I think it's a vegan all day breakfast one, something like that name. It's the only one I care for, the other stuff I don't bother with. However, I do like that they sell Gatorade, both the blue and red ones.

7) Anywhere else I've not mentioned is clearly not worth my time. With exception to Co-Op, I used to like their range when I was a meat-eater, but otherwise no thanks.

8) If I'm after some grab and go food, you're more than likely to find me grab some rolls or a mini baton of bread, some vegan-friendly filling (Violife cheese slices are one option, Squeaky Bean Co slices another) and something to accompany it all. Far more filling, far more tasty and while I spend more money that way I do get a proper good feed. Quite, sometimes it's all enough to last for another meal later on, so I can actually spend less than buying two inferior tasting meal deals, save time on going to two shops and be generally happier with my choice.

No one has mentioned Aldi yet I think? No deal as such but the prices aren't bad.
The sandwiches are mostly under £2, the sparkling bottled water is ~25p and a largish fruit salad 99p or so.

Sandwich range is perhaps limited, but they do a BLT and also a chicken thing....


Morrisons cheese and bean wrap is the best right now though...
Morrisons also include a vegetable samosa as a snack item around here which is nice.

Agreed about the rise of clubcard pricing being the norm for the majority of promotions in Tesco, good way to push more customers into signing up to Clubcard so they can get that juicy data. Someone in Tesco HQ probably thinks its the way forward (sadly).

Last year on holiday I bought one most days and later in the day so inevitably available choice more limited. By carefully picking the drink as a vitamin one and yoghurt with fruit, pack of fruit or similar I maximised the value. Purely due to location I bought Morrisons the most. Twice I bought Tesco and each of Sainsburys and ASDA once. ASDA was the worse for choice ( even if all items included were available ) and to me value. Otherwise overall no real preference. Once I looked in Boots but didn't buy.

I'm pretty sure they're not shy about that. I've had a Clubcard for the best part of 20 years, it makes no difference to me. It's a loyalty scheme that works on me, I'll go across town to get my Clubcard points over going to Asda or Morrisons! Similar with Nectar, if the choice is between Sainsburys or Asda, I'll almost always be found in Sainsburys. I've had a Nectar card for probably as long as I've had a Clubcard, it's not as rewarding as it used to be but it's still a valuable thing to have.

From a business point of view, I can't say I'd not want my customers to have the loyalty scheme. It brings people in regularly and builds loyalty to the brand, and in my opinion Tesco do it well. I'm surprised Morrisons didn't try to do similar with their loyalty scheme, which I still say has to be the worst out there!

Supermarket meal deals are typically sub par but i’d definitely say tesco do it best. morrisons is probably the worst for a meal deal, the baguettes are especially bad, although i’ve not had one in ages since i get full breakfasts for half the price of a meal deal in the staff canteen. Greggs or Subway are the better places to go for a lunch or breakfast than any supermarket though

The good thing about Sainsbury's is you can use it with a hot coffee as well, even if it is usually just a Costa. Some Tescos have started this too.

Boots have a few. I've had the chicken triple (& Salad, & Bacon, & Stuffing) and the BLT/Chicken&Salad/Prawn Mayo triple.

Co Op have started doing the same. Meal deal now costs £4, but if you've a co op card, only £3.50.

That is a good point. I absolutely love a Subway mega melt, and a footlong with a drink comes in at less than a fiver. Can't knock that in the slightest, though not something you'd eat every day.

I haven't had one of those, but it sounds like an old me would have had regularly

I think I paid £6.79 (or something like that) some weeks back in Leominster for a footlong TLC sub, and it was really worth the money. It might be more like £6.39, I genuinely can't remember, but it was money well spent.

Back last year I had one some days, chicken with three different additions was one and I think three salad / cheese variants.
Maybe all were Tesco but I thought Morrisions too however non showing on their website. A variation on shrinkflation would be cutting out all the triples ....

Poundland are now doing a meal deal...

Any of their sandwiches from the £1 or £2 range (including the wraps and vegan range)
Any of the 59p or £1 drinks from the fridge
Any packet of Crisps (single), duo chocolate bar or chilled snack (such as Dairylea dunkers, hummus, salad etc)

All for £2.

I had to get lunch from a BP garage yesterday and I would not recommend it.

Nearly a fiver for a sandwich, crisps and a drink. The sandwich bread was dry and it didn't have much filling.

Added to the price of a tank of petrol, I was less than impressed!

Used to have a colleage who travelled quite a distance from home to our office and it became a standing joke he would always turn up with a BP carrier bag with sandwiches, fizzy drinks and snacks. Must have cost a fortune on top of his fuel bill.
