Has ticket acceptance been put in place with LNER to travel to Glasgow via Edinburgh? I'm a bit confused by the wording on journeycheck. My booked service to Glasgow has been cancelled north of Preston.

Not too far from Beattock.

Murthat is the neutral section north of Lockerbie.

A couple of miles South of Beattock.

What a pity they can't divert via Dumfries any more.

Thanks all for the clarifcation. Yes it's a shame they cannot divert via Dumfries anymore - do we know if a train has brought the overheads down?

Avanti West Coast

You may use your ticket on the following operators at no extra cost:

  • CrossCountry between Edinburgh / Glasgow Central and Birmingham New Street
  • LNER between Edinburgh and London Kings Cross
  • Northern between Carlisle and Newcastle
TransPennine Express

Customers are advised to travel via the East Coast using CrossCountry, LNER and Lumo services, travelling in both directions.

To assist with your journey, you may use your ticket at no extra cost on the following services:

  • CrossCountry between Edinburgh and Leeds
  • LNER between Edinburgh and York
  • Lumo between Edinburgh and Newcastle
  • Northern between Carlisle and Newcastle
  • ScotRail between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central

This is the ticket acceptance currently listed on https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_disruptions/300836.aspx

My partner is stuck in this. She's been turned round near Lancaster back to Preston. Any chance of replacement buses to Glasgow? Trying to decide if she should book Flixbus instead which would be far quicker than going via Leeds and Edinburgh.

Quite frustratingly her inbound from Nottingham to crewe was delayed resulting in a missed connection this morning too. Probably wouldn't have been stuck in this otherwise!

On the plus side it means more delay repay. She's taken about £1,000 in delay repay cash in the past 6/7 months due to constant delays. Pretty decent side earner if you don't mind disruption.

Ironically, it used to be the ECML which suffered from OLE issues quite frequently, however, it seems to be the WCML which has been suffering a fair bit now?

Is there a reason they are turning services around at Preston when the issues are far north of Carlisle? They could surely run that far? (Or is it convenience for them at the loss of passenger convenience, as per usual?)

Platform Capacity, I would guess. Only 3 platforms available at Carlisle for Pendolinos, you have more available at Preston.

Carlisle currently only has P4 available, with trains stacked up everywhere

3 platforms at Carlisle is more than enough for 1 or 2 Pendolinos per hour if needed, certainly they seem to manage fine during engineering blockades on the northern quarter of the WCML.

Keep the Via Brum at Preston, send the hourly express up to Carlisle, room for 1 TPE per hour too if needed.

It certainly seems a lot more logical, and it allows for an easier transfer to Newcastle and then LNER up to Edinburgh.

It sounds like this will be down for at least the day, if not longer

Are those 390’s heading back south anytime soon?

They say London Euston on them, but don’t seem to be heading anywhere. Perhaps crews out of place or hours now?

Possibly crewing related? Don't they change at Preston (on Avanti, at least)

You also need drivers, and at some point trains will start running north again. Although a Steam train turning up won't help! Bear in mind you've also got TPE services to/from Manchester Airport to manage.

The Tyne valley route is pretty slow, if you can intercept people further South and get them onto Crosscountry or TPE it'd be better.

Back in BR days it would be a diesel on the front and off via the G&SW - isn't the privatised railway wonderful!

The fact they haven’t arranged ticket acceptance with Scotrail up the GSW seems ridiculous!

But did they though (on an emergency basis not on a planned diversion)
I've no idea if they did it on an emergency basis, but the point was it's not beyond the capability of the privatised railway to do so if it so wished. There's also nothing to suggest BR wouldn't have dropped the practice in exactly the same manner had it survived into the MU era of WCML operations.
I've certainly seen Class 91 sets at York with 67s on the front, although I'm not sure if that was explicitly for an unplanned diversion or just a rescue move.

How long would it take to get a few 221’s up to Preston and then run them up via the GSW? Surely quicker than arranging all this acceptance and buses!

There aren't just a fleet of 221s sitting in a Shed somewhere, with a mess room of drivers all waiting to spring into action. Trying to get the various 221s which might be spread between London, Birmingham, Crewe, Shrewsbury, Glasgow, and enough drivers who know the GSW might well take until tomorrow. You've got to make sure the train and driver have a plan for the rest of the day, not just for one schedule. Glasgow Central isn't a car park, and drivers aren't allowed to sit in the cab indefinitely.

Keeping trains in platforms until a clear alternative is available is the least worst option in situations like this, as at least it allows passengers to get off and make other arrangements. Avanti and TPE stock and Crew controls will be working flat out to get something running, but they don't want to end up with a Glasgow driver stuck in London at the end of their shift requiring 4.5hrs riding passenger back home, delaying their shift tomorrow morning.

Maybe they are turning them round at Preston because it's more convenient for crews (As I presume Polmadie staff usually work north of Preston)

Is this heat related by any chance?

Numerous train loads off Pendos, Voyagers and Novas onto a 2 car (maybe 4?) 156 is going to work swimmingly well. May be part of the reason they haven't done so

The only problem then that there were a number of sections that had been (short-sightedly) reduced to single track. Haven't been back there for yonks now, so don't know how much remains single ? But the trains were diverted back then, got a bit delayed waiting paths, but managed to get through okay eventually.
