That is why "older and wiser heads" in the Conservative Party, in the full knowledge of such a scenario, will ensure a General Election will not be an immediacy.
Bernard Jenkin (certainly a 'wiser head' - on most things anyway), in the Liaison Committee, repeatedly asked Johnson about that. If I recall, the PM eventually came up with there was no need for one because he had a mandate (which I'm not sure is correct as we elect individuals by name and a significant number of these individuals have withdrawn their support). I, for one, would not trust that as his real answer if he thought he could hang on. However, assuming Johnson does actually go and doesn't barricade himself into No 10 with a load of ex Bullers and common sense is restored, the earliest practical election is late September.
I wonder about the benefit of having a stop-gap PM, someone whose time has come and gone, that the Conservatives could agree on, just to stabilise matters while the election of a new leader takes place (no obvious candidate so the process might be protracted), unfortunately Johnson kicked most of them out in 2019. Normally the old leader stays on but this cannot happen and Raab, the obvious alternative, has chosen sides
The minister Suella braverman who has just been on the radio sounds absolutely awful in terms of policies and ideas,...
Boris is awful and self serving etc. But there are certainly more right wing horrible people who could be in charge.
I think that was the idea. Unfortunately, he promoted them and sent many of the decent, measured, level-headed ministers into oblivion.
Zahawi has told Johnson to resign on Twitter.
The 'having a cake and eating it' argument - he's not willing to put his newly acquired job on the line (in case Johnson pulls through)!
