Zahawi has told Johnson to resign on Twitter.

Just as long as the pro-restrictions lot are all barred from running.

Steve Baker seems to be serious about running.

And now Michelle Doneghan has resigned. This is hilarious and embarassing.

Yes, I listened to him, I don't think he expects to get the job but will run for it. I think he's an honourable man (that puts him in a good minority) but someone with whom I fundamentally disagree, and I think the person who will become next Conservative Party leader will be the least objectionable candidate to the majority of MPs, and this probably can't be Steve Baker. Obviously Boris Johnson wasn't such a person, but instead a large number of MPs held their noses knowing that he'd win the election for them, and the enablers of Boris Johnson should not be forgotten nor forgiven during the current mess.

That is why "older and wiser heads" in the Conservative Party, in the full knowledge of such a scenario, will ensure a General Election will not be an immediacy.
Bernard Jenkin (certainly a 'wiser head' - on most things anyway), in the Liaison Committee, repeatedly asked Johnson about that. If I recall, the PM eventually came up with there was no need for one because he had a mandate (which I'm not sure is correct as we elect individuals by name and a significant number of these individuals have withdrawn their support). I, for one, would not trust that as his real answer if he thought he could hang on. However, assuming Johnson does actually go and doesn't barricade himself into No 10 with a load of ex Bullers and common sense is restored, the earliest practical election is late September.

I wonder about the benefit of having a stop-gap PM, someone whose time has come and gone, that the Conservatives could agree on, just to stabilise matters while the election of a new leader takes place (no obvious candidate so the process might be protracted), unfortunately Johnson kicked most of them out in 2019. Normally the old leader stays on but this cannot happen and Raab, the obvious alternative, has chosen sides

The minister Suella braverman who has just been on the radio sounds absolutely awful in terms of policies and ideas,...

Boris is awful and self serving etc. But there are certainly more right wing horrible people who could be in charge.
I think that was the idea. Unfortunately, he promoted them and sent many of the decent, measured, level-headed ministers into oblivion.

The 'having a cake and eating it' argument - he's not willing to put his newly acquired job on the line (in case Johnson pulls through)!

The latest resignation (Michelle Donelan) only got her latest job two days ago ..... 35 hours in post according to Chris Mason at the BBC.

Hopefully a leader of integrity would get rid of him - he's showing Govian, snake-like tendences to make his own way up the greasy pole.

Now assuming Johnson does a "minimum government" thing and he and the Tory right wing rump joins Farage's Reform Party, what would the team be? I'll start with:

PM, Welsh & Scottish Secretaries - Johnson
Deputy PM, Special Responsibility for EU Relations & Climate Change - Farage
Chancellor and Attorney General - Braverman
Home & Foreign Secretary, EU Relations and Northern Ireland - Patel*
Levelling Up, Local Government, Transport, Environment - Baker*

More suggestions welcome!

By my calculation, there is one minister left at Education, the unpaid Baroness Barran,

I don't think there is a cat in hell's chance of Baker serving under Johnson. He has turned him down once, and that was in the days of the sunlit uplands.

You have forgotten Dorries - she could take all of those on, she will know about as much about Local Government, Transport and the Environment as she does about Digital, Culture, Media and Sport.
And Rees-Mogg!

Although Boris has decided to resign, it remains to be seen if his party lets him do so on his terms - he's not going immediately under his terms. His terms involve him staying in post until the autumn party conference, to "leave time" for a replacement to be found etc.

They must tell him, he goes now. There has been too much disruption in the last couple of days, it cannot be extended.

I wonder how many of those MPs who have now sent in letters of resignation, failed to vote no confidence in him a couple of weeks ago. Their failure to see what so many others were screaming at them at the time, suggests that they really do deserve to lose their seats too.

Let him keep the fridge and that's it.

Good of him to finally hit on a position which could have worked yesterday. I can't see how they can do it now - there needs to be a caretaker PM to actually run things, not a childish toddler running round a deserted number 10. Honestly right now I'd say bringing back May for a bit is the most stable thing they could do

Invariably, he will simply be PM in name only because you have to have one. I think that Boris will be told to go as quickly as is possible andthe process of electing a new leader is undertaken asap. EDIT - scrub that @jfollows is correct

Thank god he's going

so Boris is off: but not until the autumn.

Excellent - more scandal and more Tory infighting!

EDIT - cant wait to see how self serving his letter of resignation is. Mini trumpian rantings about a fictional mandate stolen from him?

He just blatently doesn't want to be in post for a shorter time than May.

I love the unintentional irony currently on the BBC Home Page: The headline, 'Johnson to resign as Conservative leader today', and almost immediately underneath that is the link ' Gove sacked for urging PM to resign' ;)

... at a time when we need certainty. The removal truck needs to be drawn up right now!

That wouldn't give us any more certainty - it'd still take a couple of months for the Conservative leadership election to run. (I do agree though that it'd probably be better if he resigned as PM, not just as Tory leader, today).

Serious question, with so many government ministers having resigned, how does the government function until the Conservative party elects a new leader, and hence becomes the new PM?

It’s not like it’s only a small number of ministers that have resigned… And who would want to accept a post under Boris at the moment?

I'd certainly suggest the next PM will be more right wing than Boris. When push came to shove....Boris was a bit of a centrist greeny!

Anthony Seldon is saying the same on the radio at the moment, and George Freeman (who resigned today) is calling for an immediate "caretaker" replacement immediately (https://twitter.com/georgefreemanmp).

Yes. We need Ministers back at their desks. Now PM has finally done the decent thing he needs to hand in the seals of office, apologise to Her Majesty, allow her to appoint a Caretaker under whom Ministers can serve, so the Conservative Party can choose a new leader properly.

A number of us have an obligation to keep this country safe,no matter who is PM. The Party has a mechanism to change leaders and that is the mechanism which I advise colleagues to use. In the meantime, the public would not forgive us if we left these Offices of State empty.

There's still enough scandals left that even his plan to stay till October could fall apart at a moment's notice.

I'm not sure if there's many left in the cabinet that would even get sufficient support in a caretaker role, and I get the feeling even the party don't really know what to do at this stage.
