ECML disruption Mon 11th July

Does anyone have any idea what's going on with the ECML between Morpeth and Drem. The information on the LNER website hasn't changed for a while and talks about power supply problems and an object on the line. I have family members on the 1030 ex Kings Cross now running 3 hours plus late and the ,1130 which was terminated at Newcastle and now the family member is at a stand at Alnmouth for a couple of hours. I thought the Azuma trains have a diesel backup to deal with this sort of problem.

There's a tree on the overhead wires in the Reston area blocking the Down (northbound) line.

Was waiting for the 1755 from Birmingham International to Edinburgh. It was cancelled from Wolverhampton.

Avanti Staff advising me to wait for the 1855 Glasgow Service and then get a Train to Edinburgh- that was running about an hour late which would have meant missing the last train from Glasgow to Edinburgh.

Joined my original 1755 and got off at Sandwell & Dudley will try again tomorrow.

Would have gone for the Glasgow if it had been on time to make the Edinburgh connection as Delay Repay would have meant a free Journey.

It's been an absolute mess most of the day. Also signalling/points issues at Darlington which was barely mentioned at all by the operators, but that caused everything to come to a stand for about an hour this afternoon.

Then you have the broken down train Grantham-Peterborough, too.

Newcastle Station was fairly subdued when i arrived for the 1626 to York. I was intending to get the 1727 but sensed further trouble to come and hotfooted it just in time. Just as well I did, too.

Resultant cancellations Newcastle-Edinburgh were also causing some pretty extreme congestion at Newcastle so it was taking up to an hour to actually get a platform.

All things considered, I was extremely lucky today. The Chieftain was sat on Platform 2 when i was there three hours ago and so far it's only made it to Berwick.

1S12 1030 Kings X-Edinburgh seems to be in the Grantshouse area at the minute going wrong-line, so at least 5h10m late.

Glad the bits of WCML bypassing Brum have remained relatively unscathed. Sure, we had to swap sets before leaving Euston due to Pendo a/c shenanigans and quite a few ex-ECML refugees joined us at Preston which made things busy..but still we keep moving north.

Yes, I've rebooked on the 1st one going North in the Morning 0624 from SAD to EDB in SP.

Didn't do first as it was about £80 dearer - not worth it with no Lounge access and variable catering onboard.

Will stock up in Tesco tonight for a fraction of the price difference.

It’s the usual- wait for something to happen then deal with it mentality. The networks a mess with vegetation and this sort of thing will continue to happen time and time again.

1W20 1200 KGX-INV only a mere 5h48m late departing EDI still running through by the looks of it though.

Numerous 4+hr late runners as well as dozens of cancellations but yet again the staff just knuckle down and do their best to get passengers to where they want to be. Im sure the OLE team will be on it tonight and get it sorted for tomorrow but the industry needs to examine itself how a tree is left so close to the OLE and the response to dealing with it. Mind you i suspect its in about worst place for distance for response staff to have to travel to get there and by the looks thankfully nothing got tangled up in the wires so presumably a driver on the Up Line called it in.

The overhead power tripped out, so a train on the ‘Up line’ examined and identified the tree in contact with wires.

Quite - is the unit stuck at Inverness then as it managed to get there but won't be coming back, or was there a middle of the night ECS?

There won't have been an ECS as there was a possession of the line over night to remove the tree. They will have just used a unit off Heaton

The cancellation of the southbound Chieftain today will be because of crew rest requirements. I would expect an ECS later today to get the unit and the crew back south.

LNER don’t keep spare units at Heaton during the day so the unit will have come from somewhere else, possibly a northbound service terminated short.

Highly unlikely to be during the night as the crew wouldn’t have had the required rest between booking on again. I suppose LNER could cancel todays northbound Chieften to balance things out.
